This video is amazing. It was just why I needed to understand what was causing that horrible ridging every second row like you show in the bottom half of the swatch. You are really on to something here and I suggest you do another video to update this one. It was well worth watching. 🙏

I'm glad it was helpful! I have a video talking about the bottom half of the swatch too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tE2U_2Wfv7w.html

Hi Heather. I really appreciated your explanation of why this happens. I’ve seen this in my ribbing swatches and now it’s clear that I need to plan for it at the beginning of the row instead of when I’m knitting back.

"Excess yarn gets pulled from the stitch before it" - What does that mean? Does it refer to the stitches just completed, or those on the row below? And why is there excess yarn in those stitches in the first place?

I'm referring to the stitches in the row below -- the ones you enter with the knitting needle to make the new stitches. There's not exactly excess yarn in those stitches, necessarily, when at rest -- but as you put your needle into the stitch to form a new stitch you stretch that old stitch very slightly (or by a lot depending on how you knit!) - and so as you work across the row the excess you are forming gets pulled from stitch to stitch. The very last stitch has no place for the excess to go, so it becomes enlarged. If you only put the tip of the needle into the old stitch when making the new one, this can help, and if you have good technique and exit the old stitch with the new one in the direction of the needle tip (minimize all pulling on the old stitches!) that can help too. I really should film a video showing some of this!
