Teri Hatcher on QI on Superman 

In the pilot episode of Lois & Clark, way back in 1993 (1994 in UK), it was Lois who said “super superman” when Cat Grant (played by Tracey Scoggins) said “did you find out what the S stands for “....after Superman flew Lois in his arms into a packed Daily Planet newsroom.

I was really quite surprised to find that Teri Hatcher is soooo funny. Cool.

I would suggest its a retrocon answer, and when created it was S for superman

I'm confused. It's an 'El' as in the Family El. Which may inspire hope but I didn't think it really means 'hope'.
