If I had to rely on just one tent to cover 99% of my camping trips, which one would I choose? In this video I discuss what tent works for me for camping in the rain, camping in the snow, solo camping and camping with my dog. Oh, and camping with my wife. And which one is the best of all worlds. Plus which ones are the best backpacking tents.

Well I was considering buying the 1 man version of the Hubba Hubba NX and you just made up my mind for me. Thank you for actually giving an opinion and the pros and cons to each tent. So many people are afraid to say they dislike something and why, which makes it impossible to understand or even value someones opinion. Thanks for the great advice!!

Lol Tony. A tent is a tent is a tent to Brucie. He just wants to do bundu bashing (bundu is bush in South Africa). He wants to turn branches into kindle wood for your fire, and sit by the log near the river watching the pixies. Your Brucie is happiest in the rain 🌧 and the tent ⛺ is, well, a kennel to sleep in. Really think your videos are cool and...enjoy the tarps and tents.

The Hilleberg Staika is a generation old now. It is 4kg, yes overweight. For a better choice you'd get the Hilleberg Allak2 at 3.3kg, or even the excellent and sturdy Nallo 2GT with a weight of 2.8kg. Cost me $A1200. FAR better than any MSR POS. "Hilleberg Staika - I have used it *only once* ". Hardly great grounds for an expert judgement.... OMG! I have had my Nallo 2GT for a short time, just 18 months during our COVID lockdowns. However I have used it for at least 20 nights, including strong winds, some heavy rain, one very hot night, and a few cool nights. I still consider myself only moderately experienced with it.

I think, there is one very important point. And it's about pitching in bad weather. Yes, the MSR can take all the rain and everything, but one thing is missing. There's no way you will be able to pitch it in heavy rain (and wind) without making it turn into a swimming pool. I have a friend who almost died because of this. It's a great tent, popular for a reason, but just not the best choice for some areas / conditions. In my home country my choice would be the MSR because the weather is predictable and mostly nice. But in the country where I live, it's important to have a tent that can be pitched with the outer first.
@cloudwind23

It's possible to pitch the outer first when you use the msr footprint.

Great breakdown. I'm not going to lie, I thought you were going with the Hilleberg as your one tent to rule them all. Your reasonings were sound and I have to agree. I think one of the main problems is the "cost per night" The more you use it the less the cost. For most people, who aren't staying on the side of mountains, the Hilleberg just isn't cost effective. Awesome but not cost effective. You were right about pitting your money into a better pad and sleeping bag. Thanks Nate

You could buy the Hilleberg (preferably the Nallo 2GT or Allak2), use it for 5-6 years and as long as you have looked after it, sell it for about what you bought it for. These tents have great resale value, for very good reasons.

Interesting - I can relate to the conclusion IF MSR has seriously improved the Hubba Hubba and if you're mostly going alone. We have a Hubba Hubba (not even NX), and it hasn't really failed us in the conditions we had, but it sucked in most of them other than just good weather camping. It can't be properly staked out (not enough lines), it sags when wet, the interior is about 10% smaller than MSR claims, it created condensation like crazy with two people insight and wet conditations (Grand Canyon hike), you can't set it up in the rain without the inner getting wet, it's not great in cold and windy conditions because the wind goes in underneath the fly and it gets REALLY cold. We also have a Hilleberg Keron 3, which has NEVER failed us or has ever made us even swear. Sure, sometimes we weren't happy with size and weight, but for two people it's manageable to carry around and I'm happily saving weight in other areas to not deal with all the issues we have with our now about 12 year old MSR Hubba Hubba. The other thing is: the Keron is now 14 years old and in perfect shape. The MSR is flaking off the coating on the fly, the inner tent is damaged in many areas, and we have replaced the pole system one and repaired another time. No such things in the Keron. The price pays off over time ... in comfort and longevity. I loved the weight of the MSR, but about 2/3 of the nights spent in it weren't great. We are going to replace it with a Hilleberg soon. Probably an Allak 2.

Great video. I recently went for the Hilleberg Allak 2. (Red) Felt it was a good compromise and could handle most conditions. Looking forward to using it on the hills this winter. Had it out a few times in moderate conditions.

As a Brit am used to the sound of rain and find your videos relaxing knowing I am not getting wet! If you ever asked me to go camping with you I would share your food, but I have had my fill of camping in wet weather and somehow it always rains when ever you go out! I am 76 and 6ft 3ins tall and now have to contort my body to get in and out of single person tents. I like using a camp bed or 'cot' and the Stika with the inner removed in Summer allows complete orientation of the cot. You can fit a camp bed inside the inner of a Hubba Hubba NX2 that I bought on your advice, you can always put a waterproof bag over the foot end of your sleeping bag in case it touches the inner/fly. Thanks.

Good review on the tents. I have nothing against tents , I have several of them. They are great when the occasion calls for them. Apparently I march to a different drummer by hammock camping. I prefer the hammocks 360 degree ventilation here in Florida where tents can become sweat lodges.

I have Hilleberg Staika and Anjan 2. Go with Staika for motorcycle touring and kayaking if you can afford it. I bought it second hand and I'll tell you it will be difficult to find better tent for motorcycle touring and kayaking, it's what I do a lot. easy fast self standing setup, outer pitch first, can do outer only, inner only (with optional accessory), durability of materials, reliability in all weathers, take snow load if choose to winter camp, space with 2 vestibules, will do summer, good ventilation. don't be fooled by weight. Yes heavy and not for multi day hikes, but if you want to take it on 1-2 day hike camping I believe it is manageable. We are strong men and an extra 2.3 kg will be fine for a reasonable walk. yes climbing up to steep mountains will be difficult with extra weight. the question I'm interested is how long it takes most people to carry their tents to campsite? Going on multiday bicycle trip I would choose MSR nx2 because it packs SMALLER but as I haven't got one I will take STAIKA, it's one, do it all tent I need. If your hobby is and you mostly do hike up to camp spot I would never go with STAIKA - too heavy for that. Because I mainly do motorcycle touring and kayaking it's a perfect tent for me. I haven't tried MSR but I know it will not suit me for 2 reasons. first STAIKA has outer (with inner) pitch first. so if it's pouring down rain and especially if it's also dark this setup way suits me very well. You don't want to be in heavy rain or rain+dark combination with inner pitch first tent. Secondly on kayaking trips camping next to river you will get lot of condensation, also in STAIKA. On many mornings in autumn I would undo inner tent (takes 1 minute) and pack it dry separately. then I would wipe off condensation from inside of outer tent (in my case it would be a lot), wipe the outside and pack outer tent separately. When pitching tent again you'll always guaranteed to have dry inner what you attach after pitching outer tent.

Nice review and reasoning. Recently bought the hubba hubba nx2 as I believe its a good compromise for me. At most with wife and 1 semi big and one small dog maybe a little tiny but for those cases I also bought the gear shed (700g). But if its a sunny summer I don't have to use it. Dogs can sleep outside ;-)

Thanks for your views. It really depends where you are going like you said for multi day hike you may compromise robustness to save weight, but at same time you don't want to blow away in the night. 4 kg for Hillderberg though is a lot to carry up a mountain when there are lighter options

Really tempted by the Hubba Hubba NX but I'm hard pressed to want to spend the extra money on it when the Elixir 2 has bigger vestibules, more livable space and is generally more reliable and durable. Although, the pack size is the concern, the Hubba Hubba NX looks like it'll fit nicely into my bag but the Elixir 2 looks absolutely huge and I just don't know...

I really enjoyed this video (as always!), and your sound logic on each tent. 👍🏿😊🏕️ Last year I bought the Illumina X from Nova Pro Sports, and I am delighted with it for my first hiking tent. I have a couple of car camping tents as well. 😊 The illumina is only 1.5kg max weight, and four seasons, so ideal for NZ conditions. I am tossing up what I want to take on Te Araroa with me when I attempt that next year, so I'm always looking at the tents on offer from the various companies.

Sorry to say so, but I cannot even have my sleeping bag inside this tent, not to mention the really warm sleeping bag. To call it a two person tent is a very optimistic statement, but so does nearly every other company ;) One would need a Motha Hubba NX III for two persons plus gear. Then comes extra guy lines, stakes and snow stakes or what ever one uses. In Scandinavia, wooden painting mix sticks with a hole in in for a guy line, are widely used in snowy conditions. Light too. Use then up/down, or as a dead mans anchor. There was a brit guy showing his Hubba Hubba NX2 to be reinforced with a trekking pole on the inside in strong winds. seemed to work well up to a level. I would sew on a bit of reinforcements and install eyes for a few extra guy lines, so it doesn't flap so much in heavy winds, which can lead to water ingress. I wouldn't take it on a mountain top or in serious cold, but for normal camping/hiking in relatively good weather, it's nice. Thanks for sharing.

Have an old MSR Hubba 1p tent. Holds up quite well. The low side walls do not protect from cold windy nights. The "new" NX series (Hubba and Hubba Hubba) solved that problem with higher side walls. If I trashed the Hubba I would replace it with the Hubba Hubba NX in a heart beat. 3/4 pound heavier but it would be a palace. Would be wonderful for rainy days.

Some great tents there. Am considering every option but so far I’m leaning towards the Rab Latok mountain 2 or the Rab summit as a 4 season. They seem extremely quick and easy to setup and are free standing. Latok mountain is around 1.9kg and the summit 1.5 but it’s low at 80cm but it’s designed to be bombproof in storms on 8000m peaks so it’s more about basic survival and minimal space. The mountain is pretty much sold out worldwide at the moment so will have to wait.. may get both. Of the tents you showed I’d choose the Hubba Hubba which also looks like a great option for me. Thanks for your review, always great to hear from people’s experience..

What about the Allak or Rogen. Rogen out performs MSR Hubba Hubba as a 3 season tent and stronger with barely a weight cost. Allak is 4 season and always felt safe even in big storms in the North of Sweden plus 3kg. Don't get me wrong I agree with pretty much all you said and used the Hubba Hubba, Mutha Hubba and Hubba other MSR tents too and design and weight hard to beat. I could never see myself using the Hubba Hubba in the Swedish mountains apart from Summer. For most of your below Alpine the Hubba Hubba is a gem. Course MSR has the Remote and Pro Guide tents and they are higher priced the Hilleberg Stalka

I am very much in doubt. I want a tent that is 3,5 seasons (knowing that a hardcore winter tent is different). I have the choice between “Hubba Hubba NX” and “Telos TR2 Plus”. I like them both, but Telos plus has a 8.000mm water column pressure on its bottom laver compared to Hubba Hubbas 3.000mm. Also, it seems that the inner tent on Hubba Hubba has more mesh net than Telos, which I guess is a bad thing in winter conditions?? 🥶 ❄️

This tent positively checks off every box for all round excellent performance. I've already used it in sub freezing snowing & torrential rainy/high wind storms without issue. It is the perfect size & weight. I am planning an AT section hike soon with this tent during a rainy/stormy season. Rather than the Staika, got the Tarra, tons of vestibule space and inner living area with vertical walls. The weight never bothered me as all weight does is slow you down, but not in a hurry. My other tents include an Akto, nallo , nammatj , Anjan , Soulo. Your Stiaki is not 100% waterproof, it will let rain in via the zip under the vent in high winds like other hilleberg tents with roof vents, you will need to seam seal it. The Staiki will suffer badly from condesation if no wind, even my 3 season anjan flysheet will be soaking if no wind if your sleeping bag touches the end, just put your rainjacket over the end of your sleeping bag IF I had to choose 1 tent, would be the Soulo, a 1 person version of the Staika, totally bombproof

Excellent information. MSR Hubba Hubba NX2. Your camping activities are far more harsh than anything I would do. I just need something I can carry on my motorcycle, with a vestibule for my gear ( stinky riding gear never goes in the tent where you sleep), and no need for an extra tarp for bad weather. If it's good enough for you, should be even more than I would ever need. Which is good security. Thanks.

MSR won’t stand up in the snow fall or high wind situations. It’s a 3 season tent. It’s not an ultra lite backpacking tent. It is a good tent though which I replaced with a red label Unna. Now the snow and high winds aren’t a problem. Different environments. You get what you pay for in durability too. Good comments though and shouldn’t be compared against each other because they are so different in my opinion. Wow on your sub numbers! Good for you Tony.

I’m going to pull out the tent that was my dads tent from my mums garage. I’ll only be able to camp in the garden. The tent must be nearly 50 years old now. But I’m desperate to camp in the rain.

Just took my new 3f UL Floating cloud 2 out for it's first test - few heavy showers, wet gear and a very wet dog. Dripping condensation and sleeping bag touching the ends. Now back searching for a better option. Hilleberg Rogan looks great, but that $2k price tag does seem high. Curious about your condensation experience in the MSR - when it's a very similar geometry as the Floating Cloud?

I love the idea of the MSR Hubba Hubba but I'm not so sure my 208cm body would comfortably fit inside, seriously considering the Hilleberg Kaitum 2 (3.0kgs), great video by the way, surprised you don't have 100k+ subs, very informative channel.

Same issue.. at 203cm most I just don't fit in. I went for the Lightwave S22 Sigma.. 4 seasons, 1.7 kg, and I can fit in it:)
@Hightower600
@Hightower600 3 года назад
@@andycampbell5981 I had also looked at the Exped Vela 1 Extreme (2kg) with its 245cm long floor, 4 season, large vestibule and innovative flysheet (no zips) but not sure I would fit given the sloping walls. Lightheart Gear (USA) also make a tent for us tall guys which is superlight (around 1kg) which i would also be interested in. I'll have to look at what you went for also. Always a challenge to decide upon weight over room and where the larger tents can be pitched.

@@ABCampingTony I recently got myself a DD Superlight XL tarp & Hammock which after watching some of your other videos have inspired me to get out and enjoy. Definitely therapy for the soul, thank you for putting so much time and effort into making these videos, can you do me a favour and give Bruce a few pets, he is adorable. 🤗

The red label Hilleberg would’ve been the better comparison to the Huba Huba, the black label is the heaviest

Not sure which currency you are referring to, but the 'Staika' is currently $1150. U.S. on the Hilleberg website. Nice gear review otherwise.

What the heck...it isn't raining....I prefer a tent that that is free standing and the fly can be left attached so when the poles are inserted the interior of the tent stays dry. Vango make good 4 season tents for hiking.
