Yeah, I didn't know until recently that they pretty much painted everything. It makes me wonder what this stuff looked like new. Since well before photography even it's been stone with some things painted, the things that have lasted. How much of what was painted is completely gone to where it looks to us as though it was never painted? I'm sure different materials used, paint mixtures and dyes lasted due to the different sources in the paint (also location and exposure to sun.) It would be wild to see how it looked new (color schemes that we don't know about), even drop by for a visit to the one that was 500 years earlier. Who knows if this happened, but if the 500 year earlier one had been faithfully maintained during that time too? Or had it turned into an old place to them and seriously in need of restoration with the painting of certain things?

I really appreciate the recreation of landscaping around the structures. I always thought that ancient Egyptians, and Greeks and Romans would have loved beautiful plants and greenery adjacent to their buildings, but you basically never see any of that in pictures and drawings.

It was the place for the family to came togather in the evenings when the sun was low and it was cooler. A pool in the center of the garden, with lotus plants in it, brought additional cooling. In the temples there were gardens where plants for making perfumes grew. It is part of the ritual that the figures of the gods were rubbed with fragrant oils every day. Temples were places of beautiful fragrances.

Fabulous video - was just there today and was dying to see a reconstruction of this gorgeous temple. Thank you for posting. Couple of tips- On the side of Mentuhotep’s monument there are falcon gods decorating flat columns all along that side and there’s a second Sphinx recently installed at entrance. Also the temple originally had gardens that ran all the way to the Nile purposely lining up w Karnak temple on an east-west axis which served to receive the barque of Amun-Re for their annual festival. I can send you pictures of the falcon columns on the side if you’re interested. Amazing video overall!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

I wish egypts tourist and archaeological departments would come together and replant the temples garden terraces again. What we see is magical, but missing the gardens would show how breathtaking the whole temple would have been, and also embody the physical progress from the lush greenery, fruit and flowers and herbs of life into the temple of stone, barrenness and death, before returning back outside into the Egyptians idea of a lush paradise in heaven. It would explain and educate tourists about the Egyptians idea of life and death, but also become a huge beautiful jewel in encouraging tourists back to Egypt since the civil upheval.

If extraterrestrials were to land on earth and ask what is the single finest work of architecture on your planet, I would have to pick the Temple of Hatshepsut. Only the Parthenon, the Pantheon, and perhaps Louis Kahn’s Yale Museum of British Art rival this temple. But they all subtly lack its majesty and almost divine simplicity. It’s too bad she was perceived as such a threat to the pharaohs that followed her. But for all that it’s beautiful preserved.
