There's a point where all fighting games should not share the same mechanics and standards and form into one big universal goop. Be it from innovation or lack therof, from limitation and or from legacy choices, all games should present flavours of some sort with several trade offs. All those 3D games you mentioned have a dedicated guard button, meaning you ought to commit to back dash and guard. In Tekken, you have to commit to movement, but backdash guarding is free. Flavours, brother. If we want to talk about outdated mechanics, it can be argued that the entirety of SF special moves input system is outdated.
What do you mean? Tekken is literally executing movement so well because it lets you BOTH jump, crouch and sidestep. In my opinion it's the best controlling 3D fighter
VF let's you do that as well and still retains freestepping. Don't get me wrong, I think Tekken overall is more fun, but 30yrs later the lack of it is starting to feel stale.
@@ComboDamageTVCalling it stale is kind of a reach though, because it's like you're implying it to be something that should be updated regularly. I don't think it ever will change. Like you said, you'd have to change all the moves as well, and at that point, it would just be a whole new game that should probably have a new name and everything. That's not to say I've never been tired of it. Especially reliance on KBD in high level play when it's so hard to get good at. But instead of expecting the fundamental mechanics to change, I just play something else.
Nahhhh, not even. Like mentioned in the video free stepping feels like the natural progression and yet Tekken has stayed on it's 2D plane from day one. It's the only 3D fighter that's been around many iterations and has never felt totally 3D as in full 360 degrees of movement. I'm a big VF, DOA, Tobal and Soul Calibur fan and it pains me greatly that Tekken has always been the more popular game (surviving game now too). I enjoy Tekken and have accepted Tekken is the way it is. It'll never change and no one wants it too, but it's definitely been in need of a revamp for a minute.
Not quite. Remember the sick Dempsey roll? Now everyone in the game can do sth like that when they SSL into SSR instantly because you can do that type of stuff. Nor just have you dodge a linear move because you walked out of it's range just a bit instead of imputing sidestep with no delay. In short, the neutral will changed completely because dodging moves and realigning is much easier.
There were a lot of issues with Tekken 4, but I don't think people hated it because of movement. Maybe infinite wall combos, uneven playing fields, and insane damage output from certain characters, but I've never heard movement as a downside in that game. If anything I award Tekken 4 for really trying to step outside of the infinite arenas and giving us more realistic battle grounds to fight in.
I think at the base level of definition Tekken is a 3D fighter because it has not just an x and y axis, but z. So yeah, no one is saying that Tekken isn't a 3D fighter, but it's the basic form of one.
Why do I feel like I don't remember this. Need to pop it back in the emulator to double check. I thought Tekken 4 was the worst one in the series, lol, but for other reasons.
@@ComboDamageTV Actually movement feels great in 4 but it's just that it's hard to get used to do crouch moves with df/db but I would like it to stay that way Tekken 4 is not the worst , it's just very different and so many people still love it (me too)
i dont think free step would serve any purpose in tekken. being able to diagnolly walk away from the opponent would be pretty busted though imo. since homing is meant to stop sidesteps and backsteps usually escape homing, being able to backstep and sidestep at the same time would be hell. you wouldnt ever be able to catch someone until they reached the corner. i think tekken movement is good as is. sidestepping/sidewalking is prevalent enough that you're going to have a hard time progressing in tekken without mastering it. but its not so powerful that i can use it as a substitute to playing defense. i think thats a pretty good spot. i like movement in games generally but too much movement in tekken would disrupt the gameplay imo.
Not necessarily. Tracking movies as in horizontal moves typically stop any kind of sidestepping/walking in other games. But yes, TOO many things about Tekken would have to change for this to be a consideration.
"Tekken should stop being Tekken and be more like other games that are not Tekken" One of the main reasons for Tekken a overwhelming popularity in the genre is the fact that it is the game between 2D and 3D
tekken is different from the others because of mainly its movement, if it's not unique then you might as well just buy the cheapest fighting game on the market
In my opinion, you're just having a skill issue man, the movement system is clunky but it's solid. all the free moving fighting game is dead beacuse of that, so it's more of what works instead of profit.
@@ComboDamageTV I thought you're having an issue with the movement. they're very responsive and smooth. I can't say the same about the animation though since they cancel out from each other, but the feeling is very good.
@@feerfree8986 Yes. I can move in Tekken. My video is about how it's outdated, not difficult. Pong is easy too but not gamepaly I would recommend in 2024. lol.
After playing Soul Calibur for a few years it was IMPOSSIBLE for me to get into Tekken because of this movement system. Seriously, SC3 came out 20 years ago and it feels much better in terms of gameplay rather than this chunk.
It's not "free" but Reina has a type of 8 way step using one of her kicks. Seeing it in Tekken, I almost shed a tear. It was like a glimpse into how much better movement in the series could be. 😥
