1:47 That's it. In less than 10 seconds counting minutes was explained to me. I took a school district Japanese class for two years. The course never explained this. Thank you for this ! I am still confused in understanding when to use pun or fun for the minutes especially when it’s between 11-60
@MuttFitness
@MuttFitness 4 года назад
The number in the ten's place doesn't change the -fun versus -pun. Only the last number you say matters. It's like "a" versus "an" in english where the only thing that matters is the starting sound. Except in Japanese it's the ending sound that matters.
@marioman756
@marioman756 12 лет назад
@k45g Because you do. Though it's actually not an "L" sound exactly, it's more like a cross between an L and a D. Sometimes it sounds like straight up L though. I think why someone chose to represent it with "R" might be that it sounds very similar to a rolled "R", just that it only bounces off your tongue one time. (I say that, however, ROUGH sounding japanese rolls "R"s like crazy)
@JapanSocietyNYC
@JapanSocietyNYC 11 лет назад
Are you asking about 51 seconds? Then it would be gojyuu-ichi byou (ごじゅういちびょう). However, if you are asking about 12:51, it would be jyuuni-ji gojyuu-ippun (じゅうにじごじゅういっぷん).

If a Japanese person were to WRITE out the time, would they write it 2:15 or ニ:十ご or would they spell it out completely with all the Kanji characters for "-ji" and "-pun"?? The Kanji for hour "ji" seems really complicated, and the Kanji for minute "pun" is simple :P I would be tempted to use Hiragana, instead of the complex Kanji when writing time, if that's the case :P

Can 7 PM be used as nana-ji?
@learningkanji3930
@learningkanji3930 8 лет назад
Usually 7PM is (gogo) shichi-ji, but very exceptionally (gogo)nana-ji can be used (especially when not just 7 o'clock but eg, 7:36(nana-ji sanjuu-roppun)). Nana-ji is mainly used to make clear that it is 7(because sound nana is not as confusing as shichi(because shichi-ji could be heard to be confusing as ichi-ji(1ji)).

Whether they use 24 hour time or not, isn't relevant. He means that you probably shouldn't need to state whether it's AM or PM if someone is asking for the time, because they will already know if it's in the morning or in the afternoon.
