Tekken helped polish the 3D fighting game and raised the bar in how those games told stories. It only seemed natural that an anime would be made at the height the franchise's popularity in the 90s. However, this King of Iron Fist Tournament appears to be a little rusty.

Mike Toole shared an anecdote about how, when he saw Tekken: Blood Vengeance, people were booing it in the theater. When he left, he looked at the guy next to him and said "The 2000s OVA was better." And the guy just nodded.

Tekken Blood Vengeance was so bad, it almost made the live action adaptations look good by comparison.

What I love about this the most is the editing. You don't just show some clips then talk. You let the work speak for itself, then put your smooth voice over it. Did you go to editing or film school? You just understand visual storytelling so well. This is just so wonderfully done and I'm so glad you do it.

Thanks! I'm entirely self-taught when it comes to video editing. Most of what I do came from watching video essayists/reviewers that came before me and seeing how they used visuals to serve their content. But really there's so many styles of editing and presentation, that you just gotta choose which one fits you the most.

Not at the moment. As someone who's juggling both a full time job and this channel, moderating a Discord is a bit untenable at the moment.

That last scene was worth the thumbs up. It really sucks that Tekken has no luck when being adapted into other forms of media. With the Tekken storyline becoming more and more convoluted with established characters put aside for retcons and Akuma, it's just not fun anymore.

To sum it all up: Story in fighting games just don’t matter any more… I wonder if cinematic story mode did any favors to kill it…

Whether it's a bad movie or a TV series or a game, we all have a "guilty pleasure" of sorts. One of mine is this Particular Anime film that came out around the late '90s during my freshmen year. I remember staying up late-night around 5AM to record it on my VCR back when the "Encore Action Channel" showed Anime late night and later getting people into the Tekken game franchise itself by showing this particular Anime movie to them, not realizing the retcons and major changes Harada would later make within its lore a decade or so later... (It also marked the first appearance of the Tekken 7 Boss "Kazumi" despite her image only appearing in a locket.)

Real fast, it's actually David Stokey (Voice of Shishimaru Teno from Black Lion), who voiced Lee. Now, for the most important thing I gotta say, great job on this review on one of my fave movies. Like, sure, don't get me wrong, definitely cheap as hell, as it could've been leagues better. However, I still enjoyed it, from the cheap, yet impressive animation to the dinosaur ripping scene to even the heartwarming moral from Jun Kazama. Still, despite my love for it, I definitely agreed with you on every little problem from this OVA. Had it given more characters some screen time, used better animation and made hard effort fighting scenes, it would be a masterpiece, instead of criminally infamous. Again, great review on this underrated gem, continue to make awesome reviews on forgotten movies/OVA's, whether great or terrible.

I caught the beginning of this movie on tv sometime in the early 2000s on TCM, or maybe AMC. It was sometime between 9-11PM and my mom was pushing me to either go to bed or finish my homework depending on what time it was. Either way, I was struck that it was airing on a channel that showed movies for actual adults. Wild.

I ate this shit up when I was a teenager. I thought it was so bed ass and I was actually impressed by the visuals. But now I see it for what it really is, especially after having seen MUCH better anime. I'm still a Stabbing Westward fan though. I feel like the localization team was really look at Street Fighter 2: The Animated movie and thought they could make lightning strike twice.

This movie is a freaking train wreck. I have a great amount of nostalgia for the movie since I saw it when I was around 8 or so, but good God is it not good. Bad animation, terrible fight scenes, and a bunch of named established characters getting shafted for a detour into Jurassic Park. Also, the movie is needlessly violent and bloody. Like, the anime is bloodier than the Mortal Kombat movies that released around the same time. WTF? And yes the cover art is incredibly questionable. Of all the things to have why does Kazuya have such a derpy smile? Why kid Kazuya looking at himself? And why is Kazuya wearing his pajamas and not his karate gi? You would only have to fix a little in order to make this movie decent at best, or at least in a similar quality to the Street Fighter anime movie.

I´m a BIG FAN of Tekken and is true that the the movie is trash, not too bad, but is weird. Plot of Tekken 1 and 2 are mixed, they do not introduce you the rest of the characters, they make Lee Chaolan as the enemy when he is only the antagonist of Kazuya but having no major impact in the plot of the games... like... Lee is actually very chill, a cool uncle for Jin. As we see in T4 and T6. The Island thing is quite stupid, the animation is very bad, yeah... and the ending is weird, like... Kazuya saves Jun, Heihachi gets away with everything, and they don´t tell you what happens with Kaz 15 years later, like... did he dissappear? did he suddenly die? On the other hand Kazuya NEVER uses his devil powers or transforms, angel doesn't appear either, there's Doujinshis about Tekken with better plots, they should do an entire anime of Tekken with a good script and animation.
@fightingmedialounge519

Lee wasn't exactly on the level in the first two tekken games. Getting to start his own company and not having to compare himself to Kazuya really mellowed him out.

I could see how it could be much better. (Which is an understatement) But compared to other Tekken stuff like say The Live Action Movie, Blood Vengeance, and freaking Tekken 6's Whole Story, I at least give this some interest because it focuses on two of my favorite characters Kazuya and Jun. As much as Kazuya is a bastard, its hard not to see where he is coming from, and seeing Jun trying to appeal to his good side that wasn't as dead as he could have been thanks to the Devil, was a nice thought, and hope for some sort of redemption for the guy who was turning to his own inner demons to survive. I felt Tekken 3 and onward dropped the ball with him and Jun's story. Then it went deeper and deeper and deeper down the crap hole. I rather see this more than the offensive storylines that happens later on. I did like the idea of Jun getting through with Kazuya. Now I don't mean I want him to be like some white knight paragon. He seems more fitting as an Anti-Hero. (More than his son. You think Kazuya was a bastard? Wait till you see how good of a bastard Jin can be in Tekken 6) Also you talked about how poorly treated the characters were in this? You should see how they were treated in Tekken 7's endings. At this point, I keep on complaining about Tekken's story. But even still, we all know there is good stuff in it. It just keeps underwhelmingly bomb the landings. First with this anime, then Tekken 4, Death by Degrees, Tekken 6, Live Movie, Blood Vengeance, Tekken Revolution, Tekken 7, it goes on. Someone get Harada's shit together and make sense with his series. Its hard to enjoy this series when we have to deal with the likes of Lucky Chloe. (Among other personal things)

I never understand these kind of reviews, they just trash something to appear smart. Anyone could take the best anime, movie or whatever and make a 15 mins video of bad critics. It's very easy to find faults on something, but it's much harder and take skills to find the good things.
