IntenseAngler's "Tip Of The Week", Episode 22. How to use lightweight tent stakes to create a makeshift pot/pan cook stand for use with alcohol stoves or as a grill for cooking over a campfire. If you're anything like me then you probably forget a piece of gear or two on occasion. In this video I share a trick for utilizing your tent's stakes to create a makeshift pot stand in the event that yours is left behind or accidently destroyed. A few of the alcohol stoves currently being marketed are dependent on a separate stand or legs which can easily be damaged or lost... this method will save the day in such an instance. This method can also be used when lightweight backpacking to allow you to cook your meals without the need for a stove at all, whether an alcohol stove, a canister stove, or even a simple hobo type wood stove. All you need is a few cheap lightweight stakes and you're good to go!

Great tip John. I noticed that little piece of foil near your foot. If I'm not mistaken it was a pull off lid from a can. I save those also for heat bases, small wind screens and most of all a ready made and flexible lid for a pot or cup etc. They are so light and come in many sizes. Great recycling. Jim

I found this trick from a now defunct blog back in '02. He was using an aluminum pie plate (just eat a pie!) and the three pegs to make a twig stove. You pierce the pegs through the plate and just keep using the same holes. My gf and I used this trick for a 2 month long hike through Quebec. It worked superbly. If it started to rain we just collected some twigs and put them under our pack rain covers. If we got sogged out we'd use a bit of hand sanitizer to start the fire. You can put rocks under the plate to raise it up, once you have some coals. Once the pegs cool down you can use them for your shelter, making your stove weigh a pie plate, essentially nothing. I sewed up a silk drawstring bag for the sooty plate, pegs, and cook pot. A wider pot works best but we also used a billycan and that was just fine. We never bothered with an aluminum foil windbreak. The sides of the plate blocked the wind enough. If you leave a fire going for a long time you might eventually melt your pegs, but that only happened once on a different trip, not using the pie plate and having too big of a fire going for too long. Melty! With this method you can boil a liter of water for a good length of time with a handful of twigs. When you're done make sure the coals are all cold, tilt over a rock and dump the ashes there. There is no scorch on the ground and the ashes are poof gone. Leave no trace, perfect the guerrilla camping we were doing.

John, I just ordered a few extra stakes as a way of making an improvised twig stove exactly as you have here. I was convinced I was a genius, but the idea that I didn't see this tip from years ago is ZERO! Oh, well, still think it's a great idea! LOL!

As a cadet, I use to stick 3 or 4 tent pegs in the ground as a pot stand, fold up a bit of tin foil about 3 times as a base for the solid fuel tab. Worked really well.

I got this tip from i believe AlfieAesthetics here on YT. one of his random videos had him using tent stakes as a pot holder. so that's what I do. 4-5 tent stakes and a 9in tall windscreen is all I use. cheap and saves $$ on those little Emberlit type stoves.
@wdhish
@wdhish 12 лет назад
I would recommend the NOLS book COOKERY before the methods in the video. I personally just use a very small wood fire and surround with rocks to support my pans. The tent stake just seem like a hassle to arrange and something else to carry. The main problem with alcohol stoves is they will not lite when it is really cold.

John, Brother you need to watch using river rock for a fire pit. They have a very bad habit of exploding when they get hot. Just sayin'. Brother you know I love all your video's just don't want you to put an eye out or somethin'. Keep up the great video's!!!

very smart, you could also utilize your ten stake as a grill rack. just set you up two logs, dig a little hole, lay your tint stakes across, and start a fire. nice and easy grill, john also sub to my channel. take care
