The nicest Tel-Ray Super Organ Tone I have ever seen.....or heard.

This started out as a regular amp-repair video, but when I opened a viewer's gift box, the contents were so impressive (and unusual) that I decided to feature it instead of the amp repair. As you will see, it arrived in urine-soaked disrepair, but rapidly cleaned up to be virtually "show room" new......both in appearance and performance. This is a rare opportunity to both see and hear a pristine version of this rare electromechanical effects device.
If you enjoy videos like this one, please SUBSCRIBE to our channel and consider becoming a Patreon patron at: / uncledougsvintageamps or making a PayPal contribution to: dldcam@aol.com. As mentioned in the video, you can also support our channel by donating vintage gear to be repaired and featured in a video, then sold to viewers.
Please NOTE: I no longer repair oil can devices, simply because of the possible toxicity of the old oil and the inability to obtain replacement parts necessary to restore proper function. Hopefully, my videos will assist you in the repair of your own T-R Oil Can units.

What a nice gesture to send you that! I am often floored by the generosity of viewers on here. It's great to see them supporting you like they so often support me with such contributions. It is much deserved in your case, Doug. I have one of these Tel-Ray cans I'm going to need to service that came stock in a 60s Gibson amp...that's IF I can ever get around to servicing my own stuff again.

I have not gifted anything besides a pocket full of change for a coffee here and there lol But i know you are also deserving of all the gifts you must have gotten over the years, as you are an inspiration when it comes to taking something left for dead and converting them into sweet sounding amps, Because of your examples and experience and the teachings of Doug, I got into buying old radios, reel to reels, intercoms... and made a few sweet looking and sounding amps. God bless both of you and a huge thank you to the both of you for sharing your knowledge and for inspiring. Uncle Doug, here’s my question. As I’ve written in the other post, I own the Gibson amp below. What’s your valued opinion on this tube mod? Thank you 🙏🏻 Gibson “Tweed” GA 19 RVT “I found the tube mod below on a forum.” In the original "Tweed" version, the tube complement called for three 6EU7's, one 7199, two 6V6's and one 5Y3. The unit we are dealing with uses three 6EU7's, one 6C4, two 6V6's and a 5Y3. In the original "Tweed" version, one-half of one of the 6EU7's is not used! That's right, it is a waste of one-half of a 6EU7! Swapping a 6C4 for a 6EU7 eliminates this waste, PLUS, 6C4's are a LOT cheaper and easier to find than 6EU7's these days! Tweed model- According to Gibson's records 204 were sold in 1961, the carcasses were made from Redwood.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 2 года назад
As you may know, your old Uncle hates to waste triodes, so the conversion makes sense to me. What about the 7199? It appears to drive and recover the reverb. You didn't mention it.....but it's an expensive, uncommon tube.
@jamiemorgan4146
@jamiemorgan4146 2 года назад
@@UncleDoug Thank you my Uncle! Had no idea that you could use that tube either. That tube may be expensive, but I feel the benefit would outweigh the cost. As this amp puts out 13 to 15 watts, what do you feel the gain in wattage would be and is there any benefits in sound? Thanks again ...👍🏻 I was just reading about Triodes: Seems that other amp builders/ designers have ignored the extra triode. Do you have any idea, as to why amp designers choose to do this? Found this- What do we do with the extra triode? Fender's decision for the Blues Deville was to leave it unused. For the Hot Rod Deville, on the other hand, Fender opted to insert the extra triode into the signal path for extreme gain.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 2 года назад
@@jamiemorgan4146 Although you and I feel it's wasteful to leave a triode unused, recall that tubes were plentiful and cheap back then....probably 50 cents or less....so it really wasn't a big issue to them. I don't condone adding the unused triode to the circuit for more gain.....generally the results will not be good.

I'm working with his family to do a website on his history, explain how things came about, show some examples of his designs. Glad you could get this one working so well, there was the weird period of the 1990s when no one knew anything about them. Uncle Doug, you COULD opt for keeping the organ unit, and combine its sounds with judicious use of theramin, a good whistler, harmonica if you feel like it, and a rhythm section that could do everything from The Outer Limits, Creature of the Black Lagoon, to Amazon Women on Mars, obviously interspersed with some authentic surf rock. Hey Unkie! Phew!!!! took me a bit to overcome that caffeine espresso hangover from keeping up with all the marvelous comments! Anyways thanks for sharing this grand ol' beautiful looking relic from the past! Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder,,,, well it looks luscious. However, for my preference and tonal pleasure, this device just does not do anything for stimulating any form of euphoric audio response or sensation to my musical spirit. Don't get me wrong,,, I fully appreciate the wonderful condition of this antiquated technology and the purely analog electromechanical novelty of signal manipulation. But it is somewhat obvious to me that there are many reasons that spring reverbs succeeded where as the complications and costs to produce these devices did nothing to return such expense of investment in the form of tone versus effort. But awesome and rich example of the past none the less. The electromechanical forms of echo, delay are indeed a rich exploration! Tape delay and playback is intriguing! I had accidentally experienced this as a kid, messing around and pretending to be a recording artist when I found access to a four track reel to reel! I would think at some point I would have already played around with an Echoplex, but it's just something I have yet to fully experienced or have targeted in my quest for tonal nirvana! I suppose I am now just an old time strictly "plug it straight into the amp" and dime everything kinda guy. That is my type of effects!Anyways,,,, THANK YOU, both,,,, you for sharing and to your very loyal viewer for sharing this device with you and in essence sharing it with all of those in RU-vid land! For further general comment and topicality,,,, I must also mention how awesome it is to come along many of these dust encrusted diamonds, that are not so far into the rough as they may first appear! Ya gotta just love it when you can hit a jackpot by only stripping away several decades worth of dust and/or grime. I just came to the realization that the military and industry of past years used to use creosote when mothballing surplus for extended storage. Coincidentally, tobacco tar and nicotine has many similar properties as creosote! I have just been exchanging the creosote like properties of nicotine (like 57 years worth!) for a little of the elbow grease and I am especially very happy to find myself going back into my own time machine altered reality as I have been unearthing a Blackface,,, just as it must have nearly came off the showroom floor! Gotta love those relics that time has forgotten! Now if I might just get lucky enough to excavate an old Burst!!!! Well, I won't hold my breath waiting on that ol' Lester! But I won't jinx myself either,,, ya never know? I count my blessing everyday for the good fortune I have already experienced! Thanks for everything you share Unkie! Your experiences are rich and you are generous with those fortunes! Love your new workshop pal! I never was a Cat person but I now have my very dog like but independent feline " Rocky Main Coone" . Huh.....didn't realize this before......I thought at 1st when you got your rat rod it was a SBC engine. But it's not a Chevy. Can't be a Yakker (Pontiac) because the headers for them has 1 big tube for the 2 center exhaust ports. Can't be an Olds because of the width. Can't be a Ford engine because the distributor is at the back. And since all GM V8's have the distributor at the back, therefore it must be a Buick. A Buick Nailhead/Fireball/Wildcat to be exact. But which size do you have? 264? 322? 364? 401? 465? And did you get the carbs dialed in and balanced?
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 2 года назад
Good guess, Michael. It's a 401 from a 1963 Buick Wildcat. The previous car did have a SBC.

Hello. I don't see a way to PM You, so I'll just ask here. I bought an Akai 1710W reel to reel with a nice stereo amp in it. It has built in 6x9 speakers, cooling fan, headphone jack, preamp out and back in jacks, mute, aux speaker out jacks etc. I'm wondering if it would make a nice stereo receiver if it had a usb or 1/8" in for my phone or laptop? Or, if converted to a 2 channel guitar amp, if the record function could go to an audio interface? I have four custom built tube amps. Two of them are built from Hammond Organs, and I love the circuits. (Fender Tweed and Vox AC 15 style). If this is a project you would consider, let me know. The amp powers on and seems to function fine, with no hum. I can sends pics.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 2 года назад
I can be reached by PM on my FB page Uncle Doug's Vintage Amps. I don't really have any free time for projects like this, Barry, and to be honest the cost of two-way shipping, labor, and parts would be prohibitive. My suggestion is to do the modifications yourself. It would be a rewarding experience.

Hi Doug, I am having an issue with my Marshall JTM-45 build. The last ECC83 tube is not glowing as the others. I find 6+ vac on all the filiment connections in the pathway except for that last tube which is a ECC83.. I swapped out other ECC 83 to a tube socket with voltage and the tube illuminates. Connection at the pins are solid. Seems like there is a short but Im not seeing it. Anyways if you have voltage along each tube heater connection of 6+ volts would that last connection still read 6+vac or, could it be considerably less due to current at that specific point or is my voltage issue a short? One of those things to take a good long break from and come back fresh, but I thought I would ask the expert, thanks...
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 2 года назад
John, I have had tubes that glowed differently from others, but still worked fine. The fact that a substitute tube glowed normally reinforces this assumption. The voltage at all tube sockets is the same....the circuit doesn't "run low" on current/voltage before reaching the last tube. My question is, how does the amp sound? If you have no audible issues, then I'd ignore the dim tube.

As it was explained to me by a electronics teacher from the vacuum tube days, never add an grounded power cord to vacuum tube piece of electronics. The better choice is a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) which will protect you and the circuitry. A GFCI typically trips at 4 to 6 mA, instead of relying on a typical circuit breaker which does not trip until it exceeds 20 amps. At this point most vacuum tube transformers are leaky from the primary to their case, and it will only get worse. Adding a ground lug exacerbates the situation causing the leakage to steadily increase until the point where the transformer primary shorts out to the chassis. The only real safe fix it to have it re-wound or find a suitable replacement. BTW if you are a repairer of electronics for your business, you can get a CE Distribution account which is the electronics distributor end of Antique Electronics Supply ( tubesandmore ). The adjustments on the back may be to compensate for aging vacuum tubes and/or imperfections in the mechanics from unit to unit during calibration.

Not wanting to rain on your mentor's parade, Don, but since all proper tube amp circuits also have a fuse in the "hot" AC wire, the condition you describe cannot and will not happen. I have had a dealer's account with CED for several years. Thanks for your input.
