Although I love Federer above all players, I still think Wawrinka's backhand is slightly better and more powerful

Wawrinka's backhand is like Edberg's: great for hitting winning passing shots, but not consistent enough to be a great rally shot. In their head-to-head matches Gasquet could consistently engage Wawrinka, Federer or any other player with a one-handed backhand into longer rallies and almost always win them because he would not cough up an error after four or five shots.

He has more hip twist than federer, so the movement has more amplitude, more weight transfer to the ball. In his prime the way he could shoot on lines while being late on the ball was stunning

In Santa Barbara TENNIS in the 1970's their we're two teaching pros who taught two kinds of backhands. I learned them both. Mike Koury drew the racket back with both hands and kept the racket head level & away from the body before swinging. Harvey Bottleson drew the racket back with both hands in a high loop and kept the head close to the body before swinging. Either one worked very well. The two handed back hand worked the best on return of serve when the the ball was close to you. Move in with a half volley like swing and its devastatingly good. Johen McEnroe had the minimalist back hand stroke. A strong foot work and shoulder led smooth blocking stroke. Generally without a versatile ability to judge beteen these strokes in any given situation is the mark of a good tennis player and teaching pro. Watch Roger Federer and learn everything you need to know and practice. Federer, Sampras, McEnroe and Boris "Boom Boom" Becker are the serves that are the standards amoung many great and Classic Tennis players. Its amazing that these things are NOT the STANDARDS in the professional Tennis Teaching and PLAYING World.

Thanks for the upload. Although i played myself ITF and Sattelites 20 years ago, I still try to learn for my kids. what I recognized and only a few lokk at it how the one backhand players angle their wrist at point of contact. Very interesting to see and analyze.
@dbeaton1111
@dbeaton1111 4 года назад
I noticed that, too! The grip, the wrist angle, how far one extends the hand on the grip (fingers spread out or more ham-fisted) the angle of the body and how far in front one strikes the ball, how much one uses the hips for power (Gasquet is a prime example), if it's more of a swing through the ball with a forward finish, or if the arm swings up and around as if it as attached to the body -- all different and unique. Personally, I like Henin's and Wawrinka's backhand.
@ldeue4837
@ldeue4837 2 года назад
@@dbeaton1111 The shoulders also play a crucial role, you can replicate it even like the pros and your OHBH will improve....When you prepare you'll notice them leaning in on the front shoulder so it's lower than the back one, as they come forward and throw the hips and start to open these shoulders will switch and the front will become higher than the back it has that see-saw effect and helps you with upward trajectory. Knowing how your body is leaning is so important especially on shots like the slice, if you are on your heels your racket is probably 10-15 degrees more open than it is if you were leaning forward.

When 100% its superior to 2HBH in variety, deception, and versatility. BUT its very difficult to execute perfectly. At 80% its inferior to 2 hander which can muscle through a less than ideal strike. BTW what everyone calls a 2HBH is in fact a lefty FH with RH assist. The old school 2HBH was a true 2HBH - RH BH with LH assist ( Borg, Jarryd, Wilander, Connors, Solomon, Dibbs ). Evert started the LH FH with assist which was carried on by Austin, Jaeger, Sanchez and the Bolleteri boys - Agassi, Courier, Krickstein, Chang and also Ivanisovic. The clue is if the LH releases on follow thru , its a RHBH with LH assist. If it does not ( nowadays) its a Lefty FH with assist. The two are completely different in every way from power systems to timing and stances. I´ve played 25 years with each one.

@ashershelburne8379
@ashershelburne8379 2 года назад
It is not superior with versatility. A two handed backhand can comfortably take balls at all heights with minimal take back and also load up with power. Any player with a 1hbh has to resort to a slice 50% of the time due to a 1 hander not being feasible in all situations

Not really. At least I disagree. It's harder to get 2 hands up there than it is one. If you're taking it high, I think it's easier with one hand. I can rip a high one hander. Your mobility to get any power feels so limited with a high 2 handed bh. I had to learn to stop listening to conventional wisdom from a bunch of people that don't have a 1 handed backhand.
@RaphaClassic

My opinnion is 2 hander is better and more control. There are a more powerfull muscles in 2hander. Really you have 2 forehands. Im one back hander and proving two styles. I d like to be 2 hander. More power receiving strong spin balls from the oppnent.
