This video chronicles the struggle to eliminate extraneous noise in a near-mint Tel-Ray Super Organ Tone oil-can echo/delay unit, and to restore it to proper operating condition. There are all sorts of grim surprises, wild speculation, and miraculous discoveries along the way, including a gift package
from a viewer, visits from KC & Jack, and a 1932 Ford grille shell that must be "antiqued" to match the car. Let's face it, you'll never see high-class content like this on Netflix :)

Superb educational and entertaining video on many topics! There is a totally unique character to the sound from an analogue unit because of its physical rather than virtual build. I like modeled digital effects but there is still a place for "analogue" sounds , which really are just another physical instrument like a saxophone or a guitar or a violin. The electrostatic delay unit has an added interest because of the mystery surrounding the way it works - comparison with a "bucket-brigade" digital delay unit?!

Finally got around to watching this one... Seeing the 'brushes' inside the can reminds me that I (or preferable somebody much more capable and understanding) need to try and replicate the 'writing' mechanic with those cheapo "tablet/smartphone styluses". If those can be made to function the same way as what's in the tin, then perhaps there can be some kind of DIY version of a proper oilcan delay/organ-tone..!

I just love that “Can Do” attitude (pun intended). Also, the fact that the manufacturer called the device an ”Electronic Sound Chamber” I got a chuckle out of that. Still really an ingenious design for its time. I agree that the run-out is probably a worn bushing on the disc shaft. My thoughts on a fix were to install a small flange type pillow block bearing at the end of the shaft to stop the wobble. I like to use rollerblade wheel bearings for such projects because they are extremely low friction, and many have an extended inner shoulder (used for spacing in the polyurethane wheels) that can be drilled and tapped for an Allen screw to affix it to the shaft. It is too bad that back in the day, C frame shaded pole motors were about the only silent small motor available, or at least the norm for record players, small fans, and clocks. Just think of the cool sounds that you could achieve with a variable speed motor. You have a gift my friend, of being able to take old things and make them look new again and now I see that you are quite adept at taking something new and making it look old. Beautiful work.What more can I say. And by the way Casey looks amazing, it is hard to believe that is the same neglected, starving cat that you rescued just a few months ago.

I know this an old video, and I haven’t watched this yet but you know what would be an awesome modification that would add interesting specific utility to a device like this , if the induction motor was replaced by a DC motor with a pwm speed control, and mount the control on the front plate. As you probably know an induction motor is fixed RPM based on the frequency With the ability to modify the speed live on the motor {and thus the disc} would in effect add greatly to the ability to modify the effect in that unique system, I don’t know if that was done later I didn’t know these existed until I saw your video Awesome.

Uncle Doug I put waay too much thought into this for something I don’t And likely won’t own , but if the 12AX7 filament is series and 12v it could be full bridge rectified for the DC motor voltage, the PWM speed controls generally are controlled by a single Variable Resistance pot The upper speed could simply be limited by V to the motor I.e upper V and motor choice At a low speed I think it would have the type of subtle effect a lot of ‘professional’ musicians would find interesting , make the Var speed a pedal and you’ve invented a whole new effect lol. Thanks for sharing.

After watching you test and rebuild this electromechanical device several times and the overall time and energy spent doing so, keeping in mind the overall weight of the device compared to an IC which could fit on the head of a pin. What I don't understand is how is it possible that in 1969 men walked on the moon. Less than ten years earlier the highest altitude man had ever been was in a balloon. I'm wondering if the ghost heartbeat heard is a result of head misalignment between the record and playback heads in which a residual recording remains outside of the record heads and is picked up by the playback head. I'm also curious as to whether demagnetization of the record disc with a tape head demagnetizer or bulk tape eraser (if it'll fit within the confines of the can or with the disc entirely removed) would eliminate all residual recordings on the disc and the ghost beat entirely.
@sootikins
@sootikins 5 лет назад
It's not a magnetic recording process though. It's an electrostatic process that relies on the oil coating the disk to prevent the recording from dissipating away almost instantaneously. I would think that when the motor is shut off and the oil runs off the disk total erasure would occur.

The old girl is just worn, but sounds pretty darn good considering. Great troubleshooting Mr. Holmes! I do have 2 questions you didn't mention, 1) How does the neoprene write and read? 2) The head perpendicularity with the axis made sense, but I might have missed the diametrical alignment, do the neoprene heads have to be centered in line with one another on the face or is that non-critical? @@ThePreyMantas , actually, back in the 1960s some people thought or were spreading a rumor that if you played I Am The Walrus backwards, you would hear a chant saying "Paul is dead, Paul is dead". There were some turntables back then, such as the original belt drive Acoustic Research turntables, AR for short, that if you spun the platter backwards and then subsequently turned on the power, the platter would indeed run counterclockwise and you could play a record backwards on it. I never tried it myself, and anyway I suspect it might have been rather rough ff on your stylus.... Answers to PM's questions: 1.) The reading and writing is done electrostatically......not magnetically, like most recording devices. 2.) The heads must all contact the same 1/2" ring on the disc, since they are continuously writing and reading.

Oooh, wild speculation one of my favorites, thanks Uncle Doug. For example if you had replaced the dry and worn out bearings in both the motor and countershaft and oiled it (including the wick reservoir) before use, I'd say the movement of the countershaft would be next to nil. I have found that the common sintered brass bushing that these are, seem to like 90w gear oil the best. An ancient window fan of the 100 watt variety helped me in my self education of what works best in those bearings. A daily oiling was required with what ever I had on hand, 3 in 1, motor oil, gun spray, WD-40 - you name it, I tried it and it was a daily ordeal for years on end. I found myself parked at one point inside my house wondering what ELSE I could try since this daily game was getting insanely boring and nothing seemed to really work, let alone work good. I just happened to be looking right at a pennzoil plastic pint jug of rear end lube, out of exasperation I tried it. It was a year later that I need to oil that fan again lasting the rest of that entire summer season and another year later for the third oiling. I now have a needle oiler with 90w ready for any sintered bearing I come across. Since then I have found Super Lube part # 31110 to be a contender for second place, made by Synco Chemical Corp.

About it, the coating, judging by the appearance, I would say it's usual anodization, which forms a thin layer of aluminum oxyde (alumina) over the aluminum disc. I found an old Blackface Princeton Reverb in great condition on Craigslist, one owner, about 15 miles from my house... $500... I called and sent a text and got no reply. The listing disappeared a few days later. I was really bummed out.

It seems the 50s and 60s were a time of great experimentation of any and all things musical, mechanical and electronic! Other items that are included in that realm were the first "beat machines" (drum machines), the electric sitar and the guitar organ. There was also things like the Theremin. There is no limit to what the human brain can think of when selling items to the public. Wonderful things, that are a part of our history, can still be found thanks to people who took incredible care and preservation of these "gems". To possess a guitar amp or effects unit or even a car, that was stored properly and brought to light, is a look back at history. My Dad always hated to try and figure out what year a movie was made by the Roman Numerals in the credits. He could, how ever, get a ball park figure by dating the cars or other time sensitive items in the movie. The Rat Rod mods you have done is a restoration of a Rat Rod, not the original Ford car! Man are you going to have fun driving this beast and turning heads! Thanxz

I give you a lot of credit for a great deal of patience. That is a weird unit. The name, Electronic Sound Chamber, is a bit misleading. It should be Electro-mechanical Sound Chamber. Very unique. It is amazing what was accomplished using mechanical devices. Today it is so easy to produce these interesting effects electronically. I'm surprised any of these survived given the limited information on them and some of the ham handed repairers out there.

Beautiful restoration. Is the brass not also providing the ground contact for the disc ?
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 5 лет назад
Thanks, K. The disc is also grounded by the contact between the axle and the bushings......but the additional ground from the end springs is helpful too.
@KozmykJ
@KozmykJ 5 лет назад
Uncle Doug I had to do some digging to learn how the signal was “stored” on the disc. Electrostatic ! NOW it makes sense … Pre bucket brigade capacitive memory. I'm impressed . The trials and tribulations of maintaining good electrical contact with moving parts have been something I've been dealing with on a couple of my guitars lately. Despite being wired perfectly correctly I've been getting a light crackling noise while tuning. Grounding is solid and the crackle happens both hands on and hands off the rest of the guitar. I figure it must be the dissimilar metals in the tuner mechanism making intermittent contact as the steel worm winds through the brass pinion, micro separated by the lubrication. As they make and break contact there has to be electron flow between them. It's been a puzzle. I've made one attempt to test my theory by adding temporary jumper wires between the peg and the post but that moving contact problem reared it's head. Besides, the wire was copper, the peg is chromed “something” and the same at the post end. For my next try I'd like to find some conductive lube and inject it into the machine head/s. Problem number one - getting hold of a syringe in Britain isn't the easiest thing to manage (unless one registers as a drug addict …) but I'm sure I'll find a way. The noise isn't the worst thing in the world. Way quieter than scratchy pot noise or dodgy earthing. It's just irritating that it's there at all.

Greetings Uncle Doug, I really enjoyed watching the restoration process, the troubleshooting detail was great. The end result also but for that motor frequency specific sound. It was hard to hear though when pointed out it was certainly there. Never having worked on one of these devices my suggestion for the reason of this sound could be way off but something you said about bushings being dry makes me think worn bushings ate the culprit, at least in part. Because of the spring causing loading on the bushings in one direction, and the lack of lubrication in the bushings, I think it is likely that the bushings are worn in an oval shape and this could cause the shaft to shift side to side in the bushings the load from the spring changes. I dunno, but I think even a small shift side to side of the anodized disc might be heard. This would not be the same as a disc mounted rigidly off center because in that case the recorded and read tracks would be concentric to the center of rotation. But if the shaft is moving back and forth in its bushing the recorded track will shift in relation the the read heads. Cheers, Eric

As I understand it, P, the message is stored as static charge on the disc surface. Static can "pass through" insulators......just like it does when you walk on carpet with rubber-soled shoes. You can't build one of these units, however, since the rotating anodized disc is impossible to duplicate (at least for the present).

Hello Uncle Doug! I have a rather unrelated question. I am working in little design of my own, using a single 12ax7. In one of the books I have read, they mention the need of grid stoppers (a small resistor in series with each grid, to stop radio frequency to get into the circuit), the author of the book goes out of his way to emphasize how important they are. In other books I don't see that they are considered that important. I'd like to know your and Jack's opinion regarding this, being the valve gurus you two are. Thanks again. Luis from Chicago
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 5 лет назад
They are not as necessary as they once were, Luis. Back in the 60's there were hugely powerful AM radio stations scattered over the US. Now, they are mostly FM. It would not hurt to include them in your build, however.

What a strange device. I would have thought the heads and disk would be magnetic, but judging by how there's just one cable going into each head I guess it's electrostatic, I am very mystified. I would suppose that the original owner never thought of keeping the unit lubricated, on account of not only the oil being gone but also the bushings being shot in the spindle and also in the motor. Even dry motors don't initially vibrate like that until they have been allowed to chew the bushings. As for why was there lateral play in the bushing, that may be a consequence of having a force in that direction put by the belt as well as the spring that in turn pressed the shaft against one side of the bushing.
