Telling Someone to "Make Sure" Something Happens

that makes two of us. He explain things in a way that I can wrap my head around. My Mother is Hispanic and I grew up in Texas but I never could get over the hump to being fluent in Spanish. Now I work somewhere where speaking Spanish would be very useful so I'm trying to become fluent.

I believe you are correct. I learned in my recent college Spanish 3 when action in the main clause will happen in the future or is a command, the subjunctive is used.

Hi Raymond, No, you can't use it the way you proposed. Asegurar has different meanings when it is not pronominal. As far as being relfexive, I suppose it could be if you thought of it as "to assure oneself". Personally, I view them all as pronominal so it never really matters to me if one is technically reflexive or not. To use this expression, you will have to keep it as asegúrate -- because you are telling them to make sure that something happens. Other options are to say, "Tell Juan to take the garbage out before returning home." Dile a Juan que saque la basura antes de regresar a casa (or volver a casa). The reason why it wouldn't be antes de que is because there is no subject change in the second part. Juan is the person taking out the garbage and returning home.

Your message peaked my curiosity and I started looking for the word on Salvadorian sites. I found it either written with an accent on the u or no accent at all. There are some countries where they say asegurAte with the accent on the penultimate syllable. And they even place an accent mark on that á (but they shouldn't 'cause that's wrong). Argentina is one of those countries. In Argentina they also say: Dejáte de decir pavadas (tonterías). And that means: Stop talking nonsense. But the correct way is: Deja de decir...

I can see why they wouldn't want to correct you. I don't have a specific location you can turn to in order to learn everything you need. Using an AI to chat with can help. I have a video talking about that and I am currently testing a Spanish chat AI program. If I like it, I will do a video on it.

I typically sleep well for about 5 hours and then I wake up and can't go back to sleep.

@@QrooSpanish oh i wish i could do that Paul. I go to bed at say 11 PM and am awake by midnight . From then on i only sleep for maybe 25 minutes at a stretch ,wake for the rest of that hour..and on like that until 3 to 4 AM when i get up. I do that no matter how tired I am or what I try. I am almost 60 now so i guess this is it for me 😴😵‍💫

​@@leederbyshire6158 you probably tried much of thesse regardless i hope you fix it, avoid caffeine alcohol, get regular exercise, sleeping schedule ritual before sleeping, avoid naps during day, get out of bed when you cant sleep and do something calming for 20min or so. If these dont help please talk with a doctor. It isnt healthy and it has a big impact on your life.

Ha! I get it. Not sure I was clear. I'm still translating in my head so when I want to say something... I'm still fuzzy about whether or not it needs to be subjunctive when I go to Spanish. You've helped me immensely on recognizing the Spanish triggers. Still not clear about knowing when Subjunctive is called for when I'm forming the sentence in my head. I'm going back through the whole Subjunctive playlist again ... maybe it will all sort itself out. You are truly the best teacher I've found ... and I've been through a LOT of them. I think I could use one whole video on just when subjunctive is called for. I've got the conjugation and the triggers but not the when to use it. You don't need to respond (you must get way too many emails) ... just a thought on this issue. I'll keep plugging away ... you've convinced me this is critical when I thought it was something that would come later. ;-) @@QrooSpanish

You don't use articles when you say proper nouns (names, towns, countries). For example you don't say Me gusta el México or Me gusta el Pedro. But there are other situations where you don't use the articles like when you say I never drink coffee, you say Nunca bebo café instead of Nunca bebo el café

You can get around using it in most cases by phrasing it differently using the indicative. The exception might be common commands like "mira" and "venga".
