Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been taking amitriptyline for 12 years and my doctors have never given me so much detail as you have here. Also, they never discussed options for pregnancy, only was told I had to quit three months before any other consideration. I could never quit due to my Post-surgery neuropathic pain. Hi question: since you’ve taken it for 12 years now did it help through the whole 12 years? Asking Bc I’m starting to take it but I’m afraid that one day it’ll stop working & so far it has helped…the idea of returning to the pain one day scares me 😣
@@angelic680 I've been taking it for about 30 years and it still works. I used to drink and that reduced the efficiency of it but since I stopped drinking I have reduced it by 66% and it still does the job.
I take it at night for back pain and getting to sleep, and can drive no problem. I took a higher dose after shingles alongside gabapentin but have slowly reduced dose to now 10mg at night of amytriptaline alongside propanolol. This combination really does help even at low doses with dialing down the brain and gives better sleep which is essential for me as I dont function well without a good nights sleep! Everyone is different and also impact of side effects are different for everyone too. I've learnt so much listening to Dr Andrea, as someone who lives with chronic back pain. Been paying chiropractor this last year which has really helped. Sadly you cant get this on the nhs here in the UK.
I have been in horrendous pain, hip and back for about 2 years. I have been taking Amitriptyline for two months. The difference in pain level is life changing.
Good information about amytriptline drug commonly prescribed in all chronic pain neuropathic pain ..its a eye opener for us about indications sideeffects for this drug ..good one madam
I've not been taken ANY meds for the past 10years, not even paracetamol, bec i had a history of drug allergy, at 67,my tolerance to pain is high, just exercise & eat healthy foods.
I was recently prescribed 25mg amitriptyline for insomnia. It worked inconsistently. At first quite well, but very soon it only made me drowsy but didn't make me sleep any faster or better, and I was drowsy the whole next day! I had no idea it could be useful for chronic pain. I didn't notice any such effect myself but then I didn't use it for very long. Anyway, thanks very much for this most informative video. Well presented!
Thank you for such a succinct summary! I’m taking 50-75mg daily for neuropathy after a spinal cord injury in 2015. It’s been the only drug that calmed the burning in my lower extremities. I have experienced unusual dreams and nightmares occasionally and have seen those documented as rare yet possible side effects. Do you know the incidence of those particular side effects and why amitriptyline causes them? It’s not as alarming as it is fascinating.
It really works well with the pain from nerve damage in my back and neck. I take 20mg at night. Helps my sleep much better than I was due to the nerve pain.
I was prescribed low-dose amitriptyline for shingles. Not convinced how much it helped with pain. But it did absolutely knock me out. As someone who usually wakes around 07:00 each day - even without an alarm most days - it was dreadful waking at 10:00, 11:00 or later and still feeling wiped out all the time. Combined with dry mouth, I couldn't wait to get off it. Now use capsaicin cream 0.075% for postherpetic neuralgia and it actually works.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I have learnt more about my meditations such as amitriptyline & duloxetine from you than I have for years from my doctor!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
My doctor suggested I try this for back pain causing difficulty getting to sleep. This video has helped me decide not to take it. It will fight with other meds I take for blood pressure and I need to be able to drive. In my book physical dependence where you need to be weaned off or stay on 8t forever = addiction. The costs outweigh the benefits for me. Thanks for the info'.
I have weened .myself off these horrible horrible tablets. They made me a zombie , incoherent . Not function dry mouth speech worsened and more. Like you I need to function not be incapacitated. Good luck. Gentle hugs x
Very interesting! I had idiopathic brachioradius pruritus (uncontrollable itchiness) in my forearm. I found a study and my doctor tried it for me. It compounded amitriptyline and ketamine. What was really cool was I used it for a few weeks but the effect was it turned off my itching permanently (or at least it’s been 5yrs)

Excellent information, I tried Amitriptyline for Fibromyalgia and it didn’t work for me, it wasn’t too hard to come off because I didn’t have a large dose but it wasn’t easy either. I agree that it’s not addictive but dependency is definitely a thing you have to get through. It’s the same with most drugs, unless they get taken recreationally which can often cause addiction it’s dependency that’s the issue. I see it as being a misnomer by so many people who think that because you’re finding it difficult to get off these medications call you an addict; it’s often extremely upsetting and frustrating.
Vitamin B12 are key factor for pain receptor.. get a suplemento.. try vitamin K7 .. it will help get magnesium gummies from vitamin shop the make or name : Calm .. try it ..
I took Elavil and my food would get stuck in my throat. I couldn't get it up or throw it up. I tried drinking water and the food wouldn't budge. I could barely breathe. These episodes lasted for several minutes. Talk about fear of DYING, I felt I had minutes to live. Dr. said drink water and suck candy. Finally my doc stopped it. I don't choke anymore. It did help with pain. It almost killed me.
I have been on amitriptline since getting fibromyalgia in my 40’s and I used it for sleep. The fibro went away after 5 years. I kept taking it for sleep. It worked great for my sleep. Lately it has been cancelled due to getting a new med. I want it back as I am up all night and miss my sleep.
@@TimetoShrink I had an amazing experience where I had a church full of witnesses seeing me get healed right in front of everyone. I was at the altar by myself. I should not have said it went away but that I was healed. I can’t explain it I just know it happened. I was crippled to the point of using crutches or a wheelchair. I never took it or take it lightly. Sorry for not being more sensitive. I will tell you the story if you are interested.

Hi there, I have the same issue with constant tension, I am almost 2 weeks into taking amitriptyline, can I ask what dose and how long it took for it to help you?
Thank you Dr. for the information. I was taking amitriptyline for Fibromyalgia, and the worts side effect was constipation. I have a depressive disorder, and amitriptyline helped me with than not with pain. I have tried many medications… right now I’m on Savella. Thanks again and have a good day!❤️

Hi, I would just like to come on here to say that Amitriptyline is the only medication alongside Duloxetine that took away my fibromyalgia pain and has allowed to me come off my sleeping medication (Zolpidem) completely which I was dependant on for over 5 years. I tried using Amitriptyline previously alongside Serdep and Lexamil and with that combination it had no effect. Not every medication will work for everyone but I can feel a big difference when I stop using it and almost feel an immediate flare up. I am currently on 10mg Amitriptyline and 30mg Duloxetine. Please talk to your medical provider about all your options and combinations and I hope you find the relief you are looking for! And thank you Dr Andrea for explaining the medications in so much detail, as a patient it feels so empowering to understand and be educated around what we are using.🌟
Did you gain weight? Doctor is putting me on it today. Cymbalta rx worked for 3 yrs, but quit working. My fibromyalgia has gotten soo much worse. I'm in so much pain!
I have taken 20mg for back pain for 10 weeks. I'm coming off it now though this video does not paint it in a negative light. I just don't think it's healthy to take these things too long. Am hoping the pain does not return!!!
I am 65 and have been on amitriptyline for 35 years for fibromyalgia pain. It has helped me so much but I really wanted to get off. I was on 30 mg and about 6 years ago I weened myself off over a period of 2 month. Once I was 100% off I was pretty determined not to go back on, and literally didn’t sleep for 6 weeks until I finally relented and got back on it. I have severe dry eyes and mouth so would like to try again. But I’m so scared because of what happened last time. I suppose I should do this under doctors careful watch. Was 2 months graduating by 1/2 10mg every 2 weeks too fast in your opinion? Nothing I took over the counter would help me sleep, and I’m talking absolutely zero sleep for 6 weeks. I felt like I was probably going to die if I didn’t get back on it!. I had a pretty busy schedule and don’t know how I did it. I did develop what felt like anxiety attacks which was later diagnosed as mitral valve prolapse. A beta blocker fixed my symptoms. Goodness, our bodies are so fragile!
I can understand. I'm 60 and and an insomnia sufferer for years. Tried everything. Am planning to try acupuncture. I'm on 5 mg ecitalopram( morning) 5 mg. Clonazapam ( for anxiety attacks) Now I restatred 10 mg Amitriptyline for sleep. It helped, earlier and I stopped. I too had the same symptoms, absolutely no sleep. It's been 4 days and and I had a couple of nights good sleep after a long time.😂 Good to meet you.
Waking up in the morning after taking amitriptyline is ... impossible! It's awful... but the sleep it allows is amazing. For me, it was its sleep benefits that finally helped me with my overall pain because I still cannot function normally (think take the bus, stairs, walk to/from, get groceries, carry a child (I chose to have none), do household tasks etc. because these actions cause neck/thoracic pain, as well as pain in the face.
Thank you for the information. I've been taking it for over 30 years. I initially took it for insomnia as I've suffered from that since I was 14. I've had some form of manic depressive condition for as long as I can remember and when I started taking Endep it seemed to flatten it right out. I've also suffered from chronic pain since I fractured my back at 16 and also developed severe sciatica from having one leg shorter than the other. I got up to 150 mg daily, but have since had cortisol shots and began wearing corrective footwear. I now only take 50mg daily to help with sleep and back pain as I have several disks completely gone.
@@achimhardinggood you asked . I was thinking of that too. 30 years of contnuous use of meds requires you to have laboratory tests if the kidneys and livers are affected too
I’m glad it worked for you but it doesn’t do shit for me other than making me furious when I take it and then they give me other antidepressants which are useless. And they are wanting to make me a voodoo doll with shots and epidurals and ablation which I am not doing I’m mad and frustrated as hell. I’m going back to marijuana
Thank you so much for sharing this very useful and helpful information about this drug that I have been using for about two years. I really appreciate all the helpful information 🙏 I have been observing some of the side effects but is not too fearful for me to quit the usage of the drug, reason being that it helps with my pains and its helps me sleep but I felt groggy and left tired at times that I felt like going back to sleep more. So now I have decided to use it earlier than before and I noticed that its now better. I truly appreciated all your posts many thanks.
I just started Amitriptyline recently and am not sure yet if it is helping my pain. One definite benefit is that I am falling asleep quicker and sleeping longer. I’ve had trouble sleeping for years because of pain. I may have fallen asleep but often would wake up within the hour and then have trouble getting back to sleep. I’m on a low dose so will see how it goes but at least know I have the option of increasing it. Thank you so much for this very informative video.

I was on this for several years, for me it's garbage, didn't work at all. Mind you, nothing has worked for me for over 30 years. I don't know how I've made it this far with the nerve pain and losing use of body parts.
Subscribed !! And thank you for a wonderful video you explain this better than my doctor did and now I know more about this medicine as I continue to take it on a daily basis
You know, the specialist didn't even bother to find out whether I had any medical issues before prescribing chronic 50 mg Trepilene, 2 Tramadol and an anti inflammatory for my fibromyalgia insomnia. I stopped the Tramadol, besides giving me horrendous constipation, it didn't do anything for pain, and the antiinflammatory because of possible kidney and liver side effects, say I lived another 30 years. So the Trepilene is only for a sleep aid, I use 75 mg every second day, have to alternate otherwise my body gets used to meds too quickly.
In IBS, is the sharp sore like pains on left side of stomach coming from the brain signals rather than it being actual pain at the site/area itself - which could be owed to anxiety or stress? This confuses some people of it is IBS pain or IBD pain. It’s gut/brain axis?
Hi M.A.H. That is a very good question. A mental health professional would be able to help a person to relax and handle their stress. All pains have a component of stress, so relieving that is very helpful. Please talk to your doctor.
All pain is interpreted in the brain, signaled from the injured site of the body. Pain in the left side of the abdomen is not necessarily a result of anxiety/stress. Possibly, consider researching a bit on pain.
I have recently been diagnosed with IBS and Ive been prescribed mebeverine and amitriptyline 10 mg aswell I have to take the mebeverine 3 times a day I haven't started taking the amitriptyline yet as I'm worried about the side effects and why this was given to me for IBS my doctor wants me to try it but I'm still unsure.
I'm confused, I'm 8 months post op after having bilateral knee joints replaced and my GP put me on them to beat the depression at 5 months. Still battling the depression but the knees are bending well.
I had used Amitriptyline for many years with excellent results for nerve pain, sleeplessness and depression. I had to stop taking it when I discovered it was causing dry mouth to the extent where I lost two teeth. Our saliva contains bacteria to fight tooth decay, however when in an extremely dry environment, this bacteria dies and becomes ineffective in fighting tooth decay. I wondered why the manufacturer did not clearly state this adverse effect and the answer became very clear, who would buy it if it causes the patient to lose teeth? Comes down to money. My dentist prescribed a high fluoride toothpaste to use twice daily even though I stopped taking the drug. Be aware. Tonytee
I had a photosensitive reaction on my face when I was taking it fr my migraine and doing laser hair removal, when I forgot to apply my sunscreen,so make sure anyone who’s on this drug and doing laser of her face, apply sunscreen before going under the sun
I have been taking this medication for more than two years. It doesn’t take my pain away completely but it has help some. The best part has been the sleep I get with it. I have never slept this well before. That alone merits taking the medication. The only draw back is that I think it has dried out the skin around my mouth and I no longer able to use my beloved tretenoin around my chin area. Has anyone experience this?

I’ve been on amitriptyline for almost two years now (10mg) and I have gained over 50lbs since starting the medication. Granted, about 15 of these were recovering lost weight due to the nerve pain in my stomach, but the other 35 I have no explanation for. I am a full time college athlete (15hrs a week) and eat somewhat healthy, although my cravings on Elavil have been bad. Do you think I’ll lose at least some of this weight if I go off this medication? It’s really effecting my self image and mental health.
I gained a solid 25 lbs since I started taking it. It’s been 2 years. My cravings are through the roof. I could eat all day / every minute. I tried getting off it the last 3 days. Shockingly, I lost 2 lbs in these 3 days. Not sure how. Unfortunately, insomnia, anxiety and migraine came back with a bang. I gave in and got back on it again today. Argh. This weigh gain is just terrible.

Medicine has its rightful place in the human condition! Are you advocating cancer sufferers stop life saving drugs! Get real. Our bodies are devolving slowly as we age or become sick. Even in biblical times chemicals for healing available through herbs etc were used.
Thank you for the information! My psychiatrist prescribed me amitriptylin, I've not taken it because of the numerous side effects. How often does it cause sexual disorders?
I have suffered of migraines for 25 years. One day I discovered Amitriptyline and it was wonderful!!! For the first time in years I felt like I could enjoy life. I started with 25mg and had to go up to 50. After five years I noticed that I was starting to get the headaches again and also my colon stopped working. It’s not just that I was constipated, I mean, it was like if it went to sleep. I took two weeks or more without having a bowel movement, I just never felt the urgency to go. The problem got worse and after doing an extensive research, I discovered that it was the Amitriptilyne what was causing the problem. So I stated to cut down on it. after a couple of months, one day I got a horrible panic attack. I ended up in the hospital because I thought I was dying. After that, I kept getting them and with them my migraines came back with revenge!! They became worse than they were before I started amytriptyline. Additionally, I got tinnitus and got severe anxiety. I finally was able to stop Amitriptilyne but I’m miserable with chronic migraines and ended up taking Zoloft for anxiety. Amitriptilyne gave me a relief for about five years, but I’m now worse than before. I’m desperate and feel helpless that any of the drs I have seen haven’t been able to help me find a solution.
Monica, I know how you feel, I have had some of your experiences, including panic attacks and dying (this one I had each night for 2 weeks straight, so after 10 days I got tired of this experience and said, fuck it, I may as well die and stop praying to God to extend my life). Anyway, don’t blame amytripaline yet. You probably also have fibromyalgia, early stages of arthritis , excess weight or some kind of misalignment in your body + age factor. Or perhaps a surgery, including dental or a trauma. What I discovered by daily use of mindfulness/Vipassana body scanning is that the origin of our common suffering is displacement of the facia, or the energy body (which is like an energetic blue print which conditions the fascial structure and the general functioning of all organs; it’s like another layer 2-5 inches on top of your skin. Did you ever notice how our feet and hands get thicker with age? And how everything is hanging down? How people get shorter? How we lose capacity in general? The incontinence, irritated bowel syndrome? Tightness in the navel? Weaker eyesight? Burning feet? Tightness in the chest? Arthritis? All that package ! I am 100% sure that it’s the fascia, which works as a single system no matter what, to ensure integrity and movement of the body (both inner and outer movements), if perturbated for any of the reasons I mentioned here above and others, such as repetitive movements or bad posture, causes all of the above health failures. Look up transegrity, it’s a new concept in human anatomy, a paradigm shifter for modern medicine, which is still not used by most doctors. Energy healing, Chinese medicine, kundalini yoga, Thomas Myers, and fascia in general. Strolling Under the skin video on RU-vid. Try to lay with your feet against the wall, or many stretching tips this wonderful channel . Also here on RU-vid : breath work by Wim Hof, energy healing and kundalini awakening videos by Teal Swan. All of those will be of great benefit! If you decide to take amytriptaline again, consider this: take 10-20 mg 6 hours before your bed time. You will sleep well and have a continuous light support for mood and anxiety. The higher doses may overstimulate your system. Mindfulness body scans will balance the tensions in your body, even the ones you don’t perceive yet. Good luck!

They are used for various conditions and different people. There are patients with neuropathic pain who tolerate amitriptyline very well and get excellent results.
Does not work for pain. All it did for me is cause severe “road rage” when I mentioned this to the doc, he called me a liar and said it was time to up the dose. It caused me to have a road rage episode in his office. That stuff is evil. Stay away from it
I took it for two weeks for tension headaches The treatment period has ended After leaving it for how many days does its side effects last and disappear from the body?
I once took it for 3 months and stopped it cold turkey. I had terrible withdrawal symptoms due to stopping so suddenly, so I wouldn't recommend that, but the withdrawal symptoms lasted only about a week. Around 2-3 weeks I felt mostly like my old self with my symptoms prior to taking Amitriptyline.
What would be great is if the pharmaceutical companies could tweak this drug to make it a little safer on the heart and other side effects. There can be no doubt this drug has been a work horse since the 60s.Any connections with these companies?
Have been taking it for more than 6 months and to be honest after the first weeks it helped me a lot for my depression then it started to be innefective and my doctor increased it but I don't really see any benefits besides no more insomnia. I also suffer from chronic pain and anxiety disorder, which I have been prescribed xanax or (alprosolam) and this is the real deal for me concerning anxiety! Definitely recommand, but amitriptyline works differently for everyone so try it out, it may change your life

how to stop amitriptyline tho? i experience severe orthostatic hypotension lately after using it for 1 year with no side effects at all, most doctors tell me that I can taper the med over a month and quit, but I think that can cause extreme withdrawal symptoms and a slower tapering might be better.
