massive Valentines Day Sale, plus 10% off on any purchase with code Delos. Thanks to Established Titles for
sponsoring this video!
Established Titles is a fun gift, meant for a good laugh and not to be taken too seriously. Established Titles bought a couple hundred acres of land in Scotland, and have pledged to protect it and keep it as is forever, and they donate to plant a tree for every order through Trees for the Future. The title packs do not grant the titleholder peerage or a right to rule, but are based on a historic Scottish custom, where landowners have been long referred to as “Lairds”, the Scottish term for “Lord”, with the female equivalent being “Lady”.
We hope you enjoy part 2 of our brush with Hurricane Kay. We prepared as best we could, and now there was nothing left to do but wait. It's a pretty vulnerable feeling to just be sitting and waiting, unsure of what's to come. Cruising life has presented us with all kinds of challenges over the years, but this has to be one of the most mentally tough ones we've faced, especially since having Sierra has really changed the way we see everything.
The hardest part of it all was definitely seeing some of the other boats struggle and feeling helpless to do anything about it. Knowing that it's someone's hopes, dreams, maybe they worked their whole life to make it a reality...and now that dream is on the beach getting pounded by swell. It was heartbreaking to see.
We are incredibly grateful to have come out from the whole experience unscathed, and we hope that those of you here that have your own boats or are working towards one in the future can learn valuable tips and lessons from this episode.

We proudly present to you our 400th episode! Episode 1 was published May 29, 2010. If you would have told me then that more than 12 years later we would be putting out our 400th episode and that millions of people would have shared in this adventure with us I would have NEVER believed it 😂 What a wild ride it's been, and we are so incredibly grateful to have each and every one of you here with us for the journey 🥰 CHEERS and big hugs from the whole fam!

I appreciated the video footage and the emotions that were lived. I don't have anywhere as much experience as the Delos crew but may I make a few comments nonetheless? Three to be precise. 1. If strong winds in an anchorage are expected, I wouldn't leave the inflatable on the foredeck, where it would only create windage and increase strain on the anchor. I'd leave it in the water off the stern, where via drag it would help keep the bow to the wind. 2. To this effect I would also raise a riding sail. If the boat is a ketch or yawl, a bit of mizzen is enough. On a sloop or cutter, take the topping lift (or spinnaker halyard) and raise the riding sail above the stern and attach the sheet to the boom. That helps keep the bow to the wind. 3. In the really bad gusts, I'd have the engine on. Fuel permitting, keeping engine in gear reduces the strain on the anchor and increases your chance of riding it out. Cheers from a licenced captain.

Hello from Scotland - love your videos - please DITCH that sponsor - Established Titles is a SCAM - categorically, no question. They've changed the site to admit it is a 'joke' - but their prices are ridiculous for 'protecting a piece of woodland'. If it was that easy, EVERY home owner in Scotland would be a Lord or a Lady 🤣

In order to be a laird in Scotland, you have own a certain amount of land. I think something like 30 hectares. But even if you are a laird, you’re not yet a lord or lady and should not use those titles as part of your identity as you could be committing a criminal offence.

It is amazing to think when I first came across your VLOG in 2010, I was laying in a hospital bed fighting Leukaemia and not knowing what my out come was going to be. The Christmas of that year I was told to go home and be with my family as it would possibly be my last with them. I was 48 years of age with a young daughter I had lead an active life until this point I was Private pilot a Sailplane instructor and wanting to live my life to the full and I would watch your VLOG and dream of one day doing what you were and Fridays were the day of my week to watch your weekly episodes. well we are 13 years on I made my 50th birthday and in one months time I will be 60 yrs young and still watching SV Delos with my dream still there, to buy a boat and sail away. I know the boat I want and have looked at 2 of them so far. Thank you for helping me remain sane with all that has gone on and to be able to watch your 400th show great guys

Sierra is very cute in her cap. But Scottish Title's is definitely a bit dodgy. If the price is worth the framed "Title" then okay it's a novelty gift. As other's have stated you don't own the land they just assign it to you in the company's records. The company still legally retains official title.

I feel exactly how you feel we've lived on our boat since 2013 full time. We've gone through so many storms, anchor dragging, rough seas. Unfortunately, we lost her 09/25/23 at sunset cliffs luckily crew saved by coast guards. Boating full time is so exciting and rewarding but at the same time its full of long nights, lots of physical work & you do everything possible to be safe, but mother nature will take her in a moment's notice. We will get another boat but you become so attached to your boat working on her and sailing day in and day out. She's priceless to us everything we owned and so many memories.

I had a boat on the hard for 2 years getting refurbished and on windy days I would definitely go to the Harbour and check all my Props were secure coz if the wind blows a boat about a Boatyard it makes a lot of damage. One of the things I've said since going thru a direct hit from Hurricane Sally, is that unless you've had to ride one out you just don't know what it's like. The helplessness and despair you feel because there is nothing you can do to escape or help others. Being prepared is 95% of the battle. You guys did a great job of preparing. It brought back a lot of emotions from riding our storm out. Great video.
@blacksand357
@blacksand357 Год назад
Hurricane Sally was really bad because of how it caught so many people off guard. It was supposed to go to the west of us and here in Pensacola we got nailed pretty hard, though not as bad as Ivan in 2004. You're right, the best advice is to prepare for the worst, hope for the best and above all, stay vigilante. Also, go with as big of an anchor as you can handle, it can make all the difference.

You missed one very important thing in preparation. A very old trick used by square riggers of the past. A tandem anchor! Two anchors in line 30 feet apart. I would put the heaviest anchor in the water first followed by the lighter tandem after about 30 feet. It is best to shackle the lighter (but still heavy) "weight anchor" shank and plow end and keep the main chain intact by-passing the light anchor. The little yacht that dragged, need not have done so, he had THREE anchors but was simply pulling all three out with his boat, unknowingly. The tandem anchor system ALLOWS the light anchor to pull out if there is a really massive gust, but weight of it keeps the chain low, or horizontal and stops the main anchor coming out. Also carry at least 12 feet of very heavy chain, to shackle to the main anchor, and then to main anchor chain, this is highly beneficial in keeping the chain horizontal on the sea bed. With the electric system on the anchor, you would have to man handle the main anchor and HEAVY CHAIN out first. Even if this is too heavy for the power winch, you can help that by fitting an anchor trip to both anchors. (Light rope with a float attached) to sea depth. If both anchors set you would need man power to unset them and drive the boat directly over them when the slack is hauled back in to unset the anchors. A short length of heavy chain is usually efficient enough without the tandem anchor, and easier to unset. But hurricanes need brute force to fight THEIR effort.

I have experienced high winds a couple of times in my lifetime. When that roar rises to a scream I have learned things can get dangerous in a hurry. On December 19th, 2006 the wind rose to a scream over house taking down a huge hemlock that quite literally destroyed the southern half of my house. It cost well over 250,000 dollars to rebuild and that was 15 years ago. The gust that took down that tree was estimated to be about 90 miles per hour.

I wish I was talented enough to paint the portrait of you two I "saw" this morning watching this episode.. in the dark of the storm ..safe below both facing forward at an angle.. your eye gaze lines meeting and crossing a foot or so before each of you. Neither dressed for the Annual Sailirs Ball which you two could easily win the Sea Mate Loving Couple contest.!! With your strength and determination still evident in your visages.. I saw such youthful tested people standing there in the face of danger... heightened knowing you have your young child aboard too. Brian and maybe Kaza both with a hair or two of well earned grey .. Kaza might think I had forgotten my glasses but she looked so young.. Brian too.. A perfect image and compositional perspective for a portrait and then I saw you both morph ahead a decade or two and how Wondeeful a couple you still were and seemed to have grown in inner strength and compassion. A warmth of expression seen in skin and eyes ... subtle but like a Sun just about to burst forth with its energy and love for life and their family .. circumnavigate the world maybe twice by then successfully. What a portrait. !!!! I hope someone (else) can give the "JOY" of it a go..

The experience portrayed reminded me so much of surving a major bushfire. The slow build, the planning, the preparation, the random things that can happen no matter how much you prepare. That it just keeps going and totally drains you but you got to keep going. Those unfortunate folk who do all the right things but get hit. The community that comes together. Feeling exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally.

I haven't kept up for the last couple of months and came back to catch up. Karin looks so different, Sierra is so big and Captain Brian is still at the helm. Very happy you both work together to keep the Delos safe as always. Your good hearts are evident throughout this video. The sailing community is well represented by you and your channel. Safe travels.

we found ourselves in a similar situation with our 45 foot motoryacht in the Mediterranean archipelago of Malta, we dovetailed to avoid tearing the main line and then tied two lines to the central bollards of the yacht, so that the effort was subdivided by three points on the deck.

I had a great friend and mentor. JSH, he served as an Enlisted US Navy Seal, he finished his education and returned to become a STS officer. He was one of the most “Grounded” wonderful people on the planet. I could and would follow him to hell and back. He taught me how to really “ meditate” upon retirement he returned to where he grew up. He loved it there. He would work with Disabled Veterans. I was planning to visit him. He wasn’t answering emails or phone calls. JSH took his life. I as well as many others were crushed. I said to my son (tears pouring down my face) “what the hell do you do when Superman takes his life?” Not skipping a beat my son says “ you pick up his cape and you become Superman!” I served 30 years………….I’ve lost 103 friends and family. To some, that’s an entire graduating class………. I tell you this sir, because you could be my friends twin brother. I see a lot of him in you. God bless you guys and please be safe out there. Thank you

Never apologize for being afraid. Staying in a hurricane brings out our most basic & primal fears, the fear of the unknown & the fear of losing everything. Until you've done it, its hard to relate to that kind of ongoing terror. A hurricane wait - is one of the most drawn out, high stress situations anyone can go through. You both did as much as is humanly possible and you were blessed with the relief that came with a sunrise on calmer waters. So very glad that your home & family were able to come out the other side unscathed !Thank you so much for sharing such a scary event with us all. Happy 400th Episode!!!! You've all come such a long way, literally & figuratively :)

It's a fun novelty gift, and they do in fact work with the tree planting partners- that can be verified on their websites. So I'm not sure why everyone gets up in arms so much....
