Over the last year I have been working on me and getting healthy so after losing a considerable amount of weight I had to clean out my closet. I took 8 bags of clothes over to the Salvation Army this morning. They were super appreciative and I felt so good that I was able to help others! :-)
+Diana Smith hey, congrats on the weight loss! I feel you since I did that twice: when I suddenly gained the extra 50 pounds (antidepressants) and then when I slowly lost 30 pounds (had to buy new clothes all over again=$$$).
thanks lovelettersandlace and good job Sevvy4ever on the weight loss too! My struggle is that I don't want ill fitting clothes, or a saggy butt in jeans (LOL) so I have been buying new clothes in all different sizes!
Hahah I'm not throwing it away! I'm giving it to one of my girl friends!! rails are my favorite flannels- I just had an extra one I've never worn before and I Know my friend will wear it!
+Alyssa G Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to learn about how to organize paper clutter try Skyarza Declutter Expert Star (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my co-worker got great success with it.
Love everything except the sentimental part...my mom & dad passes away and some of those clothes that my mom made or gave me will not be tossed. Disagree on that point. You can also take old sentimental peices ( like old tees w/ writing) as a DIY project and make a quilt or something else functional. You don't have to toss it just reuse it. Just my opinion.
+Debra Kimberly I think there's a difference between the type of clothing you're talking about and the type Carly's talking about. The ones you mention, I would DEFINITELY say keep - keep and share with your future children, those are timesakes (is that the right word?;;;). I have sweaters from when I was a little kid, and a cardigan from my grandpa, and while I don't ever wear them, I still keep them, but they're just in nearby storage so I know exactly where they are. I think true sentimental items shouldn't be tossed. The ones Carly mentions, from what I got, was the ones that are like, "well I got this 8 years ago from that friend but I don't even talk to her anymore but we did go to university together..." and they just sit there. No authentic, real sentiment attached. That's just my take though. :)
+Debra Kimberly I initially had the same reaction and then I remembered that I get a fair amount of use out of my sentimental clothes. I like your idea of repurposing them!
I still have the sweater I wore from when my boyfriend broke up with me. And at first I couldn't wear it, but GIRL I LOVE that sweater. It was a cute af sweater. And I was not allowing him to ruin that for me. So I took control of my life and began to wear it EVERY SINGLE DAY. I didn't care if I saw the same person over and over. I wore it every day for like, a good two and a half weeks until the thought of him was totally gone, and all I saw was that lovely sweater again. So in those cases, I don't think throwing them (immediately) is a good idea. If it was a gift from them, though... mmm... that's tough.
haha me too but when she says things that don't fit, i'm definitely keeping some oversized pieces, just getting rid of really tight stuff (keeping bodycon though haha).
+Norah AlWohaibi You should watch a video with tips on how to build an essential wardrobe. I know that helped me out and saved me so much money! I don't buy "trendy" items anymore and I don't let myself get sucked into the splurge.
There are so many pieces you're giving away that i remember when you bought and how excited you were about it. That made me kind of sad for a moment because we all change so much, but then I realized this video is about letting go of the past. Thank you, Carly. I hope this wasn't too creepy.
Instead of donating to a charity that sends it to a third-world country, try to sell or give them forward (or donate locally). Do not donate to charities that sends the clothes to countries like Kenya, East-Africa because they are right now overflowing with fabric waste and local businesses suffer.
Donate! Donate! DONATE!! For some thrifting is the only way they're able to dress "nicely"... not to mention it's just fun! Help those in need with the items you no longer wear, use or need (even that blouse with the hole someone can buy for cheap to fix or use the fabric of). ♥
Most of the closes described are not really "your closet" sure they take up space but if you don't wear them why keep them? If you do, and that is the main point I think of the whole video, then keep them by all means.
I used thredup, Poshmark and ebay when I have clothes that are like new (or at least in good condition) that I think I can sell. The rest I donate or give to friends. That way you're at least making some $ from items that you already planned to get rid of.
Wow, why are there so many negative comments?! Yes, she has a monochromatic wardrobe... It's very stylish, and it's HER PREROGATIVE. Also, just because someone makes a closet decluttering video does NOT mean they are rich. She seems to be well-off, but it's likely the result of hard work and being a boss lady. Being "organized" and "minimalist" are not wealthy qualities.... Everyone can benefit from decluttering and cleaning up. Sheeeesh

I agree with another commenter that this advice is for rich girls. I have all this old credit card debt to pay off (and my husband has thousands of dollars in child support to pay off) and she's talking about Louboutin Heels! Only rich ass people can afford items like those. Sorry, can't watch your videos right now; Bad for the self-esteem.

+Shawntele Lewis Thank you for agreeing :) Most people want to attack me for thinking this way but it's true. I sonetimes appreciate more the people who seem real and have real issues like debt and want to help people save money to pay off debt. I like having nice designer things too but I can't afford it right now. I have to sell my old clothes at a consignment shop in order to get new clothing. Or I have to wait until my b-day, Christmas, Mother's Day or Income Tax time to get new things, lol.
+lovelettersandlace Because I love fashion and I am saving up to open up my own clothing store but that won't be for a while. I have to pay off debt first. There are girls here on RU-vid who love fashion but are more budget conscious and realize that not everyone can afford it all the time. I don't always know what kind of girl is making the video until I watch it. Didn't you read my comment? I said I'm going to have to stop watching her videos so I won't feel so bad about not being able to afford certain designer things right now.
damn everyone here is so butt hurt! yes she has money! yes she has a shit ton of clothes! but me as someone who does not have a lot of cash, i have a ton of clothes because i hold on to clothes for a loong time. this video was helpful because it helped me weed out the stuff i shouldnt hold onto anymore! you dont have to be rich to learn how to clean out your damn closet!
I made my husband watch this because he keeps everything someone else bought him and old clothes because he may paint or go paint balling one day or....he is now playing your intro song on repeat dancing around our living room. Merry Christmas

Some ppl should stop complaining so much about RU-vid videos because they're just RU-vid videos. I'm not rich at all I'm on a super tight budget i have less than $50 a month after paying my bills I have never had expensive things but hey I like her videos and I enjoy watching them even though I can't even buy anything at all ppl need to stop w their negativity for real. If you don't like it don't watch it no one is forcing you
I live in Michigan. We have summer clothes and winter clothes. So I haven't touched them in a year. So unless I want to be naked in below 30, I probably shouldn't get rid of those.
You don't have to take it so literally lol she's just saying if you don't wear them often (meaning when its appropriate to wear that type of clothing and you aren't) you should get rid of it. Which isn't super impractical.
Clothing with rips and holes can be sewn up or up cycled. If you try up cycling it and you don't like it, then it's time to sell/donate it. If you have clothes with stains, keep the ones that aren't too bad and use them when you garden, craft, sleep, etc. or you could up cycle them too. For example, if you spilled paint on some jeans you'd still like to wear, you could distress them in the areas there's paint. Or recycle your old clothes by making a blanket like thing that you could use to protect surfaces when you craft or paint. Never throw away clothes unless they're shoes, underwear, or socks that are too ragged to reuse or donate.
Also, try not to buy clothes that are "in." You never know when that trend will end. Oh look that rhymed. If you do end up buying trendy pieces, try to find the ones you feel that you could wear on a daily basis. Personally, I don't believe in trends.
The "it'll come back into fashion" thing is so me. And the worst thing about that mindset is, when things come back into fashion, they're never quite EXACTLY the same as when they were last in fashion. Maybe last time those boyfriend jeans were in style dark wash was the go, then next time they're in fashion they're pale. It's rare things come back exactly the same. Same as things I hang onto "just in case" I've had this illfitting ugly coloured denim shirt in my wardrobe for years thinking I better hold onto it just in case I had some kind of ??denim themed party?? to go to, I finally got rid of it because I know full well that even in that rare circumstance, I'd probably just go and buy myself something for it that actually looks good anyway.
Yes I use to have pieces from when i was 14. omg. So glad i threw donated them all, they were just taking up so much space and I thought "They are still in good condition I'd wear them someday." That day never came lol!
I just purged my closet the other day (konmari method) and got rid of like 5 garbage bags worth of clothes and sold some to a consignment store. I think we are in a new age of minimalism with our belongings and I feel more proud of a organized closet vs. a closet full of tons of clothes that I don't wear. Also, this gives me freedom to buy new things here and there because I can see what I need.

Everyone needs to watch the documentaries on the cost (to the third world, to the earth) of producing cheap clothing. Fix things if you can, don't chuck them!
That last tip is def me I get really specific with why I need to keep something, alright I'm convinced (sobs to the RU-vid world) new closet new me yolo.
Hahah the fixed things! I have a pair of jeans that no lie I´ve been trying to get fixed for over a year! Sometimes I think that´s not going to happen, some other days I think I will. Its like a big resolutions for me for this year. Lets see if I can make that happen.

I've started a new exercise program that will get me into the shape that will fit my clothes from last year. I'm keeping my clothes that are too small in the guest room closet so they my main closet isn't cluttered and it doesn't depress me that I don't fit those clothes. When those clothes fit again it will be like I just bought a whole new wardrobe :)

When I stain something and just can't get the stain out I buy a bottle of Rit fabric dye in a darker color and voila!!! It's like having a brand new item. I dye things I'm tired of as weel 😃
Last year I threw out a whole bunch of clothes that had bad memories and everytime I tell someone about it they think I am crazy. Im glad someone elese had this too!
