As a kid I remember liking T2 more than the first film. More Hollywood action more fun more explosions etc. 25 years later and I am liking the first one more, due to its sci-fi noir, horror, cyberpunk sounds, rawness and dystopian 80s feel.

this movie will always be a favorite of mine. Between Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton's chemistry and performances, Arnie's cold, terrifying portrayal of the Terminator and the fact that these things are SCARY. This film perfectly encapsulated how terrifying an unstoppable killing machine is, something the newer films...well...didn't do.

@drlee2

The performances are flawless in this movie. Schwarzenegger had a very tricky role of playing an emotionless cyborg and I don't think it's nearly as easy as people think. He still had to be convincing there was a machine underneath the human flesh and he nails the T800 with subtle robotic movements throughout the film. Biehn is great as a futuristic warrior with PTSD. And Hamilton is exceptional as the film's anchor and centerpiece playing the most relatable character. Every reaction and emotion from Hamilton feels 100% authentic in this masterpiece.

@Edi_J
@Edi_J Месяц назад
Yeah. The progress slowed down dramatically. If you read SF novels from 1960's or 70's you see that their authors witnessed so fast changes fueled by the war that they thought everything will be different in just 20-30 years. Then everything started slowing down, less and less money for innovations, less and less risky experiments. More and more money drawn away from investments and wasted on "social benefits" for those who don't add any value and just vegetate. And now we're at the edge of the ultimate slow down - lack of capital, as the most numerous generation is retiring and getting back their invested capital. Financing risky and innovative stuff will be much harder, the progress will slow down even more. Maybe "the next industrial revolution" - i.e. augmenting human thinking by AI will help, but as we see in this movie this comes at the cost of additional risks.
@christosvoskresye
@christosvoskresye Месяц назад
@@Edi_J Pretty much. Maybe a more accurate statement would be that progress has taken place in ways that are not so obvious. Back in the early 1990s, I worked on a Thinking Machine TM2 supercomputer. If I did the calculation correctly, my somewhat-obsolete laptop has as much RAM as that had. Even earlier, I remember that in the late 1980s, I could fit Microsoft Word and whatever documents I was developing on a 1.2 MB floppy disk; Microsoft Word has long since become ridiculous bloatware, though the increase in RAM and hard disk space, to say nothing that it is now delivered mostly as a web service, conceals the bloat.

Dude, just like everything about this movie is so damn cool. I love the music. It's just one of those ICONIC cyberpunk flicks that wasn't even TRYING to be the epitome of what we now see as like "Vaporwave" but it's just THAT to a T. Just a genuinely good film, too. And I love how it's RIGHT on the border of being an 80s B-movie slasher, but it's done with such sincerity that it's elevated to just being a good film and really stretching it's budget. For what it is, any "rough spots" are forgivable. This film inspired me in so many ways as a creator. The score, the look, the feel, the texture of it. This looks pretty good. I usually hate remasters and I think in many cases they can RUIN the tone, but this isn't so bad.

There is an intensity to The Terminator that none of the sequels manage. As much as I love T2, there is a gritty realism to this film, from the acting to the cinematography, that makes the consequences feel more present, and death closer.

I'm blown away by the editing and planning. Going from each external shot to internal shot, even the movement of the actors perfectly aligns with the external shot that was just cut from. Look at around 0:59 where the car moves around the bend and the actors are mid way through being pushed via centrifugal forces, with Biehn correcting the steering. It's easy to forget that the external shots of the vehicle were filmed totally separately to the interior ones. So bloody seamless.
