Mandarin Impossible i wil highly appreciate it. i have a question, in greetings you said morning is zao shang. with third tone in z(a)o in another place they say morning is shang wu (with forth tone in sh(a)ng and 3rd tone in w(u) are they both correct? 2.Another question is the pronounciation of Xi. others are pronouncing as si and others as shi. Are both correct?
@MandarinImpossible
@MandarinImpossible 7 лет назад
For question 1: Both of them are correct and both indicate the time zone "morning" . 早上 ( zǎoshàng / zǎoshang ) means morning. It's literal meaning is "early aspect". 上午 ( Shàngwǔ ) means morning. It's literal means is "before noon". I will explain them in the part2 of 12 hour clock lesson, too. For question2: The pronunciation of "Xi" can't be pronounced as "si" or "shi".

Some people are from the region of North or South of China will have different pronunciation. Mandarin Chinese are also widely used in the other countries such as Malaysia and Singpore. People also have different pronunciation for the same Mandarin Chinese characters. To say it simple, the background of the speaker and the region that the speaker is from will both have effect on how they talk and pronounce. I suggest you, especially a beginner, listen to and learn from Mandarin Chinese teacher's demonstration for the pronunciation. For pronuncing Hanyu Pinyin "X": The tips are : keep tongue flat inside your mouth keep upper and lower front teeth touching together gently When the consonant X is combine with the other vowels such as the phrases "xiàwǔ", "xiànzài", "xiǎoshí", "xīngqī", some people pronounce the pinyin "x" sound into the sound like pronouncing the English letter C. ( ABCDEFG.......) In my opinion, it is not good enough. Remember, when pronouncing the pinyin "x" in a combination such as "xian", do not make your upper and lower front teeth touching together for too long time. Also, when pronouncing the "X" in "xiàwǔ", "xiànzài", "xiǎoshí", "xīngqī", try to keep your lips wide just like in a smile position ( just looks like you are smiling). The above tips will make your pronouncing more like the proper pinyin "x". Don't worry too much about how the other people's pronunciation. Once your pronunciation is correct, then it is fine.

Next question: Sometimes when reading Mandarin words in pinyin, the letter "r" sounds like a soft "j" and other times I hear it pronounced almost like an English "r." All of the grammar rules tools I use say to pronounce "r" like the "g" in "mirage," but when I listen to different Chinese apps, watch different Chinese videos, listen to Chinese audio files, sometimes this isn't so. Why is this, and under what circumstances does this change?
@MandarinImpossible
@MandarinImpossible 6 лет назад
Hi! Sorry for the late reply. I am just back from my Chinese New Year holidays. :-) From your question, here is my opinion and suggestion for you. Pinyin "r" is NOT TOTALLY like the English "r" in the word like "rain", "run". The tongue position of the English "r" in "rain" before you really pronounce it is similar to the tongue position of pinyin "r". When you pronounce pinyin "r", you need to pay attention to that : 1. the position your tongue is in the Middle of your upper jaw 2. the tip of your tongue is in lifted position near the middle of your upper jaw instead of touching your upper or lower front teeth. The pronunciation of the pinyin consonant "r" will not be changed when it is pronounced by itself or with the other pinyin vowels. I hope my answer may help you.

您好教师 ! I have a question to ask. Hmm.... Can you please tell me, is Chinese name goes like Family name + first name (as Chen LiNong) or goes like First name + Family name (as LiNong Chen)?? Which one is right exactly?? I'm so confused about this. Hope you would reply me back. Anyway, thanks for all the best lessons 💕💞 ~ a Big Love From Cambodia (柬埔寨)

I have another question, regarding rén. Sometimes I see the character 人 like you showed, and sometimes I see it written as 亻. What is the difference between these two characters, when both of them are called "ren" with the second tone and both seemingly mean "person," from what I've studied. Is it that 亻is a radical and only used when in conjunction with other characters? Like for example, when writing "rest" you use 休?
@MandarinImpossible
@MandarinImpossible 6 лет назад
You are right. 亻is a radical. Each character has one or more than one component which may have its own function and meaning to form the meaning of the character. Every Chinese character has ONLY ONE radical that is chosen from one of the components in the character. Let's take the character "休" as the example: The components of the character "休" are "亻" and "木". The radical of "休" is "亻". For the meaning of "休" can be explained like this: The component "亻" means "person" and "木" means "wood or tree". A person lie down or sit down next to the tree forms the meaning of the character "休" as"rest". 休 = 亻 + 木 Rest = People + Tree I hope this explanation is clear for you. If you still don't understand about this, just feel free to ask me again. :-) .

Can you please explain to me the difference between jiārén and jiātíng? Some of my sources say jiārén means family and some say jiātíng does. Then some sources say that jiārén means "beautiful woman," but everywhere I look up jiātíng it says it means family.
@MandarinImpossible
@MandarinImpossible 6 лет назад
I explain it with the characters for you and that will be more clear. The literal meaning of "家人" (jiārén) is "household" "person". It means the people in your family like sister, father, daughter...etc. The literal meaning of "家庭" (jiātíng) is "household" "yard". It means a living unit that many family members live together. The literal meaning of "佳人" (jiārén) is "good or beautiful" "person". It often means pretty woman or good person or people with talent. One pronunciation may correspond to more than one Mandarin Chinese characters. That's why you felt confused about the meaning of them. I hope my explanation helps you. :-)
@TheEarthCreature
@TheEarthCreature 6 лет назад
Thank you very much. It did help me a lot, and it makes sense since I've recently started learning the actual mandarin characters and how the words are actually pieced together to form their meanings. I suppose it's no different than English, where we have our synonyms, homonyms and homophones but when learning it in a new language it is momentarily confusing. Very much appreciated.

How to write 00:00:01 零 点 零 一 秒 Ling dian ling yi miao? Right? Thanks
@MandarinImpossible
@MandarinImpossible 6 лет назад
你好, Yung YUNG! It is correct! You can say and write 00:00:01 as " 零点零一秒 ( líng diǎn líng yī miǎo) ". However, for saying and writing the time 00:00:01, I would say and write it as " 零点零ㄧ分零一秒 ( líng diǎn língyī fēn líng yī miǎo) ". I say it with the part "零ㄧ分 língyī fēn" because I feel it will be more precise when synchronizing the time with the others.

Mandarin Impossible 00:00:01cause rarely used.? 零点 零一分 零一秒 - - > 00:01:01? Thank you!^^ Im really waiting your new lesson video. ^, ~
@MandarinImpossible
@MandarinImpossible 6 лет назад
Sorry I wrote it wrong. It should be " for saying and writing the time 00:00:01, I would say and write it as " 零点零分零一秒 ( líng diǎn líng fēn líng yī miǎo) ". For saying 00:00:01 in Mandarin Chinese, Chinese rarely use it. Because for the daily using, it has no need to be so precise for the part of "second". That's why I only gave you only one example for the part of second in the video. :-) Thanks for your patience for the coming lessons. Next one will be "Family members". :-)
