For me John was the best making up lyrics and Paul with the music. Check out our Beatles-inspired songs and tell us what you think! ru-vid.com/show-UCehDvhdKzlLvT9oz9BLWD1Q
"The man in the crowd with the multi-coloured mirrors on his hob-nail boots" was about some guy in Liverpool who had mirrors on the toes of his boots that he would use to look up women's skirts.
my favorite line is about the soap impression I dont know the meaning but I imagine some man who lost his mind after a divorce, carving a soap impression of his lover because he cant stop thinking of her
Gotta say I always loved George the most tho, he was the “silent beatle” and that’s what I loved about him. It was hard for awhile for me to go back and forth between John and paul bc their both so equally talented, but it came down to who George was as a person.
Been a fan 40+ years and still keep going back and forth between Paul and George. Expect your mind and artistic inclinations of the moment not to settle as well!
Yeah, this song was left on the album about heroin, while so many of those beautiful songs that appeared Harrison's on All Things Must Pass where left out. Imo, a song written and vetoed as not being a Beatles song in 66' would have fit this side even better, not to mention it was extreamly deep.... The Art of Dieing. Jmo
@@mobiditch6848 Fads always seem to start on the Left Coast and move their way east. So watch out, America. Californians may soon start screwing and crapping at the same time.
@@fku952 Lennon's quote just seemed to be an interesting commentary on culture. We embrace violence but are ashamed of sex. We treat sex as if it's worse than violence, like it's a bad thing.
@Johnny Morphine No... It was liquid LSD formed into a thin gel, cured, then cut into tiny pieces. Here we had 4 way amber & brown windowpane. You could see through it (hence the name.) If you were brave enough & put one in your eye, it would dissolve in less than 2 minutes & you would sky rocket off to Mars instantly. It was the good shit. Trees would turn into cartoons, you'd feel yourself melt through walls, everything was alive etc. I did a lot of it & loved it!
What hippy said- they are translucent gel tabs, a form of conveyance for Uncle Cid. I can attest that windowpane was still readily available for dissolving on (someone who isn't you) tongues in 2004, as thats the last time I had the quixotic pleasure of seeing it in person(PA, USA). But being its just a vehicle, im sure that as we speak some trays of it are congealing somewhere in a town near you. Cheeahs
This was a lot of stuff I didn't know about one of the Beatles' best songs. Thanks! Hearing how many takes it took reminds me of an interview George gave in the 70s when he was asked what made the Beatles so good. He replied "We worked harder than anyone else". And "Happiness ..." is proof of that.
Probably one of George Martin’s greatest productions as well as one of the best Beatles songs. The man was splicing and pasting before the technology was even available! Excited for the channel to reach 100K! So happy for you and the rest of the HollyHobs team! Edit: Chris Thomas took over, my bad. Needless to say the talent of every person working with them did the final product justice
Splicing music or speech with 1/4 Inch tape, a White Chinagraph, and a razor blade is not all that difficult if you are organized and without distractions. You get into a sort of zone where all you can think about is the editing task at hand. Bits of tape held onto the tape machine (Usually a Tandberg machine for spoken word, or maybe an Otari MTR10 or a Studer A80 for music as they could hold NAB spools) with words like "Breath" or "Um", "Er" or stuff like "last 4 bars of take 1" or "Alternate ending" in White Chinagraph pencil were valuable tools to get it just right. I learned how to edit with tape but tape is sooooo expensive these days, that I don't bother with it.. and after re-learning on digital, I figure that it's made editing that much easier so any untrained kid can do it.
Great Video !!! Appreciate all the research you put into this video & others. One of the most Powerful songs on the White Album - both lyrically & vocally !!! John at his Best !!!
"Happiness Is ... The HollyHobs unique take on my favorite band, THE BEATLES." The HollyHobs is one of my favorite sources for informative and totally delightful info and trivia about all things BEATLES... I love this place, and I hope you never stop giving us all The Beatles as no one else can.
I'd love to see a video about Across the Univers, and why such a beautiful song was never truly finished and properly recorded. Thanks, I enjoy your video very much.
There's just too many to choose from. They are like a Labyrinth with magic everywhere. They were and still are untouchable and we are gleefully overwhelmed in their wake. What a treasure, what a gift to last a lifetime and a really big shoutout for ''Hollyhobs'' for always painting a beautiful picture of their phenomena for each new generation to be amazed that this actually happened during the 60s. Thanks to everyone who admired The Beatles because their magic still brings so much happiness to those who just have a listen. The Beatles had it all and heaps more:)
I love hearing about the Beatles story. It is the love of their music. Also when they noticed how good each other were. And appreciated each others talent. So much talent cannot be tied down so it was only a matter time for a breakup. I only wish they had found time to get back for on more tune together.
When i heard the news that john Lennon was shot and killed I felt too numb to believe that is was really true that he was dead. I went to my radio in my bedroom and the station was playing all the Lennon solo and Beatle songs like all the other rock stations around the world. But when they played Happiness is a Warm Gun I snapped and smashed my fist into the radio and broke it I was so pissed off i cried for over an hour my brother his girlfriend and my father all came into my room to console me they understood what the Beatles and Lennon's music meant to me. So nobody got mad that i busted the radio they all understood and cried with me. And if my mother were alive then she hated John Lennon for his JESUS comments she would have cried too that night.
@@ingridfong-daley5899 Thank you for your comment yeah the emotion for me that night was so bad hurt me for years I could not listen to Beatles or Lennon music for like 2 years till i found some other Beatle people that got me through my funk and now really love to listen to the music all the time
I truly understand you because I love John Lennon since I was 6 Found out he was in Heaven about a year after I started loving him Even though I know he is happy now, it really hurts that he isn’t with us anymore Wish I would have met him but unfortunately I was born 7 years after God decided to take him with his angels That makes it hurt even more He was a beatiful person
My friends mother felt the same, after John comment about Jesus. It was around 67, and I mention the Beatles while visiting my friends. and I was ask not to talk about the Beatles, for exactly that reason. And it was years before I heard the exact recording of the interview, where I realized if she ( friends mother ) would have heard what he was pointing out to be true, I might have been able to speak of the Beatles again, at least in their house, but I was only 9 years old at the time, and she was very religious and catholic. and at the time it did seem like the kids were paying more attention to their music, than Jesus, and like he said he wasn't saying they were greater or better. The man is definitely a legend..
"Please Please Me" by talking about the unique way John and Paul often sang together in harmony rather than on the same key. Very huge aspect of their appeal to me.
Thank you so much HollyHobs, this instantly became my favourite Beatles song when I heard it, and this is now by default one of my favourite videos of yours!
Can you do a 10 Interesting Facts about the Carnival of Light. As much as I would love to hear the song, I feel it is best left unheard. Think about it, the majority of the song's intrigue is because it is unheard; if it is heard, it loses that. 1) The master reel should be pressed up. 2) Fitted w/ a sleeve of beautiful artwork; befitting the time it was created. 3) And exhibited in a museum, behind impenetrable glass, in perpetuity. *This would be a lovely marriage between art & music; a marriage The Beatles have long adored *The song is an experimental song *The presentation would be experimental: "The unheard song."; like the bottle of wine not meant to drink.
It’s a crap song the remaining Beatles are embarrassed about. From all accounts it’s disjointed and leads no where. Yes, it’s Paul’s attempt to get into avant garde prior to John. I just feel it’s a huge build up to nothing. Would I love to hear it? Yes! But based off of everything I’ve read it’s not very worth while. Including said testimony from other Beatles. I agree it’s best left unheard. You do know at some point it will be released. I find it impressive that it hasn’t been released in some form by a bootlegger or someone with access to the master tapes. What more interesting to me is the bootlegs of the songs the Beatles gave away. Like A world without love, and early songs they gave away.
HIAWG is one of the few tracks that the Beatles used the Bartell Fretless Guitar. On the track Happiness is a Warm Gun, the characteristic timbre of a fretless guitar is unmistakable (0’:44”- 0’:58”). it was also on Helter Skelter and Savoy Truffle
This is my first ever comment on a RU-vid video but I can’t help but thank you for your work. Even though The Beatles were falling apart towards the end, its stories like these that remind us that no matter what, when they were together and collaborating as one unit, they indeed were the greatest of all time! Thank you for all your hard work in keeping their majestic legacy alive ❤️
I don’t mind your videos being too long! Others, likely. The info is worth the time. I’d be interested of how the band influenced each others’ writing as they evolved from “Lennon & McCartney” to Lennon, McCartney, Harrison. Songs such as Mr. Kite to Elenor Rigby or Strawberry Fields to Penny Lane. Love your vids and research/knowledge. Thanks!
In terms of the 15 years I’ve enjoyed being a Beatles hyper-demi-mega-fan of The Beatles, there have only been 3 songs of there’s that I have never overplayed no matter how hard I’ve tried: 1. Happiness is a Warm Gun 2. I Am The Walrus 3. I’m Only Sleeping
Glass Onion was a deliberate attempt by John to mislead all the conspiracists who were looking for hidden meanings in the Beatles songs. Thus the reasons for references to previous Beatles songs. John was not a fan of the song calling it "a throwaway" John had done this previously on ' I am the Walrus' - "yellow matter custard" for instance was just a reference to a rhyme John and his mates used sing as children in Liverpool - as John said to his friend Pete Shotton - "let the f****ers work this one out" lol
Both of John and Yoko say that the used but never injected because they were scared of needles. I think those lines are sexual, but that’s a great interpretation that probably isn’t to far from truth given a line like a day in the life has is a similarly doubly suggestive meaning
For the video compilation youd like to do, I love your "you should leave this unread". This is something special that applies to Beatles and hundreds of real life situations!
I miss those days when pop music was still evolving. That all came to an end somewhere around 1990 or so and every since then, pop, rap, hip hop, it's all remained essentially unchanged for 30 odd years, the 1990 Grammy awards sounds just like the 2019 Grammy awards, and young people, teenagers and 20 somethings may not know this, but there was a time when pop music sounded different from year to year, it was always changing and evolving and so you could always expect a " new sound ", something different on next year's records. The Beatles were masters at this, every record was different than the previous. Now it's all the same thing over and over and over again and if I were a teenager today I'd be really pissed about that and these days, the phrase " new sound " is something the music industry carefully avoids.
That's why so many reactors on You Tube are rediscovering prog rock and classic rock. Many are amazed at the craftsmanship, the hooks, the thought-out lyrics.
I love your videos, they give me so much more knowledge on my favorite band. And my favorite video was your maxwells silver hammer, and my favorite song of yours is mr Mortimer.
A masterpiece of a song, but let's not get too hyperbolic about it being one their last collaborative efforts. They were in the middle of recording a double album at the time, doing over a hundred takes of several songs on that album, including a George song that didn't even make the album, and they would go on to record two more albums. Yes, there was tension, yes, they were on a path which had only one ending, their breaking up, but you can also tell they're having a lot of fun as well.
Damn I loved this! What a great clip and channel - I've watched a couple of your Beatles facts now. Thanks for all the tidbits and factoids about this tune!
I'll never hear the song the same again. Always wondered about the words in this song because I knew John was a master word crafter. Wonderful video. Loved it.
White is the best. Happiness has been my favourite since Christmas 1968. So have The White. I cried. I laughed. I was totally flabbergasted in my 14 year old body. It was the best moment in years. Such a Great Album. With Love 🥰 🙏☮️
love ur channel bro, as some1 from liverpool we all basically grow up on the beatles its so cool seein some1 from across the sea with so much passion for them n their music keep it goin
Glad to see you highlighting the genius of John. His putting together of snippets from articles though, is not the implied plagiarism you hint at. Rather than the snippets, it's how they were put together into a potent and highly relevant song. It was John's innate genius. It's why John WAS the Beatles and the sole reason for their magnitude and impact upon the world.
This is my first video I have seen of your channel. I am a huge Beetles fan and I really enjoyed this. You have a new subscriber my friend. I am looking forward to watching some of the other stuff on your channel!
Great video. One of my all time favorite Beatles songs. I loved your parody. I also enjoy the feeling of a warm gun in my hand. I've accidentally touched the barrel of my AR15 a couple of times after shooting a couple of 30 round mags. Not much happiness in those moments. I don't advise it. Anyhoo, you continue to make some of the most entertaining Beatles content on the youtube. Rock on.
