I decided to buy a prewired Esquire wiring harness and turn my Tele into an Esquire. The harness is by K.D. Paulus, and positions are as follows:
Position #1 Pickup with no volume or tone, just straight to output
Position #2 Normal Tele with a .047 capacitor
Position #3 Eldred with a .0033uf capacitor
I swapped in a .001and a .015 cap.
Recored with an SM58 minus screen, Boss Katana's power amp, Vox Mystic Edge Preamp, Aion FX Cerulean, and some spring reverb from a Boss RV-6.
Pickup is a Fender V-Mod Alnico 5 magnets.

Hey man, Interesting comparison, thanks for the effort. The stock Eldred was the most pleasant. Straight to output was painful. Shows the electronics, even in the early 50s were thought about and care as taken. They made the right choice. The other cap values weren’t quite right either. On a side note, although this isn’t relevant for an esquire, it is on the subject of caps/electronics. Something I have recently experimented with; installing a cap between the neck pick up and the switch, which acts as a simple HP filter. I have found this a great way of making a neck pick up sit in a band mix, without adjusting amps and pedals (compared to the bridge pick up). The cap value, when you use a resistor in parallel, changes the frequency of the cut, meaning you can keep all the warmth and body, but you can remove only the bass. I mention this, as it was the thunder coming of these neck pup in my tele that led me to an esquire conversion. Cheers again

I appreciate your input, my friend. I like the power of straight to output, and in a band context, I think the force of it will be mitigated. However, I’m thinking of running a wire to the volume so the back position will be standard for an Esquire. Now that I’ve had some time to think on it, I will probably put the Eldred cap back in. My goal is neck-like tone without the “fluffiness” of the neck pickup (especially with drive). The caps used were just what the builder included for my experimentation. I’m sure there is a better value that will get me what I’m after. The question is, why not just find a better neck pickup? And I don’t know the answer. I know I like the clarity of the bridge, but don’t want to fiddle with the tone pot.

For position 3... the .015 is the least nasal haha... great video... right to the point !!

Definitely the . 015 for the win. The only one that didn't sound too harsh. The other 2 positions have enough treble. Position 3 needs to be that warm smooth spot. I'm actually building an esquire eldred model and I'm using the . 015 because of this vid.

Glad I could help. But I returned it to stock tele. I missed having a neck pup.

But listening back 7 months later, I do like the .015 cap best. Also, having it wired in the back position with no controls was way too harsh. On my current setup with the Bootstrap Extra Crispy, I use a no-load tone pot so wide open, I have that Esquire-ish thing. The pickup in this video was a 1st Gen Fender V-mod.

@@jr0706 you oughta check out the Freeway 6 way switch. It takes a bit of wiring, but if it's tonal variations you like, this does it all.

@@iLL_Corvo that sounds cool, but I’m settled on my tones. I was trying to approximate a Tele neck when I did that.

I was wondering if this could be done. But you still get voltage.
