My mother used to occasionally watch the their programs and say "It must be wonderful to have such faith!" and I'd be like "No, it isn't! They're being manipulated and cheated!" I could never get why she thought it was so wonderful to have blind faith in something, since she wasn't particularly religious and she wasn't even Christian.

@@zarasbazaar One of my relatives contributed to the PTL Club. When the scandals broke (as was she), we asked how she felt about it. She shrugged and said she "gave more money to God" and that if it was misused, that wasn't on her, it was on them, she would be rewarded for her intentions. My mother still to this day donates 10% of her income to her church.... I remember growing up in squalor, with no food in the house...and watching her give the church 10% of our welfare money...sad to say even with all her "faith" she's still basically in the same position...only now living in senior housing on social security-disability... it's quite sad and pathetic what these tax exempt jack-holes do to the minds of those who are impressionable... I've seen them for what and who they truly are... multimillion dollar churches being remodeled, and a pastor living in a mansion driving sports cars, meanwhile a large percentage of their congregation is poor, but if they just believe hard enough, the blessings will trickle right on down!!

My Grandmother was a very devout Catholic. She thought God would cure my stomach problems if she were faithful enough. When I was a kid I hid when I was in pain or feeling sick from her because I didn't want her to feel that she wasn't faithful enough. It made me really sad for both of us. Edit: My Grandmother and my family were not neglectful of my medical needs. I was taken to the doctor several times. No anatomical abnormalities were found and so I was accused of faking for attention. I was eventually diagnosed as an adult with IBS-D and gastroparesis, two conditions that don't cause the organs to look abnormal which is all doctors checked for when I was young. My Grandmother loved me very much and felt the only option she had was to rely on her faith in God to help me. She loved me very much and I have many fond memories of her.

My granny was steeply invested in these guys. Retired crop pickers living in the South, my grandparents were the farthest thing from wealthy, but she gave what she could and rejoiced when she got letters (xerox copied, I noticed) saying they would "pray for her." Grandpa was a no-nonsense guy who was probably atheist but told everyone he was Baptist just to avoid trouble. He thought the whole televangelist thing was dumb, but it made her happy, so he allowed her to send a little every month. (Luckily not 10%, but more like $20.) If it was a placebo that kept her spirits up, which in turn helped her mental health, then he felt it was worth the money. It was really sad.

As a Christian myself, I try to rescue people I know who are trapped in the prosperity gospel movement. It damns you to pride or despair. You're making it rich, then God must love you and keep doing what you're doing, even if what you're doing is evil. Since you're rich, it must mean God approves. Most commonly of all, it damns to despair. I've been to a Benny Hinn service and even met his nephew who escaped that movement. There's a backroom full of desperate mothers clutching their dying children. They're told God will heal their children of they give and have faith, while at the same time, are shuffled to a back room where none of the TV cameras can see them. These poor people who can't think straight because they're so distraught over their loved ones dying are being swindled. Enough can't be said to expose these charlotteans.

A little story about Benny Hinn. I caught him on cable TV about 25 years ago. He was promoting a bible that he apparently annotated and added all sorts of notes to. I don't know how long he had already been doing it, but I watched him for a good 30 minutes telling people that if they didn't have this particular bible, they were in danger of hell fire itself! However, because Benny is such a great guy who just wants everyone to go to heaven, he's gonna send us this bible absolutely free of charge!! A gift for your soul!! (For a donation of $100 or more.) So, basically, he was selling a $10 bible, for $100 and the beauty of it was that because it was a "free gift," no taxes, and no returns. You don't like it? Too bad! It was a gift! Now THAT is a scammer of the highest level. That he is STILL out there is pretty disturbing.

My husband was a missionary. The church we attend observes the law of tithes, but if you are in financial need, you will be cared for. Food, rent, it doesn’t matter, you will get help. My husband would talk to people of other faiths who would get guilt tripped by their pastors for not donating enough. The amount of times he heard, “I can’t afford anything else, I have tithing,” broke his heart. Tithing is to help those in need, it should never be used to enrich oneself. I will happily give to ensure the welfare of others, whether it’s to my church or to other charities to make sure people are okay.

There was this one case in my country where this one b-celeb became a devout christian after a highly publicised drug-fueld episode in a bar, and started proselytizing to random passerbys in the street. She would yell the name of Jesus, talk in tongues and convulse while yelling that Jesus is entering her. After this admittedly fantastic show, she would solicit people for donations for "her church". Now all this was hilarious on it's own, but one time when she started shaking and speaking in tongues during her "shows", someone had called the police and they tried to stop her because she was actively "performing" without a proper licence on the public street(That licence is free, btw. Its sole purpose is to weed out scammers). She tried to protest and said that the money she had collected that day was not from performing, but are donations to her "church"... And collecting donations without a permit is a major financial crime here. So, instead of of getting removed from the street corner for performing without licence, she was arrested for illegal fundraising and served 3 months in jail. Somehow after that, she was not interested in Jesus anymore... 🤣

If you’ve ever seen Benny Hinn, you will have seen him raise his hand toward the crowd and the whole place be filled with people falling over…. Except me… because being mildly autistic has left me not all that suggestible via social cues. So there I am, standing surrounded by thousands of people all laying on the ground… and that’s when I was completely done with trying the Christian thing lol!

Met a nice guy in the waiting area of my local hair salon. I was in a removable foot brace for my foot sprain. Just before he was called to get his hair cut he turned to me and asked if he could pray over my foot. Turns out a few years earlier he had done so over some relatives and literally the next day, the person was no longer in pain. HIs family was so stunned they were financing him and a local preacher to travel the SW doing such prayer healings. So I said sure. No harm. He did so quite sincerely. If he had known I wasn't much of a believer, his prayers might have caused my foot to go up in flames 😈 Needless to say, there was no immediate improvement and though he mentioned I might feel the improvement overnight, I did not. In fact, the healing took as long as the doctor said it might and I still have some residual pain and swelling

The placebo effect is very real, so that nice guy probably did genuinely help people who believed him, even if you didn't. It's when people take it further - when "in addition" becomes "instead of", when "free" becomes "tithe tithe tithe" that it's a scam and hurting people. :(

Honestly, as a religious person myself (not in the "I'm going to force everyone to follow said religion or give all of my money to this sketchy evangelist on the precedent that I'll supposedly get magic power healing" way admittedly, but still), I do regularly offer prayers and positive vibes for others if they're okay with it, even if they aren't religious or of the same religion. I emphasize "if they're okay with it" when I offer because I've had a few people say no (and that's fine), but for the most part it's more or less interpreted as "this friend of mine cares enough about me and my wellbeing that they're offering their care in one of the few ways they can in this circumstance." Likewise I feel the same way and appreciate those who pray for me who may follow a different religion. Dude getting paid to go around and pray for people is a bit on the weird side tbh, but so long as it's family members willingly doing it and he's not going around asking for money for miracle healing or something like that, it's not necessarily the worst of circumstances.

Fun fact, Kenneth Copeland is tiny and there’s no such thing as a surprise candid interview. He’s got more security than the U.S. President. In the clip of the car, he’s standing on the door sill so he can be taller. The lady interviewing him is significantly taller than he is. It’s part of his shtick. His guys carry a variety of stools and steps for him to stand on and he never appears on stage with someone taller than him. When you interview with him, his team tells you up front he may get loud and scary and they offer to put something between him and the interviewer. One week he would be blind, another he'd have Cerebral Palsy, etc. I asked him he ever felt horrible conning people and he said no. He was "Displaying the Power of Christ." I asked about the actual sick and disabled in the audience and they have no access the stage having to walk a route of mazes that eventually led them back to where they started, and by then the altar call to the sick was over. He said in all likelihood, their faith would not be strong enough to be healed on stage. And Hinn wanted them to write in, sending a check, and they would be healed at home. Again-- this guy HONESTLY thought he was doing no wrong. It's insane.

I once went to a Benny Hinn event, held at the Melbourne, Myer Music Bowl in the late 1990s. I did it both, out of curiosity (I am a Mystic and highly spiritual, but also a Rationalist and skeptic), and because I was an avid photographer, and wanted to photograph the event (this is in the days before digital cameras, and I developed my own film). As such, I carried not only a professional camera, with multiple expensive telephoto and other lenses, and probably looked like an investigative reporter. Knowing what to expect, I explicitly refused to take anybody with me, lest they get caught up in the BS. When I got there, I was forbidden, by security from approaching closer than about 100 metres from the stage, because those seats, where reserved for "paying" customers, with tickets. I argued with a couple of them, explaining how Jesus never charged his followers, and actively scolded his disciples, from keeping children away from him, and that I was only here to record the event. But alas, to no avail. Although, as I will explain, I clearly got their attention. I spent the evening and night wandering around observing the rest of the crowd, definitely paying less attention to Benny, and more to the way the crowd responded to his show. With a background in psychology, including hypnosis, it soon became very clear to me that the vast audience (easily many thousands) was almost entirely in a trance state, singing hymns and waving their arms in the air, in a tragic symphony of deceit. The music and other choices for the venue, the meeting's progress and fairly much every psychological trick in the book was clearly being used to put these people into a highly suggestible state. It wasn't that Benny Hinn was particularly Charismatic; he was just using everyone's natural human psychology against his victims. I'd seen many of the same tricks used in my parent's Catholic Charismatic church meetings, as was by this stage, well vaccinated against them. At one point of the night, I turned to look at one of the video cameras, placed high on a scaffold, so that it could pan over the crowd below. However, this one wasn't panning, rather it was pointed straight at me. I don't mean that it was pointed near me, I mean that if that camera had been using its full telescopic potential, it would have been pointed directly at my face and only my face. After a few seconds of staring right back at it, which felt like staring down the barrel of a tank (I'm a former tank soldier as well) the cameraman moved it to point elsewhere. These cameras weren't small. They were the sort that can pick out and focus on an individual from half a KM or more, so if they'd wanted to get a good picture of me, it was trivial, for them to do. Think the sort of cameras used at major sporting events. Later, when I drove home, it seemed that I was being followed. I turned into a dead end street and quickly pulled over, only for the other car to enter about five seconds behind me, and realising his mistake its driver was forced to do a quick U-turn and exit, thereby allowing me to return home unfollowed. I never heard anything from them, so assume that they realised that I wasn't a threat, but the experience was sobering. It never occurred to me that they'd attempt to follow me home. Sure, it could have been a coincidence, but when was the last time that you turned into dead end street, with only five houses in it, at 1am in the morning, to be immediately followed by a suspiciously acting car? Sure, the incident with the venue camera could have also been coincidental, but given my knowledge of photography and the video cameras in use I doubt that it was. Just as I know a tank gun barrel is pointed at my own, so too do you get the same feel, when one of these giant machines is similarly aimed. Its hard to explain, but it is like you can see right down the barrel. To this day, I'm glad that I made such an effort to make sure that nobody else came along with me. If, like Factboy, I wasn't such a damned skeptic, I could very well have fallen down the Hinn rabbit hole along with so many of the other attendees.

@greg.kasarik
@greg.kasarik 6 месяцев назад
@@jameslyddall Actually, the opposite. They aren't intimidating. The people at the actual event were sweet as pie. They car that followed me had, at best my licence plate, so they could have looked it up. If they had the correct people placed in the police, or Car registration department, they could have found my name and address, but what then? But even back then, there were records kept of everyone who accessed those files, so if they tried to find out my details, it would have been flagged as suspicious access. But that is a big "if", for a group based entirely in another country. I worked for the tax department over a decade ago, and if I had tried to look up anyone without a valid reason, I would have been investigated and fired once they found out the truth. And the moment I started working for them, I had to go through a specialist group, just to have my own tax issues sorted.Same with Army Psychology. The moment, I joined the Corps, my records were transferred to Canberra. where they were they could only be accessed by those with the proper clearance. Sure, the people following me could have tried to approach when I pulled over, but that is a risky bet that goes two ways. I'm a veteran and have dealt with these kinds before. More bark and very little bite. If they'd been a local group, not visiting from overseas, I might have been a bit concerned, even then the but there risk to benefit ratio simply wouldn't add up. Cults always try to fly under the radar, so as to not attract unwanted attention, look how, until MAGA Trumpism, sex scandals took down to many US based TV preachers. These guys rely on suckering people in, and know that they only need to get 1%, or even less hooked, and they'll be on a win. Basically, most cults are playing a numbers game, knowing that once someone is hooked they can be milked for all they are worth. Even if you only have 10 people you giving you a 10% tithe, you are earning a full income for doing nothing except talking shit. While groups like scientologists will harass former members, that is mostly to shut them up, not just for its own sake. Even they wouldn't bother a random photographer, especially as doing so could lead to unexpected consequences, both legal and otherwise. Its like the JWs. and similar groups. They manage to keep their membership at the levels they do, simply because of their practice of shunning. They go door to do, and set up stands enough so they can recruit new members, and these days much of their membership is in third world countries, where the money to effort ration isn't anywhere near as good. . It takes 10,000 hours of preaching to gain 1 new member and 40,000 hours of them preaching to just increase their numbers by one, when taking into account that their members keep dying off. Keep up with your studies. These groups are only becoming more prevalent, as our society is becoming more polarised, so new researchers in the field is always going to be our best defence as a society.

Personally, I'm a follower of the Rev. Billy Soul from Del Rio, TX (Cheech and Chong 1970"s). Rev Soul was a radio faith healer who said that to be healed all you had to do "was place your hand on the radio and say, "I believe, Brother Billy, I believe" and you will be healed. Brother Billy never asked for a donation because this was a comic parody of the tell evangelical movement of the 1960's 1970's. As to Oral Roberts, he was a charismatic preacher of the 1970's. He established the Oral Roberts University. When the University ran into money problems, he retreated to his prayer tower and told the world that God would call him on if he did not raise enough money. He raised the money, but the stunt ruined him. The University went bankrupt.

Faith healers are especially despicable, which I can say from experience. My mother used to really believe in that stuff. My brother was born with a major mental disability, and I have had physical health issues all my life. Once, she insist we got this preacher to pray over us. Even as a kid, I knew these folks were greedy charlatans, but knew better than to argue. Let the poor woman have some false hope. While I can't recall the exact words, he basically implied that our illness was punishment for something *she* did... and boy did that get me mad. I am a fairly slow to anger person. I can handle being insulted all day, and will barely care. How the fuck did he think that was okay? Never before or since have a felt mad enough to actually get violent. Probably would've punched him if it would've have upset my mother further. (who was already crying uncontrollably). My brother is so mentally disabled, he had no understanding of what was going on. Managed to wheel myself out of there without making any more of a scene. I can certainly imagine it would be a funny viral video. 'Crippled child punches preacher during sermon' or some such... I still feel mad about, to be honest.

Fully justified to still feel mad. Men who tell women their child's injury/illness/disability is their fault without damn good cause are vile! My grandmother was told her son's schizophrenia was her fault. :( Thank goodness no one else in the family let her believe this!

Simon, can we please get a Brain Blaze style news show from you? Like, set the writers loose from the basement (Sam will unfortunately have to stay behind) and have them collect various news stories from around the world.

As someone who lived in the most Ohioan, Ohio suburb. I grew up living next to an elderly couple, who were just a yuppy happy and Christian. Until their house got foreclosed, and I asked their son who visited them the next day, what happened? He told me, sadly his parents had given almost all of what they had to some tv pastor, and they were living on their social security funds, but it wasn’t enough to keep the house. One year later, there was an ambulance in front of the house, from what I heard the elderly lady woke up and saw her husband deceased. I asked the son again what really happened, and he said his father would drink a case of beer every night while watching these pastors all night. While he wasn’t allowed to drink at all, since he had health issues. Therefore, he drank himself to death in the name of Jesus.

Kenneth Copeland, according to Wikipedia, is worth $770 million (at least in 2022). Pat Robertsons net worth is 100 million, Joel Olsteen, who Simon didn’t talk about, has a net worth of over 50 million and his church takes in an average of 43 million a year and he also has his book sales. I bet most of the people that donate to these idiots make less than 50k a year.

Yep. I grew up in an evangelical family, my dad did construction and was a part time pastor. This was Book of Acts style with exorcisms, speaking in tongues, preaching on the streets and laying on hands for healing. I believed it, was indoctrinated 100%. Kenneth Copland, the Bakers, Pat Roberson and kids Christian programs was on the tv and we were not allowed to listen to music that wasn’t Christian based. We went to church multiple times per week and my parents spent all their spare income on evangelizing and helping church efforts. When I realized it wasn’t true was when nothing that was prophesied over me turned out like the prophecies. I also noticed people were never actually healed. They would go up for prayer and the pastor would claim 100% healing. The next week they would be back and un healed. They would pray for more faith so they can be healed. A lot of them died and it was “Gods way of healing them because now they have a new body in heaven.” I noticed that faith didn’t work the way the Bible says and the biblical science is what people thought about the earth and stars at that time before we knew it wasn’t flat, with a glass dome with widows to let in the rai. They thought Space was water because rain comes out of the sky, on pillars and the earth is billions of years old. I read that as an adult and just couldn’t get my brain to accept it anymore. If you think about the atonement side of it we’re talking crazy talk. Blood magic rituals with an Uno Reverse where God sacrifices his son to us. Where before (Judaism) it was always us sacrificing to God. I just don’t believe great grandma eating an apple makes me guilty of anything because I’m related to her. Generational guilt is a crazy idea. So is eternal torture for not believing the story. The sole criteria for salvation is gullibility. Doesn’t matter how bad you have been, if you just believe (in Jesus) you will be saved. Doesn’t matter how good you are either. If you don’t believe you’re an unbeliever who’s going to be tortured for eternity for unbelief. I say if any person is asking for 10% of your paycheck and promising a reward after death. Is probably a scam. You should be extremely skeptical.

Yeah but that was Fred Phelps who said that. His cult literally almost hate everything, so it's a VERY low-hanging fruit. If he said God loves Australia, then I'd be really concerned.

Okay okay. I’m visually impaired as well, and have had similar experiences as Dave with people saying if I dedicate myself to god, my blindness will be cured. Also, in some countries, some people see blindness as a gift from god to be honored. I stopped trying to understand a very long time ago. 😂
