For weeks I have been vacillating whether to buy an Olympus 40-150 2.8 or the Lumix 35-100 2.8 II for my Lumix G9. There are numerous reasons for and against each of these lenses. But the best reason for the Lumix lens so far is probably your very inspiring video. Thanks for that.

Thank you so much for this nice video! It helped me a lot, because for some time I'm thinking about buying this lense for my GX9 and was struggling because it's a lot of money for me but even more because many photographers are so not in favour of a zoom like that for street and as a beginner I'm still not trusting my intuition enough! You demonstrated its qualities and possibilities very nicely and I had them already in my mind exactly as you say (like about pace and intrusion) - so as soon I have the money together I'll get it, can't wait! Great discussion on the 35-100 2.8. I haven't made an investment in the lens but I have had the opportunity to do a little work with it. My applications run towards portrait and landscape. I've found that lens to be extremely versatile. It was informative to see how you've adapted it to your street work. It helps to see an unorthodox perspective applied to a traditional genre of photography. That's whats fun about M/43. It allows the users to push the boundaries of creativity. I enjoyed your use of tonality. Keep shooting.

Yep! I'm sure a Full Frame shooter might see the title for a telephoto lens for street and get all riled up 😂 buuuut when literally every issue holding back those giant zooms for street shooting are fixed on crop sensor camera, hopefully they can see how much fun these cameras and lenses can be 😍😎 I'm actually considering an XPro1 Fuji X camera from years and years ago because it looks like so much fun to use. Sometimes it's just about finding what works for you 🙂 and makes you enjoy the experience of shooting 😎

I’m 90% a video guy with a GH5S. I have the 12-35 mk2. I was leaning heavily to get the 50-200 Leica as my go to telephoto but now I’m thinking the 35-100 will save me some money. I do like the extra range of the Leica though. Great content. This video is the perfect example of the unsung advantages of m4/3. It’s a system that frankly gets shit on all the time. But the proof is in the pudding.

That's very fair! I'd love to give that lens a try 😀 it's a good bit more expensive! I had the 100-400 and it was cool but I just didn't use it enough 🤔 I do miss the zoom! Let me know what you decide to go for 😋 but if you go 35 - 100 it's fantastic 😎

I totally agree. I just went on a trip visiting some places in China and Malaysia and I mostly use a Pentax QS-1 and I love using a 25mm c-mount lens on it, which equals to 115mm full frame equivalent. I often find that just going along, wider angles bring in confusing or simply extraneous information. As you can tell, I'm not much of a typical photographer or are well versed in standard photography but for my travels I've found the focal length great for finding the little scenes all around us.

The 15mm and 35-100 have been rather tempting to me, doubly so given their compact nature alongside the fact they seem like they'd make a good tag-team for some of the photography I enjoy. Would definitely make for a nice and flexible kit that's small, that's for sure!

I got the g85 with a 12-60 kit lens. You’re the first who’s expressed this much love for street photography with a 35-100mm. I never thought of this lens for street. But I’m also looking at the 12-35mm. Anyway thank you for your honesty and commentary. See you soon.

Thanks for the wonderful video. The reasons you mentioned are exactly what's urging me to get this lens - being unobtrusive and still being able to do street photography, which is difficult with APSC/FF systems.

@@CreativeConnor I've been prevented from taking up Street photography because the 24-70f2.8/70-200F4 are too big and conspicuous. APSC equivalents (Fuji) have quite a heft too. Your video answered all my thoughts about whether the M43 size would really make street photography easy. There so much street photography to be done in India but the size/weight of the FF/APSC systems were the biggest deterrents. Thank you once again for bringing out the benefits of the M43 in your video.

Not cheap but, I have the 12-35 mkll for my GH5, so it'll be worth it I feel to - complete the full focal range with consistent glass. Got it new for $689.00 USD excluding tax... Let cha kno bro...!

The talk and the idea behind it are brilliant. Teleys are underrated for street and, just as much, for landscape. Especially in pandemic-world. But the still shots in this clip just don't back up the talk. Cold, remote. Faces in shadow because the faces are downcast. Sniper stuff. Fly-on-the-wall may be a cherished wish. Maybe it's like particle physics; you always influence any scene. And why is interaction and encounter bad? It is honest and it is rich. And it is work.

If you don't need the speed, for half of the size & weight of 35-100mm/f2.8 is the Panasonic 35-100mm/f4.0-5.6. The lens collapses to less than 2 inches in length. It is so compact, I enjoy using it with my GX85 when I travel or for street photography.

I have the G9 with the 12-35 lens and it's phenomenal. I plan to get the 35-100 in the near future, sounds quite versatile. Laughed when you talked about the pixel peepers who whine about everything, I agree - just have some fun with the camera and lenses.

I've owned the Fz2500 Pany 24-480m bridge camera for 3 yrs & really like it's internal zooming structure. Just added the G9 camera & been wanting a constant aperture mid-range internal zoom lens & I think this is it ! Thanks for your video.

I may have to get a 35-100. If I had the budget, I'd get the 12-35 and 35-100, since I have the 100-300, I'd have everything covered WAY out into telephoto range. I totally agree on the dual IS thing, I've taken hand-held shots with my G9 and 100-300 Mega OIS at really slow shutter speeds(at least 1/30th, maybe slower) that were sharp.

It's a really fantastic technology!! I don't know if I could be without it in the future.. my hands are so shaky lol 🙃 the 12-35ii & 35-100ii are absolutely incredible. The prices have come down recently too.. in Ireland at least? Not sure about elsewhere🤔What are you shooting with that big a zoom Brent? Wildlife?

I think the wide-normal perspective is a big part of what I think of as the "street photography aesthetic" - it goes beyond aesthetics into the philosophy of being amidst the action, rather than picking off candid portraits from afar. Maybe harder to pull off that way but maybe that's the point.

I love the girlfriend analogy lol. Mine knows I pixel peep my own pics and insists when I shoot her that I make her skin look better - I tell her I do, but I actually don't ;) like you, I find my girl beautiful as is - great video, I like the idea of this lens myself. I know how important a lens hood is, and the obvious reasons for using them! but I guess if it's a cloudy day, you could get away without using a hood? Then it would be more inconspicuous! Palm House Book Restoration you could get away with it.. I use mine all the time because I have UV lens filters on and sometimes they cast a flare if I don't use the hood 🙂

Just got in to Street Videography. I mostly use 42.5 Nocticron, but sometimes I want just a touch wider and pretty often I want a little more telephoto. I could switch to my Leica 25 and Olympus 75, but it would be nice to have the zoom range to quickly adapt. I am seriously thinking about the new Leica version coming out soon. Thank you again my dear friend. Nevertheless, while the Gh5 and the GX9 have 20.3 MP, my G85 has only 16 and I don’t think it is enough to compete with the 22.3 of the 5DIII. I will make a comparison test and let you know. All the very best.

As a video guy, you might appreciate the motion rendering of a global shutter camera. And in this regard, the m43 system will most likely be one of the first digital video camera system (besides BMPC 4k) to have a true global shutter sensor due to the immense processing power needed. Since the m43 sensor is so much smaller than APSC and FF, it will need less processing power to achieve this. I think it is rather hasty and short sighted that so many people claim the m43 system has no future. (Keep in mind that even top of the line digital cinema cameras lack a true global shutter sensor. That is why big blockbuster Hollywood action sequences are still being shot on film.)

Good video. Good to see you are pushing through your challenges and making great content. I originally subbed from your gx9 review which I had recently bought. Now I just got a gh5 before Christmas and a couple of new lenses, so we have the same cameras which is interesting. Keep up the good work! (do you ever use autofocus on your gh5? it's challenging!)

Hey Randy 😊 Heck yeah I use the autofocus 💪 it's miles better than it was on release. It's not the best in low light and being contrast based you get that pulse on any light that are out of focus so any bokeh in the video can get a bit funky. But I use it on centre focus for vlog scenarios and it's been very reliable. I manual focus when I'm out filming! So I can't comment on just shooting and leaving af on. But when I use it for vlog style or hand it to my girlfriend to hold and film me doing something or talking to camera it's been fantastic. But of course everyone's mileage may vary.. I think I've gotten good and making it work for me and not against me 😂 if you want to film yourself and tracking and keep the background from bobbing around then an phase detect combined with contrast af is the style you need. I heard the new Fuji XT3 is admirable and Sony and Canon have it down. But I'd not swap my dual IS for anything 😂

I don't do much street photography, but like you I mostly ask for permission. However I always think it is strange how miffed some people get even though most folk have no qualms when they want to take a shot with their phone. I am considering an Olympus 75mm 1.8. to go with my Panasonic 25mm. I have several bodies, so I could just have both mounted at the same time. I thought the Olympus might come in handy for videoing owls in low light.

Nicely done video, even if I don't agree on the 35-100 as a lens for street photography. I don't like it's compressed looks when portraying people. I find the pictures always has kind of a voyeuristic touch to them. I like your approach on pixel peeping.

My style of shooting street is completely different shooting with a 50mm 1.8 and getting close and interacting with my subjects but I’ve been wanting to approach this style and recently just bought a prime telephoto 135mm 2.8 Not a pixel peeper btw 😂❤️

Apologies! The standard sensor on most of the new MFT cameras is 20.3 megapixels, the 5Dmkiii is 22.3 megapixels. You will be able to print nearly the exact same sizes as the 5D! Plenty for gallery prints 😎

Great video my friend, thank you. I believe that you make exibitions with your photographs. If I might, I would like to ask you what enlargement size can you reach with MFT, because I only have been using it for video, while I am using FF (Canon 5D MkIII) for photograph, from which I can get decent size prints. I am asking you this because, if I could get close to the 5DIII prints, the weight of my MFT would make me happier during voyages. Thank you very much and best regards.

I'll use it with the GH5 for video! Works great 😃 yeah I noticed a few little break ups like that once it was on RU-vid 😅 not sure what's going on with it but it's not there on the local file on my pc 🤔 YT can be weird 🤷

for some reason pixel peepers are expanding trying to feel superior with a sony camera I'm like dude relax just take photos and enjoy you're work only reason I went m43 is because I got tired of heavy gear on my neck and shoulder and keep my gear minimal as possible good travel camera

great video, nicely polished. I will add just one thing though. This whole "people won't be intimidated by the..." argument. Getting a bit tired of it tbh. I head into London all the time with a 1DX II and a 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 and have I ever seen anyone "intimidated" by my gear? No. Maybe the odd person (1 in 100) might ask to not be in a photo but more often than not my gear is a talking point and people come up to me for a chat! This can then open its own opportunities like collab, insta follows or people posing for me for portrait shots. You'll never get that by holding a micro four thirds to your chest and avoiding eye contact at all costs. My 2c.

Yo buster! What's good? I've never used it but I've seen a chaps Instagram that uses it.. he commented on here a few months back and I had a look and it was nice and sharp with great range 😊 it's not too pricey either is it? What would you be using it for?

Anytime!! if wildlife is a big deal check the 100-300mkii :) bit more expensive but a lot more reach!!

@@CreativeConnor I checked the 100-300 ii to rich for my blood even though not a shed load more than 45-175. It's a case of make the best with what you've got 😉

DOn't you need permission anyway if you target specific person instead of group of people in public anyway to publish their photo anyway? One way picture of group of people in public place, other photo when main subject is a one person in the frame?

If you are in public area, then expect publicity.

@@OchaFauzan01 check laws in specific countries. being in public is one things. being recored (targeted) and your image published in some countries is forbidden. The law around the world isn't always the same as in US.
