This episode covers the reign of King John and the problems he had securing the Angevin inheritance and the subsequent issues his baron's posed. These problems culminated in the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 which severely limited the strength of John and his son, Henry III, whose reign was overshadowed by the document.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

Eh, probably a mixture of both. >(he never lost all his french possessions) I could've phrased that better, I meant all the territory he lost to France, but not necessarily ALL his territory in France. As crazy as this sounds, we kind of owe a debt to John. If he and then his son Henry had not lost Normandy and Anjou, then their would probably never of been focus on the growth of Middle English in the 13th and 14th Centuries (i.e. The Hundred Years War) and the English Speaking world today might instead be a French or Latin one, with English relegated to a minor language on the verge of extinction like Cornish or Manx (spoken on the Isle of Man) or at the very least, English would of taken longer to gain prominence or of been relegated to a regional language like Welsh or Scots Gaelic.

John's sobriquet, 'Lackland' had nothing to do with his loss of land on the Continent. He was given it long before he became King, when it was highly unlikely that he would inherit any land. In fact, he was given the nickname by his father after King Henry had made clear the distribution of his domains when he died, and John was left nothing.

@intergalactic92

My general opinion is that John was dealt a bad hand with much of the failures of his reign being a result of Richard's failings. The expensive wars and the ransom meant that there wasn’t much money left for John to go to war himself, plus I wonder if the reason the Barons were so unruly under John was in part down to the fact Richard rarely set foot in England, leaving the barons in charge. So essentially they had grown used to having the power and didn’t like the fact they suddenly had a king actually taking interest in his realm.

@@Man_United_USA Depends what you mean by 'people'. To the English, Richard's first language was French, he was an absentee king spending most of his time in France or the holy land, visiting England only when he needed more money to fund his wars. Quick note. Magna Carta was not signed but affixed with John seal. And John does not agree to Magna Carta at runnymead, he in fact agrees to the articles of the barrons. A document that still exists in the British library. Its a shopping list of demands that becomes Magna Carta when its set out in a more legal manner. Four of these remain. Two in the British Library. One in Lincoln and one in Salisbury

Just note that the "English" kings had these lands in France because originally they were French themselves (ethnically and spoke French) and they inherited these lands by birth right or mariage. They considered these lands as their homeland, spent a great deal of time there and mostly used England as a source or revenue and manpower in their feodal wars against the French king, their overlord. Because yes, the lands in France, like the counties and duchies of the Angevin Empire were still part of the Kingdom of France and the Kings of England were vassals of the King of France for these. In fact, this part of English history turns very much around the French and the struggles between their Kings and their nobles (who happened to be very powerful for some of them)

John's marriage was a bit of a disaster itself. He stole the bride who was supposed to marry someone else (supposedly because the alliance would make his vassals too powerful? and/or because she was super young and pretty and he was super horny? it was unclear in the lecture I watched). This enraged the affected vassals who appealed to the French king, who then invaded John's lands. So he'd caused this problem in the first place. To compound the problem, John had consistently treated his nobles so poorly that he had a hard time getting their support when it mattered. John's reign is one surprised pikachu meme after another.
