Ten Candles is a roleplaying game of tragic horror. In this RPG gameplay we play the module "Adrift" where a group of survivors are stranded on a cruise ship far from any port of call. What started out as a vacation getaway has now become a living horror as the sky has gone dark. Clinging to flickering lights our cast tries to retake the ship and fight the nightmarish Them as the ship lurches towards destinations unknown.
Adrift is an actual play of Ten Candles and we cover character creation and how to play as we go through the game.

You all do a very good job of not talking over each other but also moving the game along. Can't wait to run this with my friends! Also I liked the 'shambling mound' d and d reference!

Hi, first of all I wanna thank you for your videos! I took a lot of inspiration from your video of "The last boat" for my first session of Ten Candles ever and it was a success. In two days I'm gonna run a second session using the "Adrift" module and I think I will take inspiration from your video this time as well! I only have a doubt about this session: it seemed to me that from a certain point on there wasn't a real "goal" for the players. I mean: in "The last boat" the goal (reach the boat) was always there, from the beginning to the end, giving them hope until the last minute. Here, instead, they started looking for the kitchen but later in the session they seemed to wander randomly from one deck to another, without a real point to reach. I'm pretty sure the particular setting and antagonists chosen for this session were made to make them feel lost, but my fear is that without a clear goal players will lose interest in going on. How did your players feel after the session? Were they satisfied about this particular point or the lack of a goal made them lose the "trying to survive even if it seems impossible" feeling?

Thank you for that well thought out comment/question. As you pointed out, the driving factor for this scenario is not nearly as strong as "The Last Boat." In this scenario the ship's engine kicks back on and the party can press on that investigation. Where are they headed? Who's running the ship? Etc. As this game is entirely improv it can get stuck spinning wheels at times and often the GM follows up on something a player presses on or a truth that ends up going down a narrow plot path. Running Ten Candles requires to be in the moment while also creating opportunities for players to go somewhere new. Tapping them on the ship opens the game up for horror but keeping them from staying in one place too long can often feel artificial. Finding the right balance between cornering them and chasing them can be hard in an improv game like this. From what I remember about this playthrough is that we all had fun and were satisfied with the story but it was very much a departure from the quality of the first game. Something that can easily be chalked up to performing in front of a internet audience though and similar to experiences we've had in other content we have on the channel as well. Hope that helps answer your questions and welcome to the channel!

ive watched several of your videos now, i will say the dread campaign initially turned me off. the first 2 hours were almost unlistenable. however this ten candles session really stands out. martin, you have some really great moments describing the horror and accentuating the suspense - even the voices you do, specifically the "NO" when the party flashed the creature with a flashlight midway gave me a good chill. i very much look forward to more sessions and thank you for introducing me to ten candles.

Welcome to the channel Tyler! Glad to hear you're enjoying some of the content. We have two different Ten Candles, if you were interested in checking out our other AP of it, it's called "The Last Boat." Which Dread did you watch and generally the first hour or two we usually joke around a bit so I'm assuming it was more the pacing/humor that made it unlistenable or was it something else?
@ForceFlw23
@ForceFlw23 7 лет назад
i have watched both! loved the last boat as well. "echoes" is the dread campaign im referring too, although i will certainly be watching the others. i love to put them on as background when i draw or paint minis. i am referring to mostly the pacing/humor although the sound hiccups were a small part ( i know you explained this was because of new equipment) my small professional constructive criticism is perhaps to have a 3rd party edit down the small talk sections. keep up the good work!

The sound hiccups were pretty bad. I think we have a hard time not going silly for the first part of dread each time honestly (Boomtown is fairly similar to Echoes in pacing/humor). The channel has plenty of content kinda like that. Our Star Wars campaign is pretty ridiculous for a while early on before getting more serious, but our Urban Shadows campaign, Friends Like These, is pretty similar to Ten Candles. It's very dense and on point so to speak. If you have any interest in watching some campaign play I would highly recommend checking out the first episode of Friends Like These. Content is pretty mature, but no moreso than anything else you've listened to.

I love going on cruises. This may not be the best thing for me to listen to. Oh well, I dont have a cruise planned for this year. So lets see how your world ends.
@NerdsandStuff

A few of us are pretty fond of cruises as well. Went on my first one last year and realized how exciting and terrifying the ships would be for a setting! The claustrophobia, the stranded in the middle of nowhere, the familiar yet foreign feel of them. Then you cram hundreds of people from all over the world on board and it can make for such a unique experience.

I'm planning to run the cruise ship scenario next week. One concern I have about it -- Did you guys find it more challenging than usual to come up with "these things are true"? I am a little worried that being on the cruise ship confines your responses, and might make it hard for people to imagine what is possible (particularly if they have not been on a cruise ship before). Whereas, in the last boat and other scenarios, you have a much wider range of possibilities, and a more normal world to draw from?
@NerdsandStuff
@NerdsandStuff 6 лет назад
While it's been a while since we played this scenario I do remembering it being a lot harder with establishing truths and because of this I think players or I established changes in the weather more than ideal. The confined space makes it harder as well as the possibility of having never been on a cruise ship. One possible recommendation would be to use truths to help establish small intricacies of the environment that was not seen before. Cruise ships always have interesting places and you can use truths to flesh them out or get you to new ones for the next scene easily. That way you can explore the ship more than we did. Hope this helps =D

Thank you for your reply! I did notice that most of the scenes did not advance time or location, which is odd for 10 candles. Despite that, I thought that you ran an incredible campaign, and did a wonderful job incorporating everyone's contributions. I only meant to watch the beginning of the game to get a sense for how you established the first scene, but got sucked into the story and watched until the end. I think I will remind people at the beginning of the game what kinds of amenities a cruise ship has -- a casino, nightclubs, shops, restaurants, life boats, etc. If they try to use life boats to abandon ship, I am also not opposed to the action moving into the water, or onto a nearby island.

The first time I ran this scenario (off camera) we ended up at an unknown island so I think that's absolutely a perfect direction if the narrative takes you there! Thanks for the kind words, we're always happy to hear of others enjoying our tales. Good luck running your adventure and feel free to reach out to me here or on twitter for any followup questions or just letting everyone know how your adventures went! =D

Inspired me to do get the game and play it with friends in a few days :) A question: Even if its a "zero" prep game, do you do any prep for GMing this?
@NerdsandStuff
@NerdsandStuff 7 лет назад
There's a few things you can do to prep to play/run this. First is I try to become as familiar with the rules as possible before running this. With the lights off and only other light as candle light this is definitely not a game you take a quick look at the rules while playing as it completely ruins the immersion and atmosphere, so be as familiar with the rules as possible. Second is that I read over the modules at the back of the book. Sometimes I let my party pick which one they want to run and other times I'll pick one that I think might work best for the group that I've gathered. If you have one picked out to run, write down sample locations book lists and maybe a few more to get setting ideas. Don't plan these settings out, just make a list of places you can lean towards during play. Lastly might be something like equipment checks. Make sure you have plenty of 3x5 notecards for play and dice that are easy to read by the light of one or two tealight candles. I give each of my players several notecards before play, one for each of their traits, moments, etc. as well as one to make a tabletent for their name (for other players and myself to see names) and one for quick notes. When there's one or two candles left lit during the game the dice can be incredibly hard to read. Make sure there's good contrast between the pips and the die for easiest end game play. One of the last pieces of advice I would give is: When you are in game, running the game, take your time with your players. The tealights will melt the wax pretty quickly and make the candles look as though they're burning out fast (but there's still plenty of wax left as liquid in them). This creates a pretty fun illusion for the players and yourself where you might feel like the candles can go out at any second, but in fact they can burn for 3-4+ hours. Take your time to describe the world, let them build environment with you. Leave some things a mystery to explore, and others outright make horrifying. The atmosphere of this game is amazing! Take the time to paint the mental picture with them and the results will be amazing! Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any specific questions and follow back up after your game. I always love to hear how it goes, especially to know that if I helped set you (and your table) up for success. =D

Here I am! Thanks a lot. It was really helpful but sadly the session had to be cancled due to one player which had a appointment at the doctor and another which had his driving test. :D I'll tell you how it was if we actually play :)
