Professor Temple Grandin is a renowned author, speaker and Autism advocate who has and still is changing the cattle industry...
In this episode of the Thoughty Auti Podcast, Thomas Henley talks to Temple about his experience of Autism advocacy in the modern day, comparing it against Temples own experiences in the past
Kicking off the chat, they talk all about recent events in the media - touching briefly on Temples book 'Thinking In Pictures', her movie, and the more recent publications like 'Different NOT Less'.
Getting down into the meat of the episode, they chat about how the focus of Temples childhood was on manners, following work and developing hobbies... vastly different from the modern day focus on language, stimming, self-advocacy and identity
The professor explains she has substituted 'Emotional Complexity' with 'Intellectual Complexity' and the two theorize over the impact of work and relationships in overall Quality Of Life.
In the modern day, advocacy is done through social media platforms, and Temple highlights that this change has been difficult and potentially damaging for the autistic community (Thin Slice Judgements come to mind).
Ending the episode, they chat about positives and negatives to modern day advocacy, reminiscing on the shared difficulties on navigating the language and social landscapes.

Temple Grandin is evolving too, still learning too, and I do not regret her early years of teaching about mostly her type of autism. She was looking after herself and her own continual success and career like she needed to be doing! Self advocating from what she knows best. We have to remember she is not a neurologist, and not expect her to be. Though wow, of course autistic neurology is a great interest of hers and she has valuable, deep, and evolving insights.

In my 60s I just discovered why I tend to interrupt or misinterpret people in conservations. Hitherto I attributed this to eccentricity, dyslexia, & monotropism (which is obvious in my case). I could not get this right, until I discovered that my poor social skills were/are almost certainly due to ASD. Surprisingly, I have learnt to practice listening. Friends have noticed. I have a BSc and MSc, yet people find that my social skills don't match my intelligence. Thank you both for illuminating this issue for me!

Not recognizing if someone doesn’t like us can be very difficult because there are a lot of behavioral innuendos involved that we just don’t see.

Great talk! "Need the Different Kinds of Minds" greater perspective = greater wisdom therefore: great wisdom could = greater achievement possibilities created by different minds ...at the end of a storm hold your head up high... and perhaps ponder: what's your unique perspective?

I definitely have a math mind. My dad has always referred to it as an “engineering brain” that runs in the family. I thought that it was just general autism, but it’s really interesting to hear about the different subtypes of autism. I am definitely not a words/verbal person. 😅 My voice really only comes out accurately when I type. If I’m talking or listening, my ADHD can’t hold on to it all. A lot of it just sort of slips through my fingers. Oh interesting, I just realized I’m able to take in verbal instruction well enough because my mind organizes the information in a very mathematical way. But that only extends so far. I can’t do that sufficiently well for an entire lecture. I’ll either need to take notes or listen to it multiple times.

Omg I just realised how much I resent my dad. I've probably even told him without realising it by showing him Richard Faynman lessons from my father
