I visit Tenganan in the jungles of east Bali to see just how the people of Bali's oldest village maintain their traditional way of life and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
Thanks so much. My driver & friend in Bali Jimmy Pago: WhatsApp +62 821 443 18786 suggested I go to Tenganen. It was a fascinating experience. I don't have contact details for Made' but if you go to Tenganen you will find him or another guide who'll be very happy to show you around.
lots of Indian influence can be found in Indonesia even today. The name Indonesia means "Indian islands". picture of Lord Ganesha, one of the most popular deity in India is inscribed on the 20,000 rupiah note of Indonesia. Indian currency also called Rupiah in Hindi. Indonesian Airlines is called Garuda which is an Indian deity. lots of ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples getting unearthed in Indonesia. Bali is an Indian name. Bali has 87% Hindu population. In past whole Indonesia was Hindu but now Hindus are left in Bali only.
It's a fascinating place and I'd love to know more about the origins of Hinduism in Bali. My understanding is the religion came with people who, like Made' said, arrived from Java. I'm guessing those people's ancestors came from the Palavan empire of Tamil Nadu who were great seafarers and were known to travel to south-east Asia to trade.
