Torrential rains hit the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, and as night fell, the situation began to deteriorate sharply. Modigliana Mayor Jader Dardi said: "The situation is very dramatic. It is even worse than in 2023." Recall that in May 2023, the city was severely damaged by devastating regional flooding, which claimed the lives of 17 people, and the damage amounted to about 8.5 billion euros.
In Bologna, Ravenna and Forlì, rivers overflowed their banks, over a thousand people were evacuated from dangerous areas.
Water is reported to have rushed downstream, causing flooding in the village of Marceno in Brisighella. "A sudden and large wave is approaching from Modigliana, passing through the village of Marceno," the Brisighella town hall said on its social media page.
People in the affected areas are being asked to temporarily leave their homes. The plan is to house those evacuated in a school.
The mayor of Castel Bolognese, Luca Della Godenza, said the situation was "far beyond the worst forecasts." "The situation is deteriorating at an ever-increasing rate. The river level is being measured constantly and has already reached 6.19 meters in Tebano. Firefighters and local police have been mobilized and will use megaphones to warn citizens of the seriousness of the situation we are in."
The Savena River in Bologna is also rising rapidly. Officials have ordered the evacuation of residents from lower-floor homes in the affected areas.
Landslides have also blocked several motorways. Severe weather warnings are in place in Emilia-Romagna and neighbouring Marche for the next 24 to 36 hours. Schools and official institutions will be closed and people are advised to avoid travel and work from home if possible.
