Ms. Garr is one of the best All-American actresses ever. She is a classic delightful person on and off stage. She is sorely missed by the viewing public.
Garr is a legend considering how many great films she's been in from Young Frankenstein, Close Encounters, Mr. Mom, Tootsie, etc. One of my favorites was a not so big of a hit film with Richard Dreyfuss called Let It Ride where she played his neurotic, near alcoholic wife who loves him, but also can't stand him and his love of betting on the horses. Saddened when she announced her MS diagnosis.
@@andrewyoung2796 Best line of the movie was when Tilly comes up behind Dreyfuss, covers his eyes and says, "Guess who Trotter" in that mousey voice and without hesitation he says, "A football salesman!" 🤣
An even less hit of a movie, Mom and Dad Save the World, an epic goofy comedy with Jon Lovitz and Jeffery Jones. Beyond B movie but funny still and she killed it.
I had a major crush on Teri Garr growing up in the 80's and into the early 90's. She was not only smart on screen but she had that sexiness without even having to try to be sexy.
I think I first saw Teri when she appeared in Star Trek TOS as Roberta Lincoln in the episode entitled, “Assignment: Earth,” and like so many 14-year-old boys, I immediately fell in love with this woman who was a good eight years older than I was, and I continued to enjoy her work throughout her career. She was very good and very smart and so many of us loved her. I hope that she is still hanging in there.
She was soooo sexy in that episode. Another hilarious stint was that movie "Miracles" She was the original"Letterman girl." Just loveable. It's saddening to hear about the MS. My mother had that and it's a bitch.
I loved her in that episode too. Apparently that almost spun off into another series with co-star Robert Lansing, but it didn't happen for some reason.
I worked in a hotel on the south side of Atlanta back in the early '70's and had the pleasure of meeting Terri Garr when she stayed with us. She was cute as a button and nice as could be. I got to drive her back to the airport and we chatted like ole friends.
Her as Phoebe Bouffay's mother in Friends was perfect casting. I thought if the characters mother was going to be anyone it would be Teri Garr. I always thought Lisa Kudrow looks like Teri Garr.
I was sorry she wasn’t brought back - like when Phoebe got married. Garr was diagnosed with MS in the latter 90s after years of symptoms so that may have had something to do with it. She didn’t work a lot after that, at least as far as I noticed.
Her credits go further back than most of you know. She and Toni Basil are featured dancers in the "Whad'd I Say" scene in Viva Las Vegas with Elvis & Ann Margaret.
Teri married actor John O'Neil in November of 1993, so she had actually been married for 19 months at the time of this interview. They divorced in 1996, so the clock was already ticking on that relationship when this interview was conducted. They adopted a daughter, which is Garr's only child.
I could’ve totally been friends with Teri Garr. Down to earth, no flash, but a lot of substance. What a difference in talk shows these days. Now, the guests seem to always be on, flicking their hair back, dressed to the nines, etc. Conan was an awesome host!
Teri Garr is always fun to watch, a great guest. A fine actress and easy on the eyes. I loved her in the seemingly undervalued film, Let it Ride, with Richard Dreyfuss, among others. It's a gem.
@ibgarrett 'I got the horse right here. His name is Paul Revere, and there's a guy who tells me if the weather's clear, 'can do', 'can do'. The guy says the horse can do...
@michaelengland7228 Tootsie is great. Great cast. Bill Murray was real good. But, it was hardly undervalued at the time, like Let it Ride was. I believe Jessica Lange won supporting actress. Although it could've easily gone to Teri. Imho.
I'm old enough to remember Terri Garr back in the day, I always thought she was a cute and beautiful soul, I sincerely hope she doing the best she can with the hand she was dealt. We all have a cross to bear, unfortunately some worse than other. God speed Terri.
Teri Garr... the ultimate HS Prom Date. PS: She was a state of the art Movie Star that didn't seem like a Movie star. No glitz. No glamour. No odd hang-ups. Just a fun witty soul. That would have made the ultimate HS Prom Date. ((-:
She was being so rude to Conan, not giving him any respect to make jokes. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt cause it seems she was at a bad point in her life seeing how she speaks of the marriage and that she divorced less than a year later but yeah, Conan was amazing in this one
It’s interesting to see how the level of obligatory sarcasm during his interviews lowers over the years as Conan finds his voice and grows into his role as a comic icon for an entire generation (I’m an X-er, I loved Letterman, but I RELATED to Conan like the funniest peer at the party).
Her point was intelligent and serious and he disrespected her and made stupid jokes. I am not sure he even got the importance of her point. She politely asked to change the subject. I guess it would have been career-limiting to have walked off the stage, but he would have deserved it if she had.
She was making a valid point about the way male and female nudity is presented. But Conan was trying for laughs so he never acknowledged that valid point.
Actually as a woman I agreed with his point more lol. I love making love to men but I don’t need to see penises on stage. Women topless is less explicit than penises. So I’m with Conan. I’m straight so I’m not into watching gay men naked either.
Good Actress, yes. However, its the core of genuine personality which emanates on these late night shows (see the Letterman appearances) that reveal her truly exceptional features.
It's an interesting feature that she was so good on talk shows. Flirty, flighty, intelligent and completely enchanting. She never got a movie role that showcased her real talent. Nothing came close.
Does anyone remember her and Robert Lansing when they did an early Star Trek. It was so fun and was supposed to be a pilot for a series for then but it never got green lighted. She was adorable in it.
A great actress who killed it in a slew of classic movies, someone I took a little for granted. She was so ubiquitious! She was in everything! She was like Dabney Coleman or something. Now I look at Dabney Coleman and I see genius! At the time, I was like, "oh there's Dabney Coleman again", lol. Teri Garr is known for comedy but she was just as great in drama. She's fantastic in "The Conversation". Her scenes in "Close Encounters" are incredible. In the middle of this sci-fi epic, we have this small little Cassavetes movie going on with this dysfunctional family and those are some of the greatest, most memorable scenes in the movie. I miss her. I hope she's in the least amount of discomfort right now, where ever she is.
I remember seeing her on Star Trek. She was also an extra in several Elvis movies as one of those female dancers that came out of the woodwork whenever Elvis sang.
Maybe, maybe not, when she said some people can fake being smart at the 3:04 mark, and Conan asked her how long she dated the guy, the audience thought Conan meant she faked being smart and she followed along with them, and she backtracked. It is obvious to anyone with an IQ above an earth worm that Conan meant the guy.
Don't forget Teri Garr in the Black Stallion - Has to be the most incredible film work ever during the first half when Kelly Reno and "The Black" were stranded on the island. I personally have never seen a more beautiful 1/2 hour of human (the boy) and horse interaction. She played the mom in the second half. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h2hlWgQxi0Q.html
As a Brit I keep being perplexed at the US attitude to nudity. Few people on this side of the pond react in the same way, with shock and something close to horror. Isn't it time you got over it?
We miss seeing you on the big screen Teri Garr, but thank you for all the great films you've given us. Someone listed them below. Tootsie, Close Encounters, After Hours, Let It Ride, Mr. Mom, Short Time.. Thank You Ms. Garr.
@Edward Cox yeah cause it now just makes Kirk and Spock a couple of liars when they told Mr Seven and Roberta that they would have interesting adventures, lol!
Oh I just love Teri and Conan is really funny.. always really funny with Teri too lol She’s such a pretty lady:) It makes me so sad about her MS.. she has such a delightful fun out-going personality
This clip is from 6-15-95. She is talking about her marriage. She got divorced a year later. From IMBD. John O'Neil (November 11, 1993 - 1996) (divorced, 1 child) I looked on Wikipedia and the child is adopted. As of 5-31-2024 she hasn't married again. "In 2002, Garr announced that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, the symptoms of which had affected her ability to perform beginning in the 1990s. She retired from acting in 2011."
Whenever I see Terry Garr she reminds me of her enticing line in the movie Young Frankenstein’s when she asks the doctor, 👨🏻🦳👍💘would you like to go for a roll in the hay?
So smart and such a great talker. Always snaps back with a...what's the word??? Relevant. Is that the word? She hits the bullseye every time. She catches if there's a slight misunderstanding or a wobble and clears it up. Wonderful personality. Wish my wife was like that. Wish I never got married. Whoops. No, I didn't mean that. Yeah, I did.
Her Aunt lived on the street behind where I grew up. Got to meet her one summer. She was a very nice person to a group of kids. We washed her car for her and she bought us all ice cream. You can imagine my surprise when I saw her on TV a few years latter.
I liked her from the time I first saw her doing MJB coffee commercials. She reminded me of one of my coworkers at the time. She was great in "Tootsie."
Teri was smokin' in '95! What a doll! Shes extremely hot in Young Frankenstein but I believe she's at her hottest in Oh, God! The commentary on the DVD is well worth listening to so you can hear Carl Reiner and the rest discuss her. It is NOT PC! lol But she is there discussing the film as well! A real treasure that com track. One of my favs. Keep on fighting Teri! You're an inspiration!
Male and female nudity comes down to predators and prey. In the movies when they show strip clubs with women watching a show they are all up hollering and dancing to warn the rest of the group of a predator. The men watching a show are all sat quietly as to not scare the prey away. Just my theory.
