If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, SV Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. Hi! I find this kind of video fundamental for those who, like me, keep wondering about boat life. I prfectly agree with what you've just put. One thing that, for me at least, is somewhat complicated is food provisioning. How do you deal with it, calculate it. As Fabio mentioned at the end of the video: coffe! Can't imagine what to do if coffee ends in the middle of the Pacific. Which shore to swim? Americas or Asia, hahaha! Thanks for sharing your experience one more time, see you on the next! We are glad you find these videos valuable. Food provisioning can indeed be a challenge. We plan our supplies meticulously and stock up on essentials and until the freezer is full. Vegetables always run out no matter what. We have tried dehydrated veggies and they are OK but not great. Rice, pasta, bread and a whole lot of carbs. Plenty of olive oil, garlic onions potatoes tomato sauce. When the freezer food is gone, hopefully you catch some fish (we are the worst). We make yoghurt, bread, we are experimenting with sprouting. Dry beans at will! We try not to eat packaged food, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. As for coffee, running out in the middle of the Pacific is unacceptable!! Good video. Definitely getting to the true heart of sailing life. Like everybody I've watched hundreds of boat walk through videos. After three months on board I see boats completely differently. What's likely to chafe? Where are those reef lines running? I'm having the clew of my head sail reattached. When the clew on the main broke last spring I thought I shouldn't have used the electric winch. Now I went into the sail maker: Is is sun damage? Probably. Okay, replace the top and bottom loops as well. Driving home I thought, what happens when it breaks again? Why not a reefing cringle on my head sail? And I should take the main back in and replace the top and bottom loops and put in a cringle at the bottom of it too. I no longer think what if this breaks? I think what will I do when it breaks again? It's part of the fun.... Which is the real step one of boat life: Convincing yourself it's part of the fun.... So it will be.

I love y'all. Great top if you would have known. Can I say ya'll are looking so happy. Stress is gone. You two have some brass, well you know what. Rimes with walls. No back ground in wiring stuff but continue to learn how to do it all. Give yourself some credit. Must have been overwhelming. I have a back ground engineering so I can't imagine how you must feel. Great to see support from other RU-vidrs and sailors. Waiting on the Fabio cook book. I'm sure its in the works..LOL!

One fundamental thing people don't consider when buying a cat is carry capacity. For example an Outremer 45 is like 2.5 ton payload so once you add a long range cruising boats water, fuel and essential systems together you don't have much weight left for anything.

Cruising = endless boat repair in exotic, remote places, usually without support or access to parts. New boat, old boat, manufacturer, makes little difference. Something is always breaking. Resourcefulness and self sufficiency are key. Agree with your comment about so many successful cruising couples having at least one engineer on board! It is a tinkerer's dream. Unfortunately, I'm not an engineer.

Bringing along a technical library always comes in handy! Three or four how-to books on JUST THE ENGINE. Basic Plumbing, and one or two books written by a plumber who shares the knowledge on how to creatively get around problems, if you don't have all of the tools/supplies. At least two volumes on using a sextant and charts, and basic to charting your course without a computer. COOKING!!!! Fabio might be a great chef, but there are a lot of different ways to prepare fish/shellfish/turtle (if you're as "lucky" as I was, when I was ten, and accidentally hooked a sea turtle, and was ordered by Dad to immediately learn how to butcher, clean, render and cook the beastie) you've caught, or how to use the local produce. Basic and advanced fiberglass/carbon fiber work. Woodwork. Finishing. BASIC SEWING. The list really isn't all that long, but the skills picked up along the way will prepare you for anything and everything. You're looking so healthy and happy, and I am so glad that you're on this adventure, exploring and sharing everything with us. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing. Wished we’d been able to get together when we were in Gloucester. Now you’re half way around the world. I’m surprised you were able to travel with Yoda. I thought they frowned on bringing in animals in the Pacific islands. I can relate to the engine work and endless boat repairs. I do most of it because Dave works full time and I don’t want all his free time to be making repairs….❤

Im the do it yourselfer and always have been. Own 2 boats now for fishing. So yeah I know what boats stand for- Break Out Another Thousand. 😂 once i retire I hope and dream of the day of non stop exploring and continuing working on a boat. I live out in middle of a national forest so it takes about an hour to get to a store so you learn either to do without and you learn to stock up. There is no, i just gonna run to store as I ran out of something. 😂

Have you looked at (or seen anyone else) w/ one of the electric portable hookah systems? Like Brownie's Nomad? Thinking about getting something like that. Lighter than a full compressor, tanks, etc, and probably covers 90% of the dives we'd be doing.

Thank you Peter, we have thought about it. I'm really not sure, but for whatever reason, scuba tends to be the pick for most cruisers we run into. Could be the tradition, or maybe it's just the freedom to go deep and roam. Hookah kind of ties you to your own boat, so you'd miss out on diving with new friends unless you've got both kinds of gear. And whenever we reach a new place, we usually look for a local dive shop, which would mean renting equipment. So, hookah might seem simpler, but may not fit that "do-it-all" spirit a lot of cruisers seem to go for. So we joined the crowd 😂😂😂 Thanks for watching and for your interesting comment

Really enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing! You echoed a lot of our thoughts as well & we are incorporating 3.4kW of solar (glass panels not the flexible) and 29 kWh of lithium at 48V, plus the redundancy of Integrel chargers on each engine. All electric cooking, and having all the “extras” installed by the factory instead of doing it later. Stuff like fully redundant autopilot systems, multiple chart plotters, starlink, wired 110/220V to be universal for hooking up anywhere in the world, geez the list is endless…the only problem is how much all these great things cost 😂. Keep up the good work!

It is so good to get a refreshing outlook on what you find important about the boating lifestyle and also those things that you find not important or even what detracts from what they like about the lifestyle. Knowing what you know now, would you still go with gas + electric in the kitchen? Or would you just increase the solar and electric generation within the boat and just go all electric in the kitchen. I agree with the tools comment. I think I would like my boat manufacturer to build extra water tanks (in addition to the normal tankage) up in the bows - I would put these in the collision areas so that if you hit anything and looks like filling with water, it won't matter as it's already filled with water. I see quite a few catamarans porposing in larger seas and I can't help thinking that being able to put extra water up the front will help reduce this movement. You could always use this water first on sunny fine weather days where the ballast is not needed. Additionally, you can be filling those tanks when you know you're going to do your next sail, while still using/showering from the main tanks. I'd love to know what your thoughts on that are. Thanks for your thoughtful comment! The question about gas vs. electric in the kitchen is a great one. Knowing what we know now, there's a strong case for going all-electric, especially with advancements in solar and battery technology. That being said, having gas as a backup offers a level of redundancy that's comforting when you're out at sea and when you love to cook as much as Fabio does. We have an induction plate as well as propane. As for the extra water tanks in the bows, that's an innovative idea! We see the logic, especially for collision scenarios. It could indeed serve as a form of ballast to help stabilize the boat in larger seas. Typically catamaran manufacturers like to keep weight centrally located to avoid hobby horsing. It's also worth considering the complexity this would add to the plumbing system and the added maintenance. Thanks for watching and as always for your thoughtful comments! 😊

@@HarborsUnknown Thanks for the prompt reply. My small boat sailing has had me thinking of the issue of porposing for many many years. 150 litres in each bow would be 150kgs of weight keeping the nose from bucking up every time it hits a wave. Of course you wouldn't want water up there when sailing downwind with large waves behind you as you could too easily bury the nose - but what an excuse to go take a shower huh! "Quick Fabio, we need to drain the front tanks!" I'd install sturdy removable heat resistant bladders that could lay on the engines that you could bypass the water through to help warm it up a bit, with appropriate taps and valves to redirect flow when necessary. Of course all this comes at a cost and I think you are right, set things up when the boat is new. Ah the benefit of hindsight! Cheers.

That is definitely one of the great variables. The new SW 1600 will probably come with close to 3000 watts with panels over the davits plus walk on panels over the coach roof. Everything is a trade-off, one thing is certain the more power you make the more you use. Thanks for watching 😊😊😊

Thank you for sharing your experience, via this channel. I am enjoying your adventures, and the lessons you have learned. My dream Boat is a Seawind 1600 Passage-maker, and it was one of the reasons I started following you. There's not a lot of Seawind cruisers on You Tube. I must say that I'm a little dismayed to see all of the things that you have had so much trouble with, the autopilot ram, for example, and the cockpit fridge. Is this because you have such an early numbered hull, and now Seawind has a lot of this stuff all figured out? Or should I start dreaming about a different boat?

😂😂😂 you're asking the essential questions for sure! Fabio's coffee mug holds 709.764 milliliters to be exact! As for the coffee, we are not too picky, whatever we can get our hands on, Nescafé is last resort!! Not , running out of coffee!! Yoda? If she had a secret stash, she would not come to the rescue hoping to get rid of me (Fabio) and have her mom Kristin to herself. 😂😂🐾 As for your second question, a solar arch would be a fantastic addition for efficiency and additional solar panel placement. We are pondering the options but an arch is quite a bit of weight and windage on a light boat. We can now buy panels that are the same size then ours with almost twice the output. Regarding brands, sticking to one brand for storage and inverters would simplifies the system and troubleshooting. But our life about adaptability, so we would not rule out multiple brands out completely! Cheers to you and thanks for watching😊😊

Fascinating, given the last time you spoke about your personal experiences' with your newfound life. F doesn't seem to have moved much from his previous position and K is getting into her groove. If one partner is giving more to the other's dream and not satisfying their needs particlularly if their had originally been an imbalance in the relationship, then it will be only exacerbated and magnified on a boat. Couples either thrive together or they find their differences' pull them apart. Which unfortunately seems to be the case/show early sign's of in this self exploration. I truly hope my outward appreciation is wrong but sometimes these outward utterance's are a symptom of deeper problems'. What you have embarked upon will challenge you to your very essence in way's you could not have foreseen. In your case's I hope I am totally wrong. Fair wind's and following sea's.
