aang also had the trauma that he abandoned his people and let it die. When he got a sun that was a airbender, he saw as a opportunity to restore the culture that he losted. but in the processes, he ended up passing this guilt to tenzin.

The subtle differences between Omni Man and Tenzins voices make the same voice actor near indistinguishable despite such a destinguished voice

Yeah tenzin has a lot more stoicism in his tone, Omni man you can definitely sense a more angry/manipulative tone. Took me a second to remember that j.k. Simmons was tenzin

Loved this video! I especially find Tenzin’s situation interesting because he’s dealing with the pressure of parental expectation from a parent who has passed away. We aren’t made aware how much (if any) pressure Aang put on him. I think even if he was mostly relaxed, Tenzin would feel this pressure anyways by virtue of being the Avatar and the last airbender’s son who can carry out the air nation legacy. I relate a lot to Tenzin BECAUSE his father is passed on and he feels this way. My parents are both alive and wonderful people who love me dearly. But like I think Tenzin often does, I know I have inflicted pressure onto *myself* because of who my parents are. My mom is a bombshell who graduated at the top of her class, managed two jobs and drill team in high school, was popular according to her classmates (she disagrees however), and while not going to college she thrived and was very successful in the work force after graduation. As a girl who was told I was a gifted child academically but later struggled in school, I felt like my mom held internal disappointment towards me. I looked up to her as a woman and she was the benchmark in my head for what a successful woman should be. I tried really hard and wrecked my mental health as I got older with pushing myself too much to keep perfect grades academically. To be the same kind of student my mom was. But amidst feeling this way, I had a mom (and dad lol) who celebrated every time I got better at a subject I struggled in. Who celebrated with me when I passed a test, even by the skin of my teeth. Who told me my worth wasn’t tied to my grades or how many AP classes, so long as I did my absolute best. Therapy, talking to my mom, and therapy with my mom has really helped with my self inflicted feelings of shame and fear of being a failure in the eyes of the amazing people who raised me. And graduating high school was an amazing accomplishment that I got to feel proud of myself for when the day finally came! And we all celebrated the hard work I’d put in to graduating, even if it wasn’t at the top of my class :,) (I was blessed to have graduated as a “student portraying academic excellency” however!).

You say that Tenzen's outburst when he loses his patience with Korra during training reflects Aang's personality, but it feels more Katara. Like Katara and Toph's spat when Azula was stalking the gaang

I’m pretty sure the spontaneous Airbenders on Season 3 is their workaround to avoid the notion of Aang or Tenzin thrusting their way around the the world.

Dude, that image... But seriously, the other explanation is that, there were survivors, they probably were in hiding and they had descendants. Which turned out to be those airbenders during harmonic convergence

I have to view it as a separate universe from ATLA because i don’t like some of the decisions made like Korea being cut off from the past lives and Aang growing up to pressure his children so much that they feel so stuck. I understand why the choices were made storytelling wise but to protect my piece, separate universe. I do like it even it with my disagreements tho.

I looked at the dates, and Jinora wasn't born until 7 years after Aang's death (meaning Tenzin spent 7 years as the last airbender). I wonder how long it took for Tenzin to break things off with Lin after Aang died.
@RasmusVJS

I personally feel like they could have done a slightly better job at informing the audience of how "bad" of parents Aang and Katara were, like maybe showing a couple of flashbacks or getting an opinion from someone who wasn't raised by them. Because, at times, they felt like worse parents than they should be, given their characterization in the show. But overall it was a narrative hook that I liked from the show.

The thing about Aang his patiënts isn't because of his personality like it is in Korra. With Aang it's more because he is 12. I am a really patiënt person but as a child I also could be inpatient. That's normal for children.

This kinda hurts. From a young age my dad kinda did this (consciously or unconsciously). I was his only son that was biologically his (the rest being either fosters, adoptees, or under his guardianship), and I was the youngest kid overall. They had me at a late stage in life, and it was clear I’d be the last. He always said I was going to be better than the rest (my siblings) and that I don’t [can’t] do things the others did. One of my sisters (the oldest kid) was already an adult by the time I was a toddler, and my next oldest sibling sometimes had identity issues from being adopted. My brother (under guardianship) hated being there, and refused to be adopted, because his parents had died when he was young. Add onto that, that with my dad’s job, even though he wasn’t famous, we were very open to scrutiny from our own community. He really went out of his way to mold me in his image, and, in certain ways that’s not bad, and I don’t resent him for it, but when I actually discovered myself, and it wasn’t his mirror, it felt like I had to put more time and effort into accepting that that was actually who I was Sorry for the word spaghetti

I’m not a big LOK fan but I do respect its writing for Aang’s children. They are almost perfect in how relatable and well characterized they are. Really showing a side of parents not as common. That even if they are good people or even by normal standards good parents (ie not treating them like shit in the traditional ways like physical, emotional, and verbal abuse, they aren’t the best. And that’s realistic cause sometimes people who are most skilled aren’t good at raising kids or having their own. And it’s important to show how they feel and how they grew due to it.

I think for Tenzin, he internalized that the air nation was on his shoulders like it was on Aang's. I think there wasn't ever any question for him to have children, he just knew he needed to and to raise them as air nomads.

My mom isn't famous by any means, but she's deeply loved by her community, and for good reason! But for most of my life, it felt like people couldn't see me as an individual. I was just my mom's daughter. I realize now that it was my brain being a jerk and I was comparing myself to her. But it's still incredibly frustrating when so many people can't have a conversation with me, without bringing up my mom in some way. Being a gifted kid definitely didn’t help. I've wasted so much of my life feeling guilty for not meeting my standards. Feeling like a failure and so far behind my peers, due to circumstances beyond my control. But I'm finally at a place now where I can forgive myself and move on with my life. Sure, I can't do some things, but that doesn't mean I can't do anything! Just because it's hard doesn't mean it isn't worth it. And yes, you're never too old to learn! As long as you're alive and you're willing to do the work, you can accomplish a lot!

Great video but I was hoping you'd talk about what I think was a very important but kinda brushed aside point in Tenzin's backstory. He was dating Lin, his childhood friend who he was happy with but she didn't want kids and he needed them for his duty. The man pushed aside the woman he had grown up loving for his duty to the Air Bender Nation.

I think of Tenzin as more of a royal heir than gifted child. He needs to do X and Y, he's apparently the one Aang spent more time with because Tenzin will become the last air bender when Aang dies.

I think this video actually does a very poor job of exploring how Tenzin does feel a connection with air nomad lifestyles, and philosophies. Everything is chalked up to his relationship with his father rather than any actual connection with the air nation. Why would it only be out of obligation to Ang to keep the air nomads going? The air acolytes exist because the people of that world found the teachings and lifestyle worthwhile and their genocide threw the world out of balance.. The topic is such a good idea, but too much of his character is attributed to it.

Except him being an airbender is the root of his idolization of Aang.
@PosiTVty.
@PosiTVty. 2 дня назад
This is a totally valid criticism! I think a lot of it can be attributed to his relationship with his father, but it certainly isn’t *all* he is. After all, that’s what he learned in Book 2: he’s his own man- and as his own man, he finds the values and culture or the air nomads fulfilling. You make an excellent point!
@sparxstreak02
@sparxstreak02 6 часов назад
5:50 I think Tenzin felt less pressure to ‘repopulate’ the Air Nomad Nation once new airbenders started popping up in Book 3 as they no longer had to rely on the passing of genetics in order for someone to be born an airbender. Plus, by the time Book 4 rolls around, Rohan is 4 & isn’t shown airbending at all, so it’s implied Pema’s wish for a non-bender child came true - not to mention there’s a 5 year difference between Rohan & his older brother Meelo, so Rohan may have been a surprise baby & Pema’s 39 by the time of Book 4 & while women can possibly have babies up to age 50 or so, they tend to stop coming less frequently by the time you reach your early 40s or sometimes even late 30s (I myself being born to a 41 year old mother) so I doubt Pema & Tenzin will have any more children & I don’t think they want or feel the need to anyway.

Do not compare yourself to your parents, your sibling or the top of your field. Even to your peers can be dangerous as they have had a large 'head start' on you. Compare yourself to yourself. Not yesterday's or last week's, but last month or last year. Are you growing over time? It will fall from time to time. It won't be constant gains. Even if the answer is 42, we may not be asking the right questions. Life's hard, don't beat yourself up too much. Life will probably do that for you.

I am glad that LOK showed real life parent/child relationships and how that has followed them into their adulthood. It isn't pretty half the time but this is why the show felt a little more grounded than ATLA (not to say that ATLA was not good but it was GREAT TOO but in a child like fantastical dreamers way and innocence).
