Ten big rules of kite-flying

My 700th kite video. DON'T EXPECT ANY REAL RULES - this is meant as a fun video, and was made as a joke, not a lesson! With no kite-flying recently because of bad weather, I got bored and put this together from old video clips. I hope the message comes across that kite-flying is meant to be fun and "rules" should be kept to a minimum - basically, just be safe, and enjoy what you're doing. I have made other videos on how to fly kites, how to tie line to them, how to anchor them, and other useful points, but this one is definitely just for amusement.

Jim THANK YOU! I'm JUST FINDING YOU AND I SEE I HAVE A LOT OF CATCHING UP TO DO! As a Man who has way too much kid still in his 52 yrs old body, I WANT TO GET A BUNCH AND GO KITE FLYING! So maybe I start with a couple of easy ones FIRST, but I'd like to try the many on one line trick! WOW! YOU HAVE SKILLS!
@JimNicholls
@JimNicholls 3 года назад
You're just a youngster - I'm 80 now, and was in my sixties when I started flying, so you've got plenty of time. Don't make the mistake I did and get totally addicted. I have far too many kites now, and some of them will probably never be flown again, but I'm doing my best to dig out some of the neglected ones and give them another chance. Having fun is the important thing. The "ten rules" were a joke aimed at a guy who takes kite-flying far too seriously. And take a look at all my "How to..." videos, which may help, especially if you want to stack a few kites: ru-vid.complaylists . I have 1,682 videos altogether, but don't waste your time watching all of them!

10 rules for kite flying 1 never feed your kite to a big tree feed it to a small tree or a skinny tree because they need to grow 2. don't get mad if there is no wind and you can not fly your kite learn to fly a remote control plane - they do best when there is no wind 3. have fun 4 if your kite goes into a spin and bangs its head on the ground don't get mad, show some kindness and patience - the kite is still learning 5. if your kite flies away - don't worry if it really loves you it will find a way back home if it did not really love you then get a new kite 6. if your kite breaks a wing don't send it to the garbage dump to die broken wings can be fixed 7. have fun 8 while flying your kite - imagine all things beautiful 9 if a hawk attacks your kite - don't hate, show love and maybe they will become friends 10. have fun, its better than not having fun

@lw216316
@lw216316 8 лет назад
thank you. I fly remote control airplanes on calm days. It occurred to me that I could satisfy my need to fly on windy days by flying kites. So I'm doing research before I get into it. Looks like a single string delta might be a good starting point and then move up to the 2 string sport kites. May good winds blow your way.
@JimNicholls
@JimNicholls 8 лет назад
I wouldn't call two-line kites "moving up!" They are totally different, and although I have some two-line kites I find them boring (maybe because I'm not good at flying them.) You can fly single line kites all day, but the two-line ones I get bored with after half an hour at most. If you like the idea of the two-liners, buy one first, as single line ones will not teach you anything about them. Have fun, anyway!
@lw216316
@lw216316 8 лет назад
You could be right, I fly remote control airplanes and thought kite flying might be a good alternative on windy days. The 1st video on my youtube search was a 2 line kite doing stunts and it got my interest. My only experience with a one line kite was as a kid with a dime store basic/cheap kite. What do you see as the pros and enjoyments of a one string type?
@JimNicholls
@JimNicholls 8 лет назад
It doesn't appeal to everyone, naturally, but to a lot of us, once you get a kite or two in the air, you forget all your problems and enjoy the miracle of flight while still anchored to the ground. It's hard to explain, but if the bug bites then it's hard to stop. Most people are content with hand-flying one kite, which is great, but I like to "paint the sky" with kites for the entertainment of anyone who cares to view them.

There certainly are rules but they don't stop you from having fun. 1. Do not fly kites near power lines or over roadways. 2. Do not fly kites near other kite flyers or people if you have cutting line such as manja or Kevlar 3. Do not fly kites to annoy people, i.e near sunbathers or buzz people with a stunt kites. 4. Do not fly kites near air ports or in prohibited air space. 5. Keep your kite below the legal limit which is from 100 - 120 metres (328 - 400 ft) above ground level in most countries Otherwise have fun.

Good to know that you've started flying, David, and I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun. A delta is a good choice for a first kite, but if you're anything like me, you won't stop there! Running is strictly not necessary, and you're a good deal younger than I was when I started flying (I'm coming up to 82 now), so you should have many years to enjoy it.

I'm glad you saw the point of it - I made it as a reaction to someone I know who thinks there are strict rules about everything and kite-flying has to be done in such a way that it's no fun at all. Apart from not endangering, frightening or annoying other people, there are in fact a few rules beyond the usual "avoid power lines and lightning" stuff. First, get to know what kind of kite flies in which wind conditions. People try to fly very light kites in high wind and then complain that it's "junk" because it spins. No, it just needs a long tail in strong breeze. They also try to fly a heavy parafoil in a light breeze and complain that it won't go up. No, that kite needs a good steady breeze, and a big delta would work better. Second, know when a kite can be dangerous. I have a larger stunt parafoil kite that can exert tremendous pull in a sudden strong gust. It can injure me if it knocks me down; it can injure a bystander if I lose control of it near the ground. I have a smaller stunt parafoil that exerts only minimal pull even in strong gusts. That's the one to fly on a crowded beach. And third, know what weight of line each kite needs. If you just buy a cheapie kite, you probably don't care much...unless you become sentimentally attached to a certain kite after flying it for years. If it's a more expensive kite, you really don't want to see the line break and the kite end up in a tree. Fourth, buy some extra kites, I recommend small single-line parafoils, to have ready in case a kid comes up to you fascinated. Your opening line is, "Do *you* like to fly kites? Really? You're not just saying that? Do *you* want to fly one right now?"
@JimNicholls
@JimNicholls 5 лет назад
Dan, this video was made to poke fun at a friend who takes everything to do with kite-flying far too seriously. Yes, there are lots of things to take into consideration (many of which I've covered in my 1,393 kite videos). But in years of flying hundreds of different kites over thousands of hours, I've found it all just boils down to "Be safe, have fun!" Anything else is detail, and that could go on for ever.

Where’s the real rules of kite flight. Everything has to follow the rules of physics.
@JimNicholls
@JimNicholls 5 лет назад
Anyone who understands the physics of kite-flying would have to be a real genius. We are at the mercy of the wind, which is ever-changing, and the effects it has on a kite are many - trying to calculate all of them would need a super-computer. Best to just enjoy it and not worry too much about rules or physics, although you can learn a bit with experience.

I don't know if many of them will fly well as a single-line kite. I have never tried to do it, but the important thing would be to make sure that when you join the two lines together (or replace them with new ones), that the lengths are exactly the same, otherwise the kite will be permanently unbalanced.

@@gracebarnes8520 There are over 1,600 more videos on this channel, many of which might help your problem. This is just one of many that try to give advice: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f2fP9G7bsUE.html . The "10 rules" video was to spoof a friend who thinks everything in kite-flying has rigid rules and everyone should follow them, which takes away all of the fun.

This video was made as a joke, to make fun of people I know who try to invent all kinds of "rules" about kite-flying which are totally unnecessary and take all the fun out of it. I have made another 1,588 videos, in many of which I give hints on flying - see, for example, this one, and there are lots of others: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f2fP9G7bsUE.html .

@JimNicholls

That's the whole point. Apart from keeping safe, there should be no "rules" for kite-flying, although some people try to make them, which tends to put people off flying completely. Have fun, be safe - that's it!!!

it's a lot cheaper then flying R/C model aircraft I used to do them in my younger days and with the fuel at nearly £40 it's not cheap stuff just keep it away from naked flame
@JimNicholls

Some people do both, of course, like my friend David (CirrusRC on RU-vid), but the price of fuel would certainly be a deterrent.

Jim love watching your kite flying streams only came across this channel by mistake just amazing I am sixty this year last time I flew a kite I was 10 However looking at your videos and a big plus for me with Donnie knees no running so many great tips about flying kites so I have ordered my first kite a small 7 ft delta So looking forward to seeing how it go's . Thank you once again for your brilliant videos . DAVID BELFAST .

@JimNicholls 6 месяцев назад
Hi David, nice to know that a young fellow like you is taking up kite-flying. We oldies (I'm 83) won't be around much longer, so we need some young(er) blood coming in. A delta is a good way to start, and I hope you have a lot of fun with yours. If you have any queries, check out my playlist which has a lot of helpful hints: ru-vid.complaylists . I assume you're in Belfast, NI, not the Belfast just up the road from me here in Christchurch, NZ. I'm a bit puzzled, as clicking on your channel ID brings up somebody with a very different name to yours.
