Jerry Hadley still has problems here, like a too open A vowel (which becomes constricted). Pavarotti never had problems like these with his vowels. To call those singers bandits is a little bit of a stretch. I do love Hadley though.

Jerry Hadley was very popular at Lyric Opera of Chicago and I was fortunate enough to hear him sing twice. Believe me, when Hadley was singing there was a full house of fans.

Very well sung in spite of extremely slow tempo by Bernstein.

In an interview Hadley told how the tempo was killing the singers. Bernstein told him to take more breaths and lump it. La Boheme was, Bernstein said, a "requiem for his youth."

Jerry Hadley has to be one of the most underappreciated tenors of his generation. He sings this beautifully, but he is not helped by Bernstein's sometimes too slow, sometimes too fast tempos.

Geez it brings tears to hear this, he died way too young. So lucky to have heard him in recital, what a gift and he was so passionate about American vocal repertoire on top of all his opera triumphs. Just one of the greats, RIP

WOW!! His phrasing was so sweet and that sound was nearly perfect for almost any role like this. He probably would've grown into the Chenier and other "dramatic" roles. His voice near the end was getting very robust without any loss of the pianissimo.

I had the opportunity to hear Jerry Hadly together with Thomas Hampson during a wonderful recital in Montreal back in the mid-90's. I was shocked to learn later of his tragic and untimely death. What an irreparable loss to the opera world!

He was lovely. I knew him slightly - he was a friend of a friend from when he taught at UConn, and he was just extraordinarily bright, kind, engaged, and funny. It makes it all the more tragic and incomprehensible, what happened to him, but he touched countless lives for the better. ❤

@@dmcg8400 I'd have to agree that this might have been a factor. I understand that his voice didn't age well, and I think he also had some other problems in his personal life. At least we have a few recordings of him in his prime.

What a brilliant rendition of this most famous of arias. I just discovered this great tenor today (only my apologies) and also hear his sensitivity and intelligence as an artist in his interview speaking about voice technique - what a great, great singer.

Jerry could unspool some of the most beautiful sounds out of that throat. He made singing appear effortless and such a pleasure to hear. His death was such a tragedy and loss to the music world, but more so for his family.

When I was in college in the late 70s, a Mezzo a year ahead of me went to the Met’s district auditions here in Virginia. She said that “A voice teacher from (Virginia) Tech won the auditions. I suspect that person was the great Jerry Hadley!

He has such a pure bright well defined sound throughout his range. Not a trace of heaviness or harshness. His diction/vowel sounds are all amazing. I heard him live once in St. Louis as Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte

Although Jerry had a truly wonderful talent I do think that, when singing Che gelida manina, just giving the occasional glance to the owner of said hand would add a certain je ne sais quoi to the performance.

The aria is beautifully sung but, like you, I did feel for Ms Reaux - she should have been given a table & chair and some sewing instead of having to stand on the sidelines looking emotional!

Every tenor has sung this aria at some time, but this must rank as one of the best renditions. Hadley is not equally good in other roles, but here here he compares favourably with Pavarotti and the best.

I only have LPs of Hadlee in My Fair Lady & South Pacific and one entry on CD - this very recording on a DGG compilation of The Worlds 40 Best Tenors. Dredging through You Tube for Jerry Hadlee is painful. Some 157 entries are listed but 75% are unavailable.

An almost incredible voice, with much passion and articulation. I reckon that along with Mario Lanza, he easily puts the current european elite to shame. They appear so soulless by comparison. Just an opinion of mine...

Both my two favourite tenors. Glad you compared. I myself don't mind the newer singers that much, but with respect to them, I don't quite feel chills listening to them, as I do to Lanza and Hadley.

Only God knows what terrible emotional loads people carry. Who knows what was going on my Jerry’s heart. No reason, no right to judge him nor anybody who commits suicide. May God forgive them for attempting against the gift of life He gave them but it’s so sad to continue wondering even now what could have been done to prevent that attempt of suicide. Such an amazing voice, such a young person full of promise and talent. So good to think there’s a video record rd of his greatness.

You shouldn't be as explicit regarding his cause of death. You don't do any good by that. I highly encourage you to highlight his multiple successes, instead of making his whole life about the tragic end of his career.

I will never understand why Mr. Hadley did not receive the admiration and respect. Placido Domingo, who could never breathe correctly and did not extend and open any high notes past the 1970s, got all the fame and fortune. For what? For attending all the chat shows in America in the 1980s? For seducing his donors? How many talented tenors did we ingore because of him? At least Pavarotti had a lovely voice and knew how to sing and breathe.

I'm glad that many commenters mention that the tempo is slow...A conductor can want a particular tempo..perhaps slow/slower than average, but isn't presenting the soloists you have in the best possible light part of being a good conductor?

Very slow tempo indeed. His voice is bright and gorgeous but there is a bit of a tiring decadence throughout the progression of the aria. Maybe faster tempo would have made it the perfect Che Gelida M. of all time.

@@Minimorum1, I agree. In the 1970's I had a several chances to see and listen Bulgarian Nikola Nikolov. He had one unfortunate performance at the MET and then disappeared. But I saw him in Europe and his Italian version of the Nessum dorma was on the same level with Mario del Monaco and Corelli.

This is operatic singing! Lyric with his beauty and good high notes. Compare guys his singing with careras 1973 live struggles before his ill.
