The audience does have visual cues that they respond to. On "recorded live in front of a studio audience" shows, the audience is presented with visual cues such as "LAUGH", "CLAP", "SIGH", "GROAN", etc. This is why when the audience bursts out in applause or laughter, the person viewing the show remotely are scratching their heads about what was so funny, insightful or witty about what was said. These are choreographed.
