It's so surreal for me to imagine what Terraria music must sound like to someone new to it, I've been playing it for so long that all of these are just forever ingrained into my mind
I've heard them so many times that the only emotion I get from them is "that's music". When I try to listen carefully I recognize that it should sound good, but I can't feel it.
A new Terraria player here (2 week playing) in my opinion this game music not too impressive for me so far, I barely feel it except for few song like Boss 2, Town, Raining Morning and Underground Jungle maybe Underworld theme I like this music vibe and fit to atmospheric theme other only like some part of it like Crimson and Boss 3 theme at beginning I like it but after the music go on I feel nah.
@@okkoheinio5139 Focus on the instruments and separate sounds/their combinations, associate music with real life weather. Listen to music when you don't play.

Just wanted to add: the reason some boss tracks are just “Boss #” and others have the name of the boss they play for (Empress of Light, Moon Lord, etc.) is that the numbered boss tracks are shared by many minor early game bosses (Boss 1 plays for 7 different bosses lol) while the named tracks are for specific major mid/late game bosses and are only used for 1 boss each ALSO, SMALL LORE The Crimson and everything in it is a giant living hive mind, and it wants to consume everything and kill you. It’s red and black and the general theme is “blood” The Corruption is a corruption (duh) caused and strengthened by everyone’s evil actions and thoughts, and it wants to consume everything and kill you. It’s purple and green and the general theme is “evil” The Hallow is “purity taken to the absolute extreme,” seeking to stop the spread of crimson/corruption. It does this by killing everything near it, including you. It’s pink and bright blue, filled with unicorns, and the general theme is “rainbows (that will murder you)” I like how these are reflected in the music, with Crimson sounding like a horror movie, Corruption being similar enough to the original music to sound just plain wrong, and Hallow being happy and cheery, but with the underlying evil shown by the small bits of crimson/corruption instruments
I love seeing these types of comparisons of themes and different takes on similar ideas. The crimson as a living organism spreading like a parasite vs the corruption as a necrosis, rotting nearby matter.
I recently actually did an experiment on that. I asked some people who have never heard of terraria to pair the music to the biome/ event, almost all were accurate each time. That really shows how good the sound design of those themes is, that somebody who has never heard them can tell where they are supposed to feel or rather that they illicit this feeling they’d also get when in these situations
...most of the time..... Planteras theme, for example, doesnt loop very well, but its mostly fine because the fight doesnt take too long before one of you is dead, so most of the time you dont notice.
@@noahboddy1484 plantera is that boss, first time you easily loose, second time you kill it way easier, third time she's hard to kill like the first time
One of the things I love about the Terraria soundtrack is that its soundfont is as full of eclectic campy cliches as the game itself is. The skeleton-filled Dungeon gets a xylophone, the movie-monster Eclipse gets a pipe organ, the creepy, insidious Corruption gets a waterphone, the Underground Ice gets sleigh bells, the Pirate invasion gets a male choir, castanets, and a sound like wood creaking, the Martian invasion gets that famous theremin "oooo-weee-oooo" that's practically a stock sound effect at this point, and the big-bad cthulhu-like Moon Lord gets heavy dubstep beats and a noise like an alarm siren going off. Edit: also, the underground and ocean themes use downward scales to imply peering down at the cthonic depths and the space theme uses upward scales to imply ascending to dizzying heights.
My favorite part is that, despite the overwhelming level of cliche in the music, it still manages to remain weirdly electronic, wacky, and almost otherworldly. It's like no other soundtrack I've ever heard in that regard. Its musical tropes are the same as those you would use to represent the biomes in real life (like the upbeat, hopeful tones in the overworld theme) but the almost alien feel to it reminds you that this is still fantasy, and there is still a lot of confusing and magical content to be discovered.
My favorite has to be that real mushrooms produce a electric signal that can be transmitted to a synthesizer to create wacky noises. And low and behold the mushroom track uses those noises.
58:08 Fun fact about Lunar Boss: The song is for a group of minibosses called the Lunar Pillars introduced in the 1.3 update (2015)but the song itself was leaked/teased way back in the 1.2 era (2013) a year or two prior, hence its double placement in the soundtrack.
I love how the jungle theme has sounds that sound like animals are joining in on the song and adding to it, like bats squeaking or frogs croaking. It’s fantastic. Whole soundtrack is PEAK
As far as i am aware its less talked about/popular, but the Crimson Theme has something similar, the groans of the Face Monsters feel like part of the soundtrack as well.
terraria veteran with 10k hours here, every single one of these songs is engrained into my brain and I could hum any one of them off the top of my head
@@floorpanel8749 maybe in the dungeon. Its happened where ive gotten sick of the dungeon theme, not because its bad, but because the hours I have in the dungeon.
But It Still Confuses Me Why Somebody Else Put In The Effort To Put A Timestamp In The Comments When The Person Who Made The Video (Best Guitar Coach In This Instance) Already Made Timestamps.
this soundtrack is so recognizable for its style, that when i helped develop music for an indie game, they stated they wanted “something that feels like the corruption themes in terraria” and i knew exactly what they meant. such a brilliant one.
The Eclipse event references a bunch of old horror movies, frankenstein, mothra, etc. The music reflects that era well! The jungle ost litterally has sound effects of frogs and bugs, and the ocean song, you can literally hear bubbles and other aquatic noises.
Damn this is awesome. Terraria is a game I grew up with, and have put over 2000 hours of my life into. Seeing someone react to a soundtrack I've loved since I was a kid puts a smile on my face. I'm 18 now, and I don't ever think I'll shelve this game.
i also don't think re-logic will ever shelve this game cuz every time they say "alright guys, final update!" they just come back in 2 years and go "uuuhhh... so there's still another update we've been working on..." 2 months later... WHAT DID I TELL YA BUCKLE UP BUCKAROOS, CAUSE IT'S 1.5 TIME
If the devs keep at this it'll be impossible to shelve this. Labor of love is coming out soon and also TML 1.4! Time to replay the game twice... Again.
When I started to play terraria about a year ago, I thought the music was great, however, one of the songs that completely caught me by surprise was the mushroom song. I also thought that the boss 1, and 2 were awesome as well as the Christmas heavy metal one. I also learned that no matter how good the underground desert music is I must NEVER go down there
I absolutely love Terraria. An amizing game, beautiful, great gameplay and *ohhhh...* the music! so good. First video I've ever seen of yours and I loved your reactions. I think this is up there with other games(like elden ring) and even movies(interstellar in particular comes to mind) for some of the best OSTs ever
I can’t stop rewatching this, it just brings me joy to see someone well versed in music experience one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, from a game I’ve been playing for about 9 years now.
I have put SO much time into understanding this ost. I even reached out to the composer Scott Lloyd Shelly and got to talk to him about it. Really masterfully done ost

Bit of a note: Andrew Spinks (lead developer) pronounces it “ter-rare-ia”. Coincidentally, I’ve been pronouncing it the same way for years despite only finding out a couple months ago that Andrew pronounces it that way.
Of course its pronounced that way, the name Terraria is most likely derived from the word Terrarium, they just tweaked the word to sound like a place/world so Terrarium becomes Terraria. Since most popular Terraria players are Brittish however, and they say words a little different sometimes, the common pronounciation has become Te-rawr-ia lol
Most people pronounce it te-rawr-ia which i have been doing for years. Sure, the creator pronounces it like that but that will not always be the "correct" way. It's the same as the GIF pronounciation. The creator says JIF but you would hear more people not pronounce it that way
Great stream! (I was the guy listing the proceeding tracks in chat replay) I would suggest Subnautica or Stardew Valley OST's next but it's up to Dan and channel members.
Well I mean… it’s technically not terraria ost, it was actually made by klei, then re-logic made the eye of chthulhu boss theme for dst Still would’ve been nice to see his reaction tho
Terraria music is cool and all when you just listen to it. But when you fight against wall of flesh, in nether, avoiding all obstacles and hoping for healing potion cooldown to end, hearing "Boss 2" is definitely another feeleng. Anyway great stream!
My favorite thing about the terraria soundtracks is how it feels like the music is talking over itself with the different features of the biome it reflects. Like in jungle, there’s a watery echo, then different instruments call out like the many creatures that live there. Or in boss three there’s the rumbling of a boss’s roar followed by the heroic drums of our character facing it.
In all my years of playing, I have to say I’m finally actively realizing how perfectly every theme fits it’s circumstance. It just goes right with the gameplay to the point where sometimes a almost don’t notice it. But most of the time I’m just bobbing my head and humming along. Whether I’m chopping trees or killing GOD
Fun fact: the underground hallow theme is just a distorted mashup of the regular underground and hallow themes, I think it's super cool (underground corruption and crimson are also like this to a lesser extent)
I really like that the ice theme starts with an unknown tone, progressing to a happy tone then regressing to a creepy tone. The first time you walk out into the cold and snowy day, it’s pretty mysterious. But as you get comfortable you begin to feel excited. Then the cold slowly creeps over your body as it gets colder and colder, making you realize the true nature of the cold.
I... did not expect for you to react to this, but I'm honestly great you did. This is the very first game I bought on steam back in 2011, and still come back to play this game from time to time. Every "last update", and they come back with another random update every now and then. I love this game very much.
Terraria's Music is straight up fckin Art. It's the Magic breathes life to every single scenery, event and biome in game. I don't think i would enjoy the game as much as i did without its iconic sountracks.
I really love how you explain some of the music theory behind the tracks! It’s actually really interesting to see the techniques the composers use, especially for someone learning music now :D
This is probably by far one of my favorite videos I've seen in a very long time. The breakdown of certain aspects of soundtracks and the facial expressions was amazing! Definitely subscribed.
Cant Wait For Him To Listen To The Otherworldly Soundtrack From Terraria, It Certainly Takes The Ost's Soundtrack And Calamity's Soundtrack And Fuses It Together!
I have almost 400 hours in Terraria and I don't remember the soundtrack being this fire, damn... I guess it's one of those things you don't pay enough attention to while playing.
Im too busy fighting for my god damn life that im not noticing it Underground theme hit different tho i will purposefully avoid things just to vibe to it
theres nothing wrong with wanting to loop music in a reaction. terraria (tuh-rair-ee-uh) has really unique music and it does a great job to immerse players in the game. im so happy you decided to react to this. also YEEES RISK OF RAIN 2 IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

Seconded (or thirded). Honestly all the PMD games have insanely underrated music. Also, glad that Ori is on the list, that soundtrack is also incredible.
I would love to see you react to Terraria: Otherworld's OST. Terraria: Otherworld was sadly cancelled but it's OST was finished and published AND it is also included as an easter egg in normal Terraria, if you go to a specific world seed and talk to a special version of an NPC you can toggle Otherworld and Terraria soundtracks so instead of the normal "Overworld Day" you would get the Otherworld counterpart "Overworld Day (Otherworldly)"
AYOOO I WAS WAITING FOR THISSSSS I am originally from the deltarune streams but terraria makes me happy too so I am glad you listened to it's soundtrack :)) its very pleasant to listen to ngl
As someone who has messed around with making music, I have no idea how the composer of this soundtrack makes these songs. Each song has a million different instruments and I can't imagine how long it took to make them.
47:25 I've heard the "Crimson" soundtrack before, it's actually my preferred world corruption; however, I'm sitting here wondering: Why does it sound like the music's sayin' "feet"?
I might pump up the possibility speed of you listening to the Made in Abyss Soundtracks 1-2 by using super chat. Btw loved the stream. The terraria music is one of my favorite to listen to on my free time. They are just so groovy and different from each other. Reacting to your reactions honestly made my day.
The Made in Abyss soundtrack has some of my favourite songs ever but it wouldn't be great to listen to every song imo because most of its songs are pretty weird
@@krimson8317 I’m pretty sure there have already been weird songs played on this channel. And you can never know if you like the songs if you don’t listen. personally i love the soundtrack, i like some more than others, but i still like every song. And so might Dan, thats why i am suggesting it to him. Nad as Dan quoted during the stream, “All music is art, art is subjective”
Been waiting for this one for a while! I know the current list is utterly massive, but I would love to request a game ost. It’s an extremely small indie game, but the soundtrack is extremely lush, atmospheric, and beautiful. The game is called “In Other Waters” and I highly recommend it!
This dude loves music. Just love seeing people do things for passion. Even spanish is my native language I can understand perfectly what his talking about, its incredible, this man has a talent... amazing.
The game's music style and the style of the things added to the game has changed over time, they used to use the same songs for several different things, and now they give unique songs to each thing usually. For example, "eerie" used to be used for the underworld, the blood moon event, and meteorites, but now it's just used for the blood moon.
I'd love if he did a video on the soundtrack of Night in The Woods, that game and its soundtrack has always held a special place in my heart, Alec Holowka was a genius, rest in peace.
I think the Terraria soundtracks are really well made. Some are really good like underground corruption, underground crimson, or the moonlord song. Some aren’t that catchy like the main forest song, the ice biome song, or the blood moon song but they have just the right amount of melody for their atmosphere. Like the main forest song isn’t too catchy but it’s not that boring which is a good way to introduce you to the game.
I absolutely love the Undergroud Hallow theme. Not only the way you hear the mix between the hallow theme and the underground theme but also just the way it’s mix. It’s glitchy and doesn’t always mix nicely. It really shows how the hallow environment is actually corrupting the underground. Underground corruption and crimson do the same thing but personally I think underground hallow does it the best
I've personally never heard of your channel, but I got suggested this stream and I love the reactions, the descriptions, and all the terminology I'm learning as I watch. Video Game OST's are always so amazing to me so its really cool to see someone who knows music very well go over and react to them. I would love to someday maybe see you react to the music from the OneShot OST or even some of the very ambient No Man's Sky Music. Glad to have been recommended your channels!
A big thing about how Vanilla Terrraria feels so different from Calamity is Calamity OST is like 80% boss themes while this OST actually has a large part of biome and ambient tracks rather than pure boss rush intensity.
Can agree, the original Terraria focuses more on first-time playing experience, fit for exploring and gradually discovering new mechanics, while its various threats patiently slumber awaiting for the player to accidentally disturb them: "Explore, build, craft!" Calamity is definitely focused on other things: collecting the right items, making setups and challenging yourself against a lot of bosses on your way: "You know the drill. The mighty challenge awaits."
Spirit Mod has a nice spread of biome, event and boss too which helps it mesh more with generic Terraria personally. Though I know I'm biased, Thorium/Spirit/Orchid is my main loadout of mods prior to the swap to 1.4 stable, though still respect for Calamity for DMDokuru's work and it helping to push higher-grade soundtracks in general.
These songs bring a huge amount of memories from 2015 when my friend introduced me to the game, I get so nostalgic from hearing these pieces, hearing these songs almost brought me to tears of happiness. An easy 9,3/10 so almost perfect but I've never heard a perfect game soundtrack and I don't think it's possible to make a soundtrack perfect.
I love this OST, not only because it's so cool, but because it's so well structured too. Eg. Underground tracks are intertwining themes of underground & biome, the way the tracks loop is also very clever, because loops rarely are perfect, there are small differences and they keep the soundtrack from being repetitive while you play the game.
It's so weird listening to more than just the intro's of these songs, because the songs are so familiar yet so alien because I kinda tune them out in favor of the enemy sounds so I don't end up loosing 3 platinum to a bunch of enemies.
I’m glad to hear someone agrees with me that they need to make a metal Christmas album, amazing review and I would like to recommend you take a look at a Kirby soundtrack :)
Just want to say, Deerclops theme (which was missing from the playlist) and the Old One’s Army are crossovers between Terraria and other games. Deerclops is from a brutally hard survival game called Don’t Starve and the Old One’s Army is from Dungeon Defenders, specifically Dungeon Defenders 2
Since you've also reacted to the Calamity mod OST, you should also react to the Spirit mod OST. It has a similar tune to the Terraria OST, yet it's also very unique by its own. It is a certified banger OST.
I always love the "overworld night" theme because it looks amazing when it's night cuz of stars and etc... And the theme just... Uh nvm Idk how to explain but it just sounds amazing at night in terraria.
Honestly it’d be REALLY cool to see you react to the hollowknight soundtrack. It has a lot of instrumental dramaticism with huge builds and excellent drops
I feel like not many people talk about Eerie. Sure, its a good blood moon theme, but I really miss when it was 1.3 underworld music. It suited it so well...
@@jellya951 Same! It was a cool rare easter egg and honestly should’ve been kept as a rare chance upon creating a world that it would swap the locations of the forest and snow such that you would spawn in it. Would’ve been cool.
I didn’t even know I wanted you to react to Pokémon mystery dungeon explorers of sky until that superchat mentioned it! One of my favorites of all time
You will likely find this much calmer than the calamity OST as the calamity ost mostly contains boss battle music but here you will find more idle music simply ment to not leave you in silence as you explore.
I got recommended this video randomly, and this is a very nice welcome to your channel, I love Terraria's OST. Will definitely be watching more of your videos!
To the person who requested Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky: I love you. But in all actuality I would love to see you react to the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky OST as well. One of my favorite games of all time and it really shaped my childhood
