I was going to skip this one to watch another movie that caught my interest, but then I saw "Christopher Lee" in the title, and decided it would be worth it just to see old Chris at work. Love Christopher Lee, he could menace the pants off of anyone, which made him an excellent vampire.

This is a true golden and more-or-less "underground" classic from the early 60's,NOT too well-known but remembered by those who watch it. It's a classy and atmospheric Euro version of Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla" story about a lesbian vampire. Note the nice quiet and subdued audio;not the usual noise and explosions and shouting you get with today's movies,and no bodies being torn apart or explicit sex---how refreshing! It makes you wonder if the human race going backwards or forwards!

"Gee, where's the 'jump scare'?," an early-20s y.o. would ask today. Much of the 60s work - especially from Italy et al did a wonderful job of capturing the eerie atmosphere, just tantalizing but staying at, say, PG... afternoon TV's "Dark Shadows" learned from these! Creepy...requiring you to invest in it... Masterpieces in their genre!
@dennisanderson3507
@dennisanderson3507 6 лет назад
Addendum: Also, the manner in which an effect of vampiric "dwindling," or "melting away," is achieved nicely with mere a) acting b) camera angle c) actor/crew coordination. It's called "film making". It works!

Hammer had Frankenstein and Dracula in color in the late 50s with C Lee starring. It was ahead of its time. Shocking to see in color...like going from 2D to 3D with the sight of blood in red. B&W feels sooo....1930s ....like in Bela Lugosi land. I guess they had their reasons. Certainly atmospheric with all the background sounds combined.

Film Italien 1963.
