TV in the US and the UK is so different! But what exactly makes British TV so British, and what makes American TV so American? Let's dive in and chat specifics!
Jay Foreman: / jayforeman51
Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed it!
If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)

There is one thing that's not quite right. The TV licence actually is for TV. You can legally access BBC radio and the website without a TV licence. You need a TV licence for the TV and iPlayer. Obviously the TV licence funds both but what you're actually paying for the right to use is the TV and iPlayer

You should see drug ads in US magazines. I work for a heath magazine and since it's required by law to include all the side effects and everything, drug ads are typically 2-4 pages! And the drug company has to pay for those extra pages, they don't get a flat rate like your actual ad is one page but since you have to have 3 pages of fine print we'll just throw that in. Nope gotta pay for your pages of fine print which easily will be five figures. Says a lot about drug companies in the US...

I don't think it's been mentioned, but when US cartoons were shown in the UK on channels like boomerang and cartoon network, they stuck to UK ad breaks and that meant there were parts where an ad break was obviously meant to go like a cliffhanger moment which would go to black and then the scene would continue slightly after without an ad break. I remember it most on Scooby Doo.

I disagree. I just think Americans like to either have a lighthearted show to distract from the real world or hear jokes about what is happening in the US no one really noticed but once pointed out it’s funny. Americans want to laugh out of happiness not because someone got hurt. Like the turtle not being killed on the American comedy makes sense because Americans don’t want to see a dead turtle.
@gracearias798
@gracearias798 4 года назад
Faith with the dead turtle he was pointing out that American comedy too is censored, and due to it being so censored can ruin jokes. I would count modern family as a light humored show, and I just watched an episode where Jay had just killed a turtle. Obviously in a cruel way people don’t want to watch turtles being killed, but in comedy especially in the UK anything goes , and done right it can be hilarious. UK humor in my opinion because it doesn’t have to be as censored is better. British humor is sarcastic humor that I can relate to more. I find it more enjoyable and laugh way more watching a British Panel show or Graham Norton than I do watching SNL.

I've watched this video a few times recently and I've finally worked out why it appeals to me so much. It is so refreshing to see someone passionately talk about how remarkable the BBC is. Yes it has its issues but it really is an incredible institution. I honestly believe it's as important as the NHS
@scottsutherland9004
@scottsutherland9004 4 года назад
@@sirwizalot7164 Hi! I'd love an example of this propaganda? I'm very open minded and can change my mind if presented with strong enough evidence. A call of propaganda has to be pretty strongly backed up, I'd need a very strong set of examples to go with you on this but open to it. From what I can tell all sides of the political divide tend to not be keen on the BBC, which to me is a strong indication that it's doing something right. It has its problems, not exactly delighted about the coverage it gives to the likes of Steve Bannon or Tommy Robinson but most institutions have their issues. It doesn't mean we should dismantle the whole thing.

@MichaelKingsfordGray Hi there! Sadly not a BBC employee, although I'd love the wages. Also thankfully no mental health issues. I do know several people who do have their problems though and it really does upset me seeing what they're going through. To equate my very mild defence of the BBC with such issues seems a bit below the belt. Not to me, I can take it, but trivialising mental illness is something I personally don't engage in. Each to their own of course, your right to free speech is incredibly important. Luckily we have an institution such as the BBC through which we can express these views.
@scottsutherland9004
@scottsutherland9004 4 года назад
@MichaelKingsfordGray I've no idea what your views are other than you don't like the BBC so going to have to base it on that. Have you ever listened to Feedback on Radio 4 on a Friday afternoon? Some of the strongest criticism of the BBC you're ever likely to hear right there on the BBC. The BBC news channel is consistently runs segments on problems with the corporation. I agree it has its issues, as do all major institutions, but the concept and I believe intent of the BBC and the vast majority of its employees like positive. Criticisms can only help them improve

@MichaelKingsfordGray To your way of thinking. Is that not the whole point of debate and discussion? I'm trying to understand where you're coming from but it is difficult as you don't share much. If you don't want to then no problem, that's your right but if so there's no point continuing with this discussion. Regardless, an interesting exchange which for the most part was fairly civil.
