Very interesting watch, as I worked on data from the Brent Field at university.

Hi Mike, as always: many thanks for sharing and triggering discussion. Glad to see that my own work was connected to 2 of your top tens, although not in the geological phase of my career. Suggestion: Would be nice to see a video about the 10 boldest moves in the UKCS history. I would nominate: - 49/17-1: building a platform to drill an exploration well - Brent: An unbelievable outstep into harsh, unknown territory, decided in a hurry to get results before the 4th round. - Angus: Caught out the entire industry by surprise. 5mmb standalone in an area where the company had no infrastructure. - Buzzard: Cleaned up the massive misperception amongst geologists that there is no sand source in the area.

Hi Helge, Hope you are well and enjoying the content of our videos. We have a number of educational videos in editing, addressing different aspects of the industry. Next up is the appraisal drilling of Isabella (due tomorrow 08 Sep 22) - we will also continue the "How Oilfields Work" series. Great to hear from you. All the best, Mike

Are you going to tell us Helge? SomehowI dodged all these bullets! But I have some horror stories I could tell. Perhaps another day....... Hope you are well. ATB Helge, Mike

The challenge with these videos is making them succinct and not-too-technical as we get feedback from many who find them educational. One of the problems in presenting at a blistering pace on many subjects I know little about is for the occasional clanger to slip by. For example I meant to say Liassic shales for the Wytch Farm source rock but said sands instead! Well we all make mistakes - as the Dalek said climbing off the dustbin. (J Carrott classic line)

Hi Trove Firstly FYI Alan Foum pointed me to your channel 👍🏻 Now, one thing I’ve never quite understood is why Brent always gets more love than Forties; if I follow things correctly Forties outpaced Brent in peak daily production, it was the first (or first major) U.K. North Sea oilfield discovered? And unlike Brent it’s STILL going, and even had new a satellite platform added some years ago! I was a wellsite geologist on it for a couple of years and we drilled injectite exploration wells from the platform and even found a shallow gas reservoir that was tied back to the platform and used for power. Now I AM biased but come on - how does Brent beat all that? 😬 PS - surprised not to see Elgin Franklin on here, if only because it’s so hot!

Hi Alistair. Loved your post! I too worked Forties and it is an amazing field and huge success story for both BP and Apache. There are so many fields that could have made the top 10. You could have also mentioned why we put Kimmeridge ahead of Forties! 🤣😂 Brent established the "Brent Blend" crude assay and became known as the world benchmark for crude oil sales. As well as being a fantastic field, Forties & FPS have both longevity and a massive number of third parties flowing oil from satellite fields to offset operating expenses for the host asset (and pipeline). Brent and Brent Pipeline System always had the competition from Ninian Pipeline System so didn't get the same third party business offset. Forties is one of the finest, relatively shallow reservoirs, with ideal quality crude. Brent field had both Brent & Statfjord reservoirs, was great reservoir quality (but not as good as Forties) and much gassier. Both had good aquifer support but Forties aquifer is world class. I could go on. They are both great fields and both could easily have made a top ten. Our video did not go for the "10 biggest" but tried to convey some elements of the range of great oilfields developed on the UKCS. Elgin Franklin were amazing feats of both subsurface and topsides engineering. I am in awe at what was achieved in these HPHT fields. Again, definitely worthy of making a "Top 10 Best" selection. Hope our choices haven't put you off the channel. We have videos on all sorts of interesting and newsworthy O&G subjects. I hope you subscribe and we see you back on our channel. Keep the comments coming too - you will keep us on the straight and narrow! 👍 ATB, Mike

@@TROVE-1stSubsurface Not at all Mike! I’m the discipline lead for a Norwegian wellsite geology department so I’m actually probably going to start sending your videos to my staff to watch as training; wellsite geologists are generally sent out to drill a well and then kicked straight off and never get invited to participate in planning or wrap up so I think videos like your one on Water Breakthrough or Alan’s video on Exploration Contracts add much appreciated context and allow us rigpigs and gravel-monkeys the opportunity to decider Town’s motives and, more importantly, language! I just couldn’t help myself but leave a comment on Forties because she’s been so integral to U.K. oilfield history (and a leading example of savvy CAPEX & mature field development by Apache) yet all you usually hear about is Brent-this and Brent-that 😆 Looking forward to working my way through more of your videos while I tease out which ones to recommend to my staff

@@alistaircook7905 Another most enjoyable post Alistair. We are vehemently agreeing with one another that Forties is such a great field. Your comments will remain alongside our video and I hope others "Like" your comment to show their support. On the subject of which videos to recommend - I wouldn't cherry pick - every video tackles some different aspect of the O&G subsurface from all around the world and all inform and hopefully educate. Videos your team should watch (IMHO) include "The World's Most Expensive Dry Hole", Venus-1, Ekofisk and the to-be-continued series on how oilfields work. Better still, simply send out the link below to our channel and let the team work through them when all is quiet on the rig floor. ru-vid.comvideos. I have reached out to many wellsite loggers and geologists, as these critical parts of the O&G success chain are often overlooked. The more the wellsite personnel understands what the "beach" is thinking/planning/interested in - it's a win-win for everyone. There is greater satisfaction in knowing why you were being hassled to increase sampling frequency, calibrate gas readings, recalculate lag times etc etc. The most important, by far in my humble opinion, is the safety aspects - particularly around pressure. We are putting together a training course to take a more complete story of "How Oilfields work" out on the road. We plan to concentrate on one field and cover various aspects of learning as we go through the story. Please watch the channel for more details........ We should dedicate a video to the wellsite workers who are at the sharp end, working in challenging conditions and don't always get to share in the glory of another successful and safely-drilled discovery! ATB, Mike.

One could say that fields that were underestimated lost some value, because the production capacity, slot number etc were too small, but the reserves were produced eventually so it was just a time delay. There are usually ways to add-on to a platform, but an overdesigned platform on a small field will never pay back, so it is probably best to be cautious. Some of those older fields benefitted from new drilling and production technology, and maybe higher oil prices, unlocking reserves, increasing the recovery factor. So it would be interesting to also compare the original stooip to the current estimate of stooip.
@TROVE-1stSubsurface
@TROVE-1stSubsurface Год назад
Hi Simon. In most cases I seem to look at, both STOIIP AND reserves vary throughout field life. I agree sometimes reserves may take longer to get out, but the field achieves (or exceeds) it's sanctioned URR. I also agree over designed platforms on small fields don't work. Phased developments make total sense. Thanks for your comments.
