Tennis Return of Serve Lesson - 3 Tips To Transform Your Return.
The return of serve in tennis is the second most important shot in the game after the tennis serve itself. In singles you will start 50% of all the points you play with a return of serve, so it's vital that you master this element of your game.
Some of the common errors we see tennis players make on the return of serve are - they are not ready for the return and don't use a split step or mistime the split step.
They use too big of a backswing which causes them to hit the return of serve late and on side of their body.
They don't recover after the return itself and get caught out in a bad position on the court.
In this brand new video lesson Top Tennis Training coaches Simon Konov and Alex Slabinksy will help you improve your return of serve using three simple tennis tips.
The three tips are:
1. Use a well timed split step to allow yourself the best chance to move in any direction for the return of serve. Use the outer leg to load up in an open stance to then jump into the return.
2. Shorten the backswing on the return of serve so you are able to make contact with the tennis ball out in front of your body, think catch the ball instead of swing at the ball.
3. Recover into a good position on the court, ready for your opponents next strike of the ball. Using the correct footwork patterns will help you get back into position much quicker.

You guys are tnns dancers. Good stuff. I find it helps if I hold the follow-thru on the return of serve for an extra beat compared to a groundstroke. That way places even more emphasis on the footwork to get back in position for the next shot.

Excellent. I never noticed the open stand was needed to return properly, always tried to hit them closed stand (hence why I suck at first serves returns). Many thanks.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Hi Simon, I would be interested in seeing videos on the following areas: - strategies for when you are having a bad serving day - strategies for mental toughness and preparation between points - more competitive points either between you and Alex, yoan or other ATP pros (these are among my favourite videos). Getting the thoughts between points was great. - the federer squash shot/forehand on full stretch - how to slide into shots on clay - some stuff on how to chose a string (I would put this bottom of the list) Hope that was useful (I realise you guys have may have covered some of these topics already). Keep the great videos coming guys - this is the best online tennis instruction resource I have found! Kumaran

I found that the first part of the video about steps (1:14) was rather difficult to follow. If you added "0", "1" and "2" letters near Simon's legs, then I could have been easier to tell which leg or step Alex is talking about. As I understand it, when the ball is coming to the backhand side, the left leg makes the first "open stance" step (2:51), and that is followed by the much bigger second step by the right leg (3:02).

Well that would be the same for any element of the game, minus strategy which can be improved by simply understanding patterns of play. Everything else requires lots of practice.

That return is one of the hardest in the game, it's a shot you have to hit a little later to get the right direction. Lots of practice required but we have some doubles lessons coming soon so stay tuned.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I mostly play singles but similar to +Breath Saver's comment, in doubles too many of my returns are cut off at the net. That's where I need help. Another great video thanks.

You have to wait so I'd have 2nd serves pumped to you and work on hitting late and with racket face perpendicular to your target. I like to see the center strap as no no land, make sure you aim to the left. Small window, gotta relax and just hit it where you see space. If you have an active net man blast it at him if you're not sure which way to go. Or lob
@VictoriaFilmsgroup
@VictoriaFilmsgroup 5 лет назад
Thats because what they dont tell you is that the angle your racquet has with the ground should not be more than about 45 degrees because dont forget that as you re stading in an open stance your racquet tends to hit the ball higher thus has a bigger chance of going out. So you have have to control your racquet angle to compensante the fact that you re not standing in profile.

Can you please talk about how to track the ball when returning serve? Also how to time the swing properly... Finally, how to read the serve so one can prepare better.

How much of a unit turn do you do on return of first serve ? How much hip rotation occurs? I understand that the back swing is minimized. Also do you transfer weight forward into the ball?
@Perionian
@Perionian 3 года назад
Can you guys please also share tips on how to return slow and low serves? Not underarm serves, but overheard serves that draw you 1-2 metres in side the baseline. I find them hard to attack. But if I play them safe, I give my opponent an easy chance to attack me with his next shot due to my bad court position
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 года назад
I would either take that return on the rise and attack the weaker side or chip and charge. Treat those serves as a short ball, perfect for approaching with 👍 All the best Simon

What about the grip? Do you always grip with a forehand to start and change grip when you get a backhand or vice versa? I sometimes struggle to change grip in time (even with a medium fast serve) with an unforced error as a result ...
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 5 лет назад
Most pros start in the forehand grip and hold the top hand in the backhand grip (if double handed). This method allows you to change into a backhand grip using the top hand as the guide and if it comes to your forehand then you're already set. Thanks for watching. All the best Simon
