Number 4 seems like the one I probably still do although I don't consider it a waste because there's always that thing especially in architectural representation where clients will ask for a virtual model or VR views or additional renders then the objects you put in your model become necessary. Good video!
Another good one. Your videos consistently find the right balance of detail and efficiency. Never excessive nor incomplete. And you devote the right amount of time to each one. Great for a "working" coffee break or (as now) on a Saturday morning when the part of my household that doesn't get up before 10:00am is still asleep. Been using SketchUp for a few months, and still didn't know about saving views. Worth a few minutes to get that tip!
Eyy Justin, you kind of saved my life during 2020, not to be overly dramatic, but seriously, man: THANKS ! I appreciate your "simplified" explanation of this SoftWare is quite inspiring. THANKS for that!
I learned how to use sketchup on my own, sure wished that I had seen these videos before designing 80 cabinets for our new home. Would of saved me days of work designing instead of being in the shop constructing cabinets. You do a great job explaining how to use program.
Hi am very new here and thank you so much for this tips, I really love it.. this will be noted because I am planning and learning more about sketch up.. and this is very useful for making a start up..
OMG you really make everything so easy! I have recommended you to my friend who is also studying interior design, and we love your work. Thank you sooooo much!
videos like this are grest! esp if u use other graphics programs ... and just need quick tips to readjust to instinctive or intuitive actions that vary from program to program. skech up is great for just that Sketch up... fast work .. and flexibility to export to more sophisticated or specialised software.
1. Not Grouping Geometry (0:56) 2. Clicking and Dragging (2:04) 3. Modeling Off-Axis (3:24) 4. Modeling things they don’t need (5:02) 5. Modeling both halves of symmetrical objects (6:07) 6. Not organizing their models (7:26) 7. Not saving camera views with scenes (8:29) 8. Not autosaving (9:23) 9. Improper Selection Tool Use (10:09) 10. Imprecise movement (11:11)
i've been using SU 2020 for 2 weeks now, and i've been barely made all those mistakes. I understand now why i was so frutrated moving things around, they are so damn sticky. thanks!!!
Justin, thank you for this tutorial. Out of the ten things you covered, I learned that I've been doing 2,3,5,9 & 10 wrong and driving myself NUTS!!! You have saved me hours of frustration. Thanks
Yea it annoys me how many people don't use group & components. So many of those trash youtube videos of "speed modelling" really set some REALLY BAD EXAMPLE to new users. Or when downloading stuff on 3DWarehouse, stuff are sticking together it's so annoying to fix or apply textures... [No.10 movement] - I will suggest use the [K] xray-lines trick. Often time you want to move something but stuff blocking your cursor you can't make reference, or just making a move that don't align to axis - Just press [K] key, now you can move the objects to whatever reference points or lines you may have precisely and very quickly. Tip: ALWAYS DRAW REFERENCES. No matter it's a simple line or use the tape & protractor tools. References allows moving complicated components around at pin-point accuracy. Here's one example: imgur.com/ACUhaOP
Oooh - that's a good one - I haven't even been doing that, but I can see how using the Xray lines for inferenceing could really help with moving objects around. Thanks!!!!!
I had a problem with the first one. I built an upper cabinet & when I tried to select it to make it all a group, I missed parts, included parts of the wall, etc. Any tips on how to make sure you get the whole thing without getting wall behind it? Sketchup freezes up/crashes whenever I use the Edit option in the menu (although I haven't tried right-clicking). I wish there was a keyboard shortcut to hide things. The arrow key to lock to axis points would have made my life so much easier when I was starting out. How do you make sure you're moving along a particular axis? Can you click an arrow on the keyboard to make it follow that axis?
i use your videos more than any other. my probem is that my default tray is covering the whole workspace. can you tell me how to restore it to the side of screen. Thank you
Again great video thanks. Question though- when selecting an object that you wish to move, How can you select the axis to move it on please? For example, often, I want to move along the blue axis 'up' but it refuses to do that as it seems 'locked' on another axis. Hope my question makes sense, cheers thanks.
Did you tap one of the arrow keys on your keyboard? Tapping arrow keys locks movement to an axis, so in this case, you could lock to the blue axis by tapping the "up" arrow key
I just started exploring this SketchUp thing... without any background of 3d designing and other drawing tools. your tutorial really helps... appreciate your time for doing this! Thanks!
10 Mistakes 1. Not Grouping 2. Click and Drag 3. not inferencing axes 4. Adding unnecessary shit that won't show in final view 5. Not modeling symmetrical objects by part/component 6. Not organizing into separate tags/layers 7. Not saving scenes (for presentation) 8. Not using autosave 9. Improper usage of 2 selection tools 10. Imprecise movement of objects (not using inferencing and anchor points)
It's more a note of how to move objects in general - it's much easier to move objects around along the axes, especially when there isn't a point to snap to. Getting in the habit of moving along axis lines whenever possible makes things much easier.
Probably too late now, but it would have been useful if you had referenced the version of SU that you're using. The software has changed many times over the years that unless a user is using the exact version you employ here it is impossible to follow your instructions. For example, in Nov. 2022 the free version does not look or function anything like whatever version you are using. Vendors arbitrarily modifying versions, adding or deleting functions, and deploying new graphic interfaces is a scourge.
Awesome video. I am new to sketchup and it's been very frustrating at first learning the program but then it clicked and I finally understood how it worked. But so much yet to learn. I am not a custom cabinet builder but use custom build companys to make my cabinets. However is there a list of cabinet making company's I can download from there products and what they actually make into sketchup? I can design whatever I want in this program but it's pointless if my suppliers dont make my designed style.. Please help? ?Thanks
I found a great tip for organising layers on the "VBO Sketchup Documentation Solutions" facebook page: facebook.com/groups/VBOsolutions/ first create a numbered layer i.e. per floor level of a building: 0_---------cellar-----, 1_----------ground floor-----, 2_---------second floor-----, etc... then group the objects per floor and assign them to layers named 0_foundation, 0_walls, 0_equipment, 0_furniture, 0_people, etc..., 1_foundation, 1_walls, 1_equipment, 1_furniture, 1_people, etc..., 2_foundation, 2_walls, 2_equipment, 2_furniture, 2_people, etc..., and so on now you can turn the visibility of all objects per floor on and off, just by clicking on the corresponding layer's visibility button if I have not explained clearly, please visit the "VBO Sketchup Documentation Solutions" facebook page and scroll down to september 24 2017 there is an example with a running video works like a whistle for me !!! VBO also have an amazing plugin for drawing pipes available for free in the extension wharehouse, complete with fittings check the 5 video's : extensions.sketchup.com/en/comment/87471#comment-87471
Another time waste is not setting up custom keystroke assignments and keeping them updated as you progress in not only expertise but also as your modeling requirements change with time.
Great tips! When I’m drawing a line of moving an object, I have been holding down the arrow keys for inference. So all I need to do is tap once? I’ve had problems with this all along... inference doesn’t stay locked.
Correct - I don't think there are really any tools in SketchUp where you hold down keys on your keyboard. Single clicks and single taps usually are the way to go...
#2 - I just learned yesterday after using SU for 5 years! Where was I when the video came out! #5 only sounds like a good idea - trust me - the moment you make it you will want to fix only one corner. Every time I get smart - I find out I wasn't.
I come back to Sketchup every now and then. Every time the same mistakes is made. Sticky geometry, forget to group and/or make component. Misaligning objects. Usually I get quite far with my model and then I start over doing it right the second time. I do love Sketchup because it is easy to use but you get punished hard for doing stupid mistakes. Love you videos. This one was right on the money.
10/10 😅 I'm trying to use sketch for a project now but I'm a beginner. I can't seem to put an opening on an exterior wall for my doors and windows. I'm not sure if the problem is that the wall and the windows/doors are not in the same plane. I'm usually seeing a magenta-colored axis, not RGB
thanks for the info. I am currently using sketchup free (web) and I have several times miss used some key (brushed my mouse pad) and found myself off somewhere and having lost my origin... at that point I try shrinking the model (rolling the mouse button) and sometimes I have found my way back. Is there a Back to origin key?
Hi Justin, I have Sketchup Pro 2023 - in the Default Tray i have Overlays but not Layers - am i missing something? I really want Layers so that i turn on/off different aspects of drawings for Client presentations.
THANK YOU! I've been trying to move a roof, and it just ended up sticking to the wall and all, now I know why! I need to group the geometry, THANK YOU!!!!
I would put: not looking into plug-ins as the last point. I know architects that have been modelling with SU for years and never even tried a single plug-in. And thats exactly how they teached us in university. We all accepted vanilla SU as the given thing and so a lot of us had soooo much unnecessary work that could have been solved in seconds with random rotation, mirror copy, cut to plane or even just the Solid Inspector.
Totally agree - I can't figure out why more people don't want to learn to use extensions - there's not a lot of focus placed on extensions in a lot of tutorials and it seems silly to me
"Sketchup guesses" yes, that is one of the biggest problems with sketchup. You can't give it the coordinates you want it to go to. The coordinates have to be hidden in the code somewhere, but you can't click on a point and find its coordinates, you can't go to a position, and the only place that has an identity is the origin. Guessing is enforced.
This is an odd comment to me, because it seems to be implying something that isn't true, which is that SketchUp models aren't accurate. First off, most of the time when modeling what's important is the location of objects relative to other objects (like lines making up walls at a certain depth, etc), which are 100% accurate in the 3D space, not the relative location in the 3D space. Second, you can get the coordinates of any point in the 3D space using the annotation tool. Third - I've very rarely seen anyone need to model using coordinates unless they're writing some kind of extension. "Guessing is enforced" is a very inaccurate statement
Is there an option to be able to use a photo and use it on sketch up, I want to take a pic of the front of my house and play around with different textures, colours and cladding.
