Tomo Fujita and James Calandrella perform the Sonny Rollins classic "Tenor Madness" at the Eminence Speaker booth during the 2014 Winter NAMM show in Anaheim California. Check out Tomo's walking bass line and chording work! Simply incredible. Tomo is playing his '92 Fender SRV signature Strat with Grinning Dog Funkmaster pickups, through his signature Two Rock head and a 2x12 loaded with EJ1250's.

Of course to most guitar players (and teachers:) on youtube anyone who can play more than just cowboy chords and pentatonic scale is unbelievable guitar masters. But the musicians in the video are quite high level and experienced. They would probably consider this a mediocre performance by their own standards.

Just my opinion, but I don't feel that the words unbelievable or incredible belong in the description of this video. Very competent musicians playing at a professional level, yes. But the performance, while good, was not exceptional.

Interesting how sight plays NO part in sax playing. Your vision is no help at all... I like how James, at one point, is playing those leading tones, almost bass lines, to fill out as the guitar goes roaming. Nice - wish jazz cats in real small groups would do that just a bit more when C instruments are soloing.

Hmm I find it pretty hard to read sheet music without my vision.

DiciestMikey I'm guessing you actually got my point, Right? Obviously, reading requires sight, but when people aren't playing from the printed page, guitarists, pianists, bassists, drummers, etc. have the option to benefit from looking at their instruments and hands. When you come from one of those instruments to the saxophone (and many other wind instruments and others) the difference is very apparent and relevant. Thanks for your time!

+Joseph Trahan In the very first statements in my post I said sight is no help at all, and didn't claim it would be. I also made no claims about rating 'talent' levels for various instruments. I started as a drummer and won a job as a chart-reading drummer and the youngest member of a big band comprised entirely of conservatory students, all of whom were at least three or four years older than me. Over a couple of decades I learned 4 instruments well enough to be paid enough to support a family, so I have some familiarity with difficulty levels, etc. Thanks for your input.

+Joel French could be two things; 1) you mind isn't open enough, 2) the sax player doesn't want to overpower the guitar thus the small dynamic range that he plays in.

@@joelfrenchmusicI know this was a while ago but James had an overly soft reed so if he pushed too hard the reed would probably have closed up on him

Same. He sounds like a funk player trying to play bebop. His articulations are too stiff and his tone is really funk-styled
