Tekton Double Impact vs Tekton Pendragon Tower Speakers comparison review

Great review! I have owned Pendragons for almost 4 years and just got Double Impacts two months ago. They are very different sounding speakers but are both great. They both walk the fine line between being overly detailed and bright, but still warm and musical. And as you said they are very easy to drive with just about any decent amp. But in my system, I found the Double Impacts to be much better in the midrange and treble compared to the Pendragons. It was noticeably apparent when listening to CDs that the midrange and lower treble was more refined than the Pendragons. CDs that sounded harsh and bright, sounded much smoother and clearer with the Double Impacts. Also the bass was better defined and digged a little deeper. But they are both really great speakers. The Pendragons are currently $1800, which I think is the best deal in hifi right now.

Nicely done. Would love it if you would do the Moab, Ulfberht, and would be really cool to compare the tweeter upgrades as well. Eric's low mass array approach may be the most evolutionary development in loudspeaker design in decades, or given the reasonable pricing maybe I should say revolutionary? My spider senses are tingling, like Alexander joins Klipsch and Thiel in the Pantheon of the Greats. Be the first to review them all!

I wonder if the Pendragon would sound different with the tweeter array?

Like watching home runs. - The majestic long distance one into the upper deck. - the hard hit line drive that gets into the seats right now. You both know that they’re outta here. But it’s a different experience.

You know, I keep coming back to this video trying to decide. It would be nice if I could hear both. But from your descriptions and the fact that I am a JBL kinda guy and have a Chinese tube amp, EL34, 50 watts a side. I just can't see how I would prefer the Double Impacts over the Pendragons even if they are more audiophile. And on that note. Among many things I own are the Elac Debut B6.2. Recently I had the chance to pick up the ORIGINAL B6s at a good price so I did. And man, let me tell you there is no comparison! The 6.2 though a more refined and detailed speaker DOES NOT have the slam and excitement of the original. I prefer the original hands down even though its not quite as clean or fast. So I suspect the same would be true with these two. Will pick up the Pendragons eventually, I have the amp and a four tube CD player that would be a good match for them.

Awesome. AWESOME. I'm glad to hear about the differences between the two. Really well described with the rocks comparison. So the Pens are the speaker for me. I'm for a warmer, meatier sound, for sure. You can make it more exciting with an amp, but you can't put meat on the bones as well with an amp, I don't think. Nice to hear that comparison instead of, "The DI's are better than the Pens!" which is most of what I've heard.

Jay, you have to try the Encore, it is significantly better. I had the DI for nearly 3y and Encore for 1y with 9m overlap for daily listening. Encore is bigger than DI but it is manageable. I use furniture slider to dial in the best position. Encore is not as big as the MOAB or Ulfberht.

I own the Pendragon, would the DI be a worthy upgrade, or would I be better served saving up for the Moab?

I have a bit of time has passed since the review, but I’m curious if the Twitter array upgrade on the Pendragon would bring it much closer to the double impact while retaining a somewhat warmer bass sound?

Do you feel the Double Impact would be better than the Pendragons for movie watching? It sounds like the Pendragons might have a natural more realistic sound. But the Double Impacts sound like they might give more detail and presence to voiced lines and sound effects from movies?

Please compare this speaker to Wilson Sasha & Tekton Moab. Thank You. I used to own Watt Puppy 7.0, and the Double Impact sound the same. Please compare the Wilson speakers with the other Tekton speakers since you have access to Wilson Audio Speakers at your work. I know you like the Wilson Audio Speakers, me too but be honest it is out of reach for most of us. I reckon Tekton is a good alternative.

Which one for rock and heavy metal, Pens or DI? Looking to build a new system with an integrated amp, Hegel H190 or Parasound Hint 6, any suggestions on which amp would pair better with the Tektons?

I have the Tekton Enzo 2.7. I agree about the slam you experienced with the DI’s. It must be the arrays.

How do the Pendragons with new 7 tweeter array compare to the 3 tweeter version? The upgrade option uses larger tweeters than the array on the DE. It appears to combine the best of both speakers for about $1K less than DE.

Please review the Tekton Electron SE w/ beryllium tweeter. This seams like the middle of the line but it is also the biggest size that really fits into most folks listening room. I mean really aesthetically. The Double Impact dominates a room. I will mention the Wife factor as well. I suspect it is similar with a faster bottom end to it. It is the same price.

Trying to decide on the Pendragons or the DI. I love rock and 90s alternative, so i love that full meaty sound, but my drums need to be dynamic and have good attack. I done care so much for listening to jazz or piano, they just need to rock but still have detail and sound stage (nothing mushy). I also need something that sounds amazing at low volume. Should i save $700 and get the Pendragons or pony up for the DI in your opinion?

I would sure love to see a comparison of the Double Impact and the Double Impact SE. Anyone listen to both? Is the SE worth the extra $1k?

What would you recommend for pairing the pendragons with, spending the less possible money but still getting enough good sound from them with features like music streamer with an integrated amp. What's your thoughts on the Shanling CD player I saw in the back? I love tubes. Had the Yaqin cd player (sounded great) but long story short, lent it to the wrong kind of friend. I got an Emotiva CD player (which is nice but solid state) when the opportunity came along and I was able to get a Jungson Impression II for a really good deal so grabbed it...have yet to open and listen. I have mixed feelings toward the Chinese stereo industry....most have very solid chassis, and I like the emphasis on tubes, but I've also heard usually it's best to roll out the tubes that come in them for Russian (or even American) tubes as they are superior. I was intrigued by the Shanling, but didn't get it. Anyway, as a broad question, what are your feelings on the Stereo tube equipment that comes out of China? I have heard very mixed reviews.

Good discussion. You have made a really useful contribution when comparing these two. I would welcome your thoughts on how the Electron fits in with these two. I’m not an audiophile nor do I have any aspirations to be but I am a musician for almost fifty years and made high-end saxophone mouthpieces for almost forty years for many famous players so I’m pretty sure my ears are good. I recently received my Double Impacts and set them up yesterday and I’m really disappointed. I’m using a PrimaLuna EVO 300 integrated amp which was four-thousand dollars so I’m pretty certain that it’s the speakers. I really expected there to be more umph, more highs and more lows given the size, weight and tweeter array but no, the sound is not complex and doesn’t excite me. The placement may not be perfect since there’s a shelf behind one of the speakers but otherwise placement is good. I understand that there’s a break in period but these speakers have a very long way to go before I’d find them satisfactory. Now they were only $3,150 but reviewers compared them to speakers costing over ten thousand dollars but I just don’t see it. Could this be me?
