So is the conference where the defense attorney would ask for self defense? How do you affirm self defense? Asking from Nevada

For the most part, yes. If, throughout the trial, the defense lawyer feels that enough facts and evidence has been presented that would give rise to a self-defense argument, the jury charge conference is when the lawyer would specifically request and argue for the inclusion of that instruction to the jury. Asking for special instructions like that almost always leads to a fight.
