Ten Minute Scones and a think about seeds

Finding nothing in the cupboard for lunch I made these scones from the Bero Cookbook
150 g (6oz) SR Flour
pinch of salt
half a teaspoon of mustard powder
half a teaspoon of pepper
25g (1 oz) butter - or a tiny bit more
75g (3 oz) cheese
1 egg
2tbsp milk, or enough to mix
combine all the dry ingredients, rub in the butter, grate in the cheese, mix to a soft dough with the egg adding a little milk to make everything stick together.
Either roll out to an inch thick and use a cutter, or, as I did, divide into six parts.
Add a bit extra cheese on top, or brush with milk or egg, whatever you like.
Bake 200'C for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
Completely delicious!

Hi Kate, I just had to message you to say I think your fabulous, let me explain why - I’ve only just discovered your RU-vid channel or The RU-vid as you call it lol. Anyway I only just accidentally found your videos 2 days ago and Iv’e watched several already. You are so easy to watch and listen to, always entertaining and i learn something on each video even though they are so varied in content. The other thing is you make me laugh, we can never have too much laughter. Tonight I was watching the 10min scones, my hubby came in to ask what I was laughing about and who was I talking to lol, I was saying to you “you crack me up Kate” lol. I love the story about the last Homely House and I find when you are very pleased with something, so am I !!! I find myself smiling just like you, eg the Shibori dye day, that was so fun for me here at my home and I didn’t even do anything, this is how you effect people Kate but you have also given me the confidence to have a go at it, I’ve always wanted to, now I will. Also I agree your son is a wonderful boy, my boy is 34 but will always be “my boy”. As a matter of interest the first video I watched was the denim one, from jeans to jacket, even in that video where you stop to pat the cat, that would normally be boring video I found myself relaxing as you did with the cat. Thanks so much for what you do Kate, I’m really enjoying your company, how amazing what technology can bring to our lives 🤗

Gosh this made me miss my mom. She made scones for us as an after school snack, if she was home early from work. Wouldn't take her more than ten minutes, and we'd pop upstairs change our school clothes, wash our hands, and they'd be done. Strawberry jam and tea. Wonderful smells from the kitchen. Thank you for this.

dont know if your dad did things like this, but I learned to scarify my peas and beans before soaking.I lined a baking powder tin with coarse sandpaper--rough side facing the center of the can --and also the lid. Pop in the seeds give a good long shake, and the seeds get multitudes of tiny cuts that allow in extra moisture.

You crack me up! The look on your face when the flour flew, delightful & entertaining as usual. Often I think you should be on television, but then I think, she already is, being on youtube and all. And if you were really on television with a capital "T" then we'd have to share you with the rest of the world and right now it's so fun to have you all to ourselves, all four hundred and eighteen of us. But seriously, you could be a superstar "out there"; easily with your own cooking show. I'm so glad you are OUR superstar. Love you Kate!

lilyvillager it’s morning now, and I’m having breakfast. So a proper response. That was the sweetest comment! I am a bit of a buffoon - I used to teach - adults - I still do sometimes. We always have a blast and they learn stuff without realising it! I can’t wait to see your RU-vid channel - tag me here when it’s live. All the lovely people who comment here have at least as much to share as I do if not more! We all live really unique lives, as soon as I realised that I couldn’t care less what I looked like or how people received it it liberated me to have a go and now I’m having the best fun!! So go on You Tube Friend - point that camera at what you are doing and press ‘record’ it’s so very easy!!! 😊❤️🌿 Just a not, I’m no superstar. What would my super power be? Butter related obviously 😂😂😂

Good morning, Kate! It's morning here too. Ah, a teacher - no wonder you have such confidence. If you're a buffoon I'm a flowerpot. No, not really it was just the first word that popped into my head. Not sure what I am but maybe if I film myself it will become apparent! One thing I've noticed lately is that when I hear my recorded voice I absolutely cringe and yes I am going to be so self conscious about that voice, etc. Not much I can do to change it at this point unless I take some elocution lessons. Well perhaps we'll all have a good laugh. I'm a quilter (not lately), I take violin lessons, I have painted in watercolor, oil and acrylic, made ceramics and also worked as a ceramic painter, oh let me just stop there. I've tried just about everything but spinning and knitting. Oh and I've never had chickens. Well, can't spill all the beans now, must save up for my first "film" preview. The whole time I will be thinking about how you do it; you're my youtube goodwill ambassador. The name of my channel will be JauntyAirstream. Let's just leave that there, as a mystery for now.

So glad to see another person that says. Do not use margarine. I looked it up years ago and oh my goodness how bad this is for you. There is nothing nice about it. My mom and sis always complain when I say use butter. They still use the margarine. Horrible. Even when they bake a cake. 😨 Well those scones looked so yummy. I will have to give it a try as well. Just love good cheese and some bread. 😉

Hello Kate! Oh my, those scones looked absolutely delicious! Piping hot from the oven, had my mouth watering for one. Loved your grin when you added extra butter. : ) I only use butter also, you can't go wrong with that, and the flavor is better than anything else. I love to bake and it really makes a difference in flavor. You've had a wonderful gardening season, and now you get to plant some more, your crop bounty is amazing! Nothing like a good steady rain to soak the earth for a refreshing drink and wash everything anew. Love to smell the air after a good rain.... and it is always nice when mother nature helps us in the garden too! : ) It is amazing how after a good rain everything in the garden explodes with growth, so exciting to see. Say hello to my favorite goose Eileen, I am sure with the rain she and the chickens will find some relief from all the heat. Thanks for another fun and interesting video, I always look forward to all you share, and now that you and your daughter have put the world right, we can all relax and enjoy life as the world goes by. Have a great day!

Kate, I guess a little cool rain is better than none. Great idea teaching Eileen to walk to the lake, as she is so independent and probably prefers this to other methods. lol : ) I bet your garden will explode with growth with the rain and now heat.... you might need to start canning soon with your bounty! lol. Yes, summer is always better than winter.... it can be so dreary... I live in a place with lots of rain and grey skies, always look forward to warm sunny days with a breeze. It goes too fast! Would love video of you leading Eileen to have a nice swim in the lake... Love that Goose! : )

I made scones last night for the first time thanks to Kate! I had no idea it could be so easy, I thought it was more involved. Well let me tell you, I converted the recipe to work for my Keto diet. Let me also say, that watching Kate’s videos just makes me happy and makes me want to be more like Kate. I’m perhaps 80% there right now, I am 53 after all, but right now we are preparing to move from the east coast to the west coast. We are very excited, but getting it to happen is incredibly stressful and often depressing. So watching you Kate has been very therapeutic for me, and I mean that in the most clinical way imaginable! So back to scones...I used about 100g of almond flour, about 20 g of flax seed, and 30g coconut flour. I figured if I had the same amount of dry and wet ingredients I couldn’t mess it up too badly. Then I added a bit more baking powder since I wasn’t able to use ‘self rising’ flour, so I went in for 1 1/2 tsp baking powder. I used the same amount of butter, Kerry Gold always! I used heavy cream instead of milk (very keto), and Instead of mustard I put fresh rosemary in my scones, and of course salt and the pepper. I had the most wonderful meal for dinner last night as a result!!!!! Kate thanks so much for all the inspiration! Much love, Becky

We cook the same way, just go with the vibe of the recipe My husband the chemist cannot bear to watch! I have a Bero book such happy childhood memories of baking from there. Cheese scones are always yummy

it's a year and 2 months since you posted this and just to make sure you see my name in the comments if you read any from our past. I worked as a cake decorator in a bakery where I met my 2nd hubby. We later bought a bakery of our own and made scones every day. Cheese scones were a big seller. Your "recipe" is great! thank you!

the coriander (cilantro in western US) is a FABULOUS pollinator insect feeder. Many of the teeny tiny encarsia wasps which control aphids and soft bodied insects (by grisly, grisly means) FEED themselves on the pollen and nectar from Parsley, Cilantro, Dill, Carrot. etc. I let them go to seed just to feed pollinators, lol.

I'm going to make scones with crystallized ginger and honey. Your approach to baking is much like mine...I do read a recipe then I do my own thing and use what I have. I so enjoy your videos Kate, thank you.

You're right! Gardens are as beautiful as they are useful! Great to work in the garden, great to look at and delicious to eat--a great trifecta!

Your energy and enthusiasm are fantastic! The scones look delicious, and so glad to hear of the rain. My area of the states has been an oven since May, really. One happy note is the dill that I planted for the Monarchs is covered with inch long caterpillars.Yay! I heard England is having a butterfly count this summer, I hope the numbers will be up. BTW, your longer hair is very complimentary to you, good choice to let it grow out.

I've just nipped in from the garden .........I have to reply to this at once!!!!!! I have a hair appointment tomorrow!!!! So sorry ha ha ha ha ........ while Sadie is at the vet, I'll be at the hairdresser - that must be wrong yes?????????

Ha Ha...You'll look fine either way, I just noticed that longer hair gives you a "softer" look. Of course, however you like it is what's right for you. Blessings to Sadie for a quick recovery.

J B I can’t be bothered messing about with hair, so I just have a ‘wash and go’ cut. It’s bad timing that it’s the same day as Sadie. She’s at the vets now, I’m having a coffee before my chop!!! 🙁🤦‍♀️

Hi Kate, Thanks for reply. Glad u enjoyed South Africa. Made y'r scones - love it. Love the chatter About this and that. The drives. My sis lives in Hertfordshire, miss her. Went to Chelsea flower show twice - an amaizing experience. Trying my hand at gardening in sub tropical climate, not easy. Then Vervet monkeys come and eat all my garlic, onions, and tomatoes. Keep video's coming.

Excellent!! Love your reaction when the flour overshot the bowl and again when the bit of dough went flying to the floor. Priceless!! Rofl. I’ve never put an egg in biscuits or scones before but will give this a try. With the mustard and cheese, I’ll bit a whiff of garlic would be yummy! I’ll try it. Have a lovely day, Kate. You have just made mine - I laughed n laughed. So fun. Hugs ❤️

Thanks Carol - yes - the cheese was in the pack - I generally buy small quantities and eat it quite quickly - but I would like to make some beeswax covers - this year maybe if I harvest some honey xxxx

@@chrisberry7712 Alas, I have recently collected another bug - though it's not the 'rona, and isn't unpleasant, just stubborn! This is a giood reminder, I've forgotten about this recipe and now we're stuck at home again, good quick recipes are a lifesaver! :-)

Our local cafe serves cheese scones with butter and ploughman’s pickle. I’d never had that before but it’s tasty. The dogs prefer to have just butter and I’m inclined to agree with them. Thanks.

Once again you have managed to make me want to make something that I shouldn't eat. You do like your butter don't you. Evidently gardening is in the blood since you said your dad gardens, you and your daughter. You never said about the boys. Seems to me your weather is very similar to mine except we have flood watches because there has been so much rain and the summer your experiencing is what we have every summer. I can't believe your going to start sowing seeds again. I think I feel about quilting the way you feel about gardening, it's funny that most quilters garden. I have asked you several times about the quilt that went to the long arm quilter but you've not said if you have gotten it back yet or if you know when it will be back?? Have a lovely evening Kate and I hope all goes well with Sadie tomorrow and peace and harmony is restored!! xx Angela

Angela10226 ok, quilt first, it’s been a bit of a drama, but I got an email to say it’s done and I should be getting it back to bind this week. Fingers crossed. I’m new to full on gardening - like everything I do, I just have a go and am amazed when it actually works!!!my daughter is an excellent gardener, she worked in a commercial nursery for a while. My Dad can grow anything, but has eased off this year being 92 and all. The boys are interested, but one lives in a flat in central London and the other .... well he and his wife have just bought a house with a big garden, so I’m looking forward to helping them out with spare plants etc Sadie is at the vet now. Updates will follow, I promise. And butter ....... all the way! I might have to start a new channel all about butter!!!! (Not really. Though it would be delicious!) Take care Xxxxx

I just flatten a little with my hand, with a big knife cut into 2 X 3 inch pieces, rectangles. If they are not perfect I don't worry. Sometimes I put real bacon bits or minced ham in.
