Hi Nick, you can certainly spend far less than the systems you'll find here cost and have great sound but then each person has their own idea of what great sound means. Some people are fine with background music from a Bose wave radio and for their needs that's more than enough. Others want more realism. More impact. More detail. So they may not be able to find what they're looking for in the three and four hundred dollar range. Of course, a lot of people's opinions about how much a speaker, amplifier, DAC and so on are worth are changed by listening to them for the first time. Many have never had the chance to experience truly dynamic, detailed and almost real sound. When they finally hear it for themselves they suddenly find that they want some of that for themselves so the old Cerwin-Vegas and Sherwood receiver are no longer satisfactory. But do you have to spend twenty, or fifty, or more than a hundred thousand to have great sound in your home? No way. For under fifteen hundred or so you could buy a pair of fantastic under five hundred dollar bookshelf speakers, a ten inch SVS subwoofer and an FM receiver (because they're cheaper than an integrated amp of the same wattage) and have a killer sound system. It won't quite equal the fifty thousand dollar rigs you might see at an audio showroom but most people would be very satisfied. For five grand you can upgrade to a much better set of bookshelf speakers or a great pair of floor standers, a better (or pair) of subwoofer/s and a top notch sounding integrated amp or lower cost set of separate pre-amp and amplifier. Some would argue beyond five thousand you're looking at a very steep point of diminishing returns curve. I would up that to ten thousand but after that, if you've chosen your gear well, it really is a matter of refinement, not revolution.

Funny how you can set up a recording studio system for a couple of grand but it takes $30K and more, to get it out decently at the other end.

buy regular good quality copper cables... as high-end as cables can be. don't listen to snake oil brands and their supporters.
