"Toxophily" *does* roughly translate to love of archery! It's just one of those quirks of linguistics that the "tox" prefix became associated with poison rather than archery!
Toxic: Mid 17th century: from medieval Latin toxicus ‘poisoned’, from Latin toxicum ‘poison’, from Greek toxikon (pharmakon) ‘(poison) for arrows’, from toxon ‘arrow’. That's the full progression through the ages. You're welcome 😊
I've been to Brazil and every toy/children's product was """"in english"""". I've seen a backpack with "puke" written on it, sentences written in gibberish, etc. I always had a nice chuckle
My grandpa always used to tell me, "Make sure ta putcha fingers on them fish whenever you can, sonny, cuz cats without fish touch ain't got no soul." Then he'd put his sunglasses on and get right back to playing his saxophone, which he carried with him everywhere.
Maybe it's a Kinect-based text input system? So you have to literally lean to the side to spell things? (I know it isn't but I had to get this cursed idea out of my system.)
Matt! I HAVE A VIDEO IDEA!! People explain times when they messed up (BADLY) with sign language. Like talking with deaf people, practicing in class, ordering at a restaurant, etc.
Found a creator who does ASL interpretation for deaf and hoh kids in a school, he shows a bunch of signs that are similar, like naked/depressed, shy/wh*re, bug/or**sm. I will get back to you when I remember his name
3:11 Imagine calling the fire department because your house is on fire, you're deeply scared and might lose everything, and then the fire dept shows up with trucks that read "fire - you deserve it" on the front...
4:45 To explain the mistranslation of "Virtual Boring" The original text is in Japanese at the top, written in Katakana, the Japanese script for translating loanwords from other languages. In Japanese, there is no "L" sound in the traditional sense. You see, there are characters that are PRONOUNCED like "L" (ら、り、ろ) but are romanized with an R (Ra, ri, ro) Because Japanese has a confusing distinction between R/L characters, it can tricky to translate back into a language with a clearer distinction between those two letters. And so, we get "Virtual Boring" ボーリング ("booringu") can translate out as bowling OR boring, and there's no way to tell without context. The translator here might have not been aware of the context and translated it out as "Boring" Thanks for coming to my TedTalk
6:00 honestly that would be a real fucking funny twist if we ever get Batman media where instead of becoming Batman like normal he goes full on spider-man, personality and everything else for no reason (idk, Bruce hit's his head and the spider suit somehow ended up in his closet because of Dr. Strange somehow)
@@thaDjMauz But is The Abnormal Drug Trafficker abnormal compared to people in general, or abnormal compared to other drug traffickers? Because it'd be funny to have a drug dealer who's consistently friendly and wholesome, aside from selling drugs to people.
If these really are condoms advertising with a knockoff image of Pikachu, I'd be really interested how many children now owe their lives to these things.
Matt, your content always makes me laugh. Every Monday I check my recommended page and there’s another one of these ridiculous, strange, and absolutely hilarious videos waiting for me, and I can’t recall the last time I didn’t let out at least a snicker because I couldn’t help it. The way you read things just hits my funny bone from the right angle, and I couldn’t be more appreciative that you put time and effort into doing this. Thank you. :)
Ever since my cat went missing last night, I've been feeling quite down. However, this gave me a good chuckle. Thank you for the videos, Matt. Update: HE'S BEEN FOUND :D
Hope you find your cate mate, a lot of the time they show up on their own a few weeks later (you should still probably worry about them) but I hope things work out for you
2:20 I think baby brain small universe is supposed to say “baby’s brain cells” because I suppose a cell is kinda like a small universe. Probably translates directly to that in whatever the language this was originally in. Like how potato in French is “pomme de terre” which directly translates to “apple of the earth” but we just have a word for that in English.
The violin (violin) is a kind of a super clean orchestra played to ring carry instruments. It is widely spread all over the world, is the modern orchestra string of the main instrument. In the music it plays very important position, is the pillar of the modern symphony orchestra, but also has the difficult playing skills solo instrument. Hey Matt! I have a video suggestion for you, you mentioned it in the past: Card/Board game rage quits. I’ll go first: A while back I witnessed my cousin snap a chess piece then proceed to try & eat it.
Alternatively, he could do rip off films. I'll go first. You want to watch the terminator? Nah we've got the terminator at home. Terminator at home: the terminators
5:45 o my god... it's a misspelling of Geat, which is an iron age germanic tribe that came from Scania, the same island that the earlier GOTHS claimed to come from...
6:20 oh god I remember these I used to have one of those crocodile toys when I was younger and it broke, turning it into an actual deathtrap. Rather than the mouth closing to where it was supposed to it would slam completely shut. this only made me and my brother use it more because now it wasn't just a game but a gamble with our fingers
ya'll what have i done. i accidentally trained myself. i cannot sleep without a youtube curated matt rose mix playlist. matt rose's voice is an essential part of my sleep routine. (skull emoji)
My grandma got me a heater once and one of the points in the instructions was: “please note that the fireproof protection shield cannot protect against children and the disabilities.” To my absolute shock and confusion, the heater malfunctioned.
Was I the only one who got scared _absolutely shitless_ at 4:52 ? Definitely was not expecting to fear a car crash when I'm nowhere near a road or car of any sort (idiotic brain) 💀 Great video as always Matt, sending love :)
My family has a little penguin race thingy, like those things you used to see in the front of the store? We got it for Christmas and it's my favourite thing to bring out at Christmas now because it's the essence of engrish. It's called "runing go" and it has little texts on the side that say "the comity club" and on the other side, "the small penguin of a group of likeability!" It's my favourite thing to bring out at Christmas.
ngl, I actually have a toypedo and i didnt even realise it said that until the second part of the word was isolated. It's actually a nice toy if anyone is wondering, only really works well in calm waters though. It's like a dart for underwater and it skims and stuff. Edit: i also have that thing at 4:30, but either I have a slightly different version or they fixed their translations, because the instructions actually make sense on mine. It's called a "Mini Boomerang Spinner Drone"
To me the toypedo one doesnt really even seem like engrish, just pretty unfortunate wordplay lol. I mean "tor" and "toy" are just 1 letter apart so if you didnt know any better it could be a pretty easy mistake to make since it is literally a toy torpedo so calling it toypedo is technically accurate, albeit pretty uncreative
I swear that Matt is the only person on this planet that can immediately find the right accent and pronunciation to everything. Heck, even if the word doesn’t have a clear pronunciation, he’ll invent one!
@yamahadx7synthesiser Technically, a lot of dairy products are made using bacteria (yogurt is the most obvious example). So yeah, we technically buy bacteria all the time, just usually as part of something else
@@calibricalypso Ah, yes. The highly recognized fusion career of "veterinarian yogurteer". It's so hard to find good health care for your pet and fulfill your need for cultured dairy products simultaneously
I love how, while I'm watching this, there's and ad on the side of the screen that says "When Poppy Playtime in Toca life, come To Find Your Inside Partner" It fits so well
random video suggestion: another round of “why the fuck is this in my recommended?” like 3 months ago the algorithm started recommending me videos like “is life worth it” “how to go missing without a trace” and shit like that and I thought for a moment that the algorithm knew something I didn’t lmao
