Video log of a trip to another new (to me) section of Paint Creek in Allamakee County on Monday, February 5, 2024. This creek contains wild brown trout, as well as stocked and holdover rainbow trout.
The main objective for this outing was an on-the-water test of modifications made to my ESZ Rivermaster Z2 4.5 honryu rod. The changes included counterweighting the butt cap and extending the cork grip from its original, cylindrical 22 cm to its improved, hyotan gourd shaped 34 cm.
My friend Dre started with me but departed for other commitments after the first half-hour.

Great videos! I was able to get at some urban stocked Rainbows in Bondurant on Friday with my Shadowfire 365.

Nice mods! That's what that big rod needs. I look forward to your TA article. On my Rivermaster Z2 3.9 I left the handle the original length but turned it on a lathe into a more comfortable shape for my hand.

Thanks Tom. As a matter of fact, I'm referencing your original blog posts regarding MOI and RM as the jumping off point for the calculations I used to make my modifications. As is typical, you managed to blaze the original trail. 👍

Nice video! Have you ever tried Little Paint upstream for brook trout. The DNR claims there’s reproducing brooks upstream, but I have yet to catch one.

Thanks! I have fished Little Paint but only the downstream portions and perhaps a quarter-mile upstream from the top of the campground. I often think about the headwaters and share your interest in whether or not there are any brookies up there, It would sure be cool!

Gary, did you do those mods yourself? I am thinking of that rod but would prefer it in the configuration you are showing here

Hi Mike, I did the counterweighting myself but sought professional help for the grip modification. I'll have a good description in the article I'm drafting for TA.
