@Raquel Stoner I feel you dear. I have three cats now. In my "former life" back in 2017 my only cat - and I loved her so dearly, rescued her as a kitten - died from a car accident. The pain was relentless, and made me cried like a little baby!
I remember when this song came out one of my good friends in the seventh grade lost her older brother his name was Kenny. And she said every time she hears this song it reminds her of her brother. And she said she will never forget when her dad got the news that he had passed he was walking in the front yard and he fell to his knees and just wept. Rest in peace Kenny 😔
I lost my oldest sister, several year's AGO. Due to cancer I'm what you call a intavert. No emotions. But when my family laid her to rest. I totally Lost it.
This was a tear-jerker back then and still is now. Thanks so much for bringing this one back for me. Cheers, Steve Someone else recommended Spiders and Snakes by Jim Stafford. I second that! Great song.
I cry every single time I hear this song. I was 8 yrs. old when this came out. Why do I still get weepy? lol! Oh my gosh, Spiders and Snakes is a great song!
Spirit in the Sky and this song is really appropriate for a funeral. They are great song choices and "spirit in the sky" just makes you happy, coupled with this song they are a great combo. Sorry for your loss.
The original version of this song - called “Le Moribond” (translated “The Dying Man”) and sung in French - was based on the tale of an old man dying of heartache due to his wife cheating on him with his best friend. However, Terry Jacks, in dedication to a friend who was dying of leukemia at the time, and reworked the track , excluding references to the aforementioned story and instead basing it on a man’s final words to some distinct people whom he loves. There are three of such individuals who are highlighted in the track. First is a friend he has known since childhood and as such, recounts fond memories of the two of them growing up together. The second appears to be his dad, whom Terry acknowledges has tried to exert a positive influence on his undisciplined life. The third person is referred to as his “little one”, implying that she may be a child. What is definitely known about “Michelle” is that she helped lift up Terry’s spirit at times he felt depressed.
@@corvus1374 No, it´s a song of the Belgian singer Jaques Brel from 1961 "Le Moribond". (I prefer the original version.) Rod McKuen translated it in 1963.
I am 25 i couldn't listen to it those words same words my greatgrand father told his wife as he fell a sleep not knowing he'd wake up at the age of 92 ..
I read that Terry Jacks was producing The Beach Boys at the time and that they didn’t finish it and he then did it on his own album - he didn’t write it though.
@@yensilluap The Beach Boys actually DID finish their version (it's available on bootlegs) but ran into some kind of legal entanglement and it wasn't released. Jacks was better known as a producer at that point of his career, but added his vocals to the same backing track and ended up getting a HUGE hit out of it.
Just to give credit where due; The original, titled Le Moribond, was written & released in 1961 by Jacques Brel, a famous Belgian singer, songwriter, poet, actor & director. Rod McKuen rewrote the lyrics to adapt it to English (it doesn’t directly translate well). The Kingston Trio was 1st to release the English version in 1963, then McKuen also released it the same year. Terry Jacks decided to do it after he produced The Beach Boys version, which they decided not to release.
Wow! This beautiful song came out when I was about 14. Everybody was mesmerized by it & it was always on the radio. Thank you so much for reacting to it Jovaughn. Had almost forgotten what a great voice Terry Jacks had. Wonderful memories!
I lost my sister Joy to leukemia. My daughter Jessy was her Michelle. She was definitely the "black sheep of the family", and when she was fighting what she knew was a losing battle, she could not bear to hear this song because it made us both cry so hard. I was her trusted friend. The fact that he sings, we had JOY, so many times, this is the only song that still reduces me to tears every single time!!!
My best memory of SEASONS IN THE SUN? It was 1973 I was in seventh grade and I was in bed with the flu for a week and would constantly hear this song on heavy rotation on WABC 77 AM Radio in NYC.
I was always moved to tears by this song but I love it and his voice is perfect for this song. I'm so happy to hear it again as I was young and very fit when this came out and used to do my mending listening to this and others on the radio. I used to wipe my tears on the mending and have to wash it again lol. Take care and stay safe please everyone, God bless you, love hugs and peace to you all Mary-Ellen UK
This song make me tear up every time I hear it. It just goes to show how truly fragile a life is and how much we take things for granted. How most people really don’t appreciate what they have until they’re losing it unfortunately.
My parents would literally run to turn the radio station when this song would come on because I would full on melt down crying if I heard it. Seriously I would be inconsolable to the point of hyperventilating. I wasn't even 5 years old.
I love this song!! Terry Jacks had an awesome voice. I heard him say once that he had a big fear of singing in front of people. He sang in the 60's with The Poppy Family. But he was really faced with that fear even more with the success of "Seasons In The Sun." I'd love to see a reaction to "Which Way You Goin' Billy" by The Poppy Family.
I think this is my favourite reaction so far, firstly because it's such a fantastic song which I've always loved. I really admire how the song is constructed, it's so, so sad and yet still manages to be a really great, reflective tune. The second reason it's my favourite reaction is simple, your reaction J, your heart was breaking along with mine and everyone who really appreciates the lyrics.
Dam Just walked in my door and starting listen to your Reaction and this song was playing, I JUST SAID GOODBYE TO MY AUNT,SHE JUST PASTED A HOUR AGO, WE WERE VERY CLOSE, THANKS HIT HARD BUT GLAD TO HEAR IT.
This song is what my mom used to play us as kids, she would sing it with us it’s been a major part of my life my oldest sisters name is Michelle that was her part! We recently just played this at my moms funeral! I miss my mom so much
Oh my loved my K-tel albums. Only problem is you just have K-tel and find out later that 'Do you Feel Like we do' was a lot longer then 3 1/2 minutes long. K-tel was kinda like the Readers Digest condensed books of music.
Just like a picture she was laying there, moonlight dancing off her hair, she woke up and took my by the hand, she gonna love me in my Chevy van and that’s alright with me...
This song came out when I was in the third grade, and it's always made me emotional. It was my favorite song back then. It makes me cry now every time, especially, since I've lost so many people I Love ❤️
A real tear jerker but sang along to it.. And enjoyed it so much ❤️ This one always touches my heart. When it came out at the discos young lads would come up to me and ask me to dance. Even though it wasn't apt for a slow dance. But it became one when you heard it. Both of us singing every single word to each other looking into each others eyes. I loved it and still do all these years later.... Flipping heck 46 years ago.. And I still remember how serious we would be. A couple of lads would tell me. They were the one that I had to dance with to this song. Oooh it's lovely and heartwarming when you hear a song in your past and it still stires up emotions. Think I'll have this at my funeral Thank you for liking it.. ❤️
i'm 53 and had this song on 45 vinyl way back when and not sure why but it's so graitifying to see how much younger people still love these tunes and how, in fact, they never really went away and have also enjoyed a big resurgence because of the internet. very cool vid well done.
Yasmin Love IKR? My niece’s name is Michelle and we used to sing it together. I don’t think we understood the lyrics at the time, but it was special to us. 💖💖👍
Turd Ferguson Aw, nice memories. Though I didn’t understand the lyrics, I got a feeling it was a sad song. I’m the youngest of 6 so my teen siblings introduced a lot of great music to us younger ones. 🥰💓
Rod McKuen is the author of a poem "Seasons in the Sun" that he based loosely on another poem from a French author. Terry Jacks was married and he and his wife at the time had a few songs that were in the top 40''a in the '60's---that's where I went wrong" and "which way you going Billie?" they divorced later. I believe the intention of this song had to do with the wars of the time. young soldiers dying and what they had to live for. It is a sad song but a lovely song. thank you for posting it!
I’ve seen various comments about who did and didn’t write this song. That person only wrote the English lyrics. The tune is “Le Moribond” by the great Jacques Brel.
Terry Jacks didn't write this song. It was originally written and recorded by a Belgian singer/songwriter named Jacques Brel in the early 60s. The American poet Rod McKuen re-wrote the lyrics in English and that version was recorded by The Kingston Trio in 1963. Terry Jacks produced the instrumental track for this version in the early 70s, intended for The Beach Boys to record the vocals. Their version was completed but left unreleased due to some legal issues, so Jacks recorded his own vocal over the backing track, and ended up with this MAJOR hit. There have been numerous cover versions over the years, but this one is considered the definitive version now.
I always kinda denied this song as anything but sappy. But , I just balled my eyes out thinking about my nephew Alex, whom we lost to cancer 20 months ago. Cathartic.
Terry Jacks took an older song, called le moribond (which had a much darker meaning and message behind it), and kinda rearranged the lyrics for a friend of his that was given 6 months to live because of lukemia(I think he only lived for four months). He wrote this from his friends perspective. Very sad. Great analysis. Love your videos.
The 70's some of the best music ever. I was 12 when this song came out and I still have the 45. With all the times I've played it over the years, I'm surprised it is not worn out. This reminds me of a meme I ran across. "the reason the latest generation is so angry is because their music sucks". We had great music in the 70's. Thanks for bringing it back for us "old folks".
This is a song I think you don’t forget after hearing it. That melody just stays with you. Not an upbeat driving song... but I think it’s one most would still sing along with while driving down the road. I really liked this back in the day... and still enjoy hearing it now.
i remember playing in my sandbox as a kid and this song came on the transistor radio, and I remember crying. I still get a lump in the back of my throat when I hear this song.
Jay, long before you born, AM radio played this song over and over and over until we were all immune to its simple pleasures. It sounds pretty good today until about halfway through.
Terry Jacks was a one hit wonder on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Seasons in the Sun is an English adaptation of the Belgian (French language) song Le Moribund. The origins of the French original is an injured soldier saying goodbye in his head to his friend. Terry Jacks rewrote in English, and added the verses to his father and girlfriehd, based on the words of his friend who was dying of leukaemia.
This is a special kind of song for anyone who can feel the message. Thank you for the reaction. I was an 11 year old when this was new but a had the feeling that this song would live forever.
I remember this, such a sad song, so happy you played it, haven't heard it in forever, another beautiful song is Bobby Goldsboro "Honey" also a beautiful song about loss
I used to sit in the very back seat of the school bus with my best friend, and this is one of the songs that played on the radio. I lost her to cancer when we were just twenty-nine. I could remake these lyrics for our childhood school days. Can’t wait to see her on the other side. Too many seasons without her.
Great Song!!! The song brings lots of memories back to me! . A song that will forever be a one-of-a-kind classic that truly stands apart from the rest. . Thanks Jay!!!!! 🙌💜💜
This song, to me, seems to be sung from the perspective of a soldier going off to die, or remembering while he was dying, during the time of the Vietnam War. It was a song I remember from my childhood as being a happy song (because of the chorus), but as I got older it had a different meaning to me.
I'm 48 years old and haven't heard this one in decades. I remember being a little kid and this song would come on the radio when I was riding in the back seat. It would make me cry every time it played. Thank you for your thoughtful critique and for bringing back a memory for me.
This was what i called one of my lullaby's when i was little. My sister would sing this song to me to calm me when i was upset. This song and Joan jets put a dime in the jukebox
A couple of great 'One-Hit' wonders from 1974 are Wet Willie and their song, 'Keep on Smilin' and William DeVaughn, 'Be Thankful For What You Got'. Really great.
I could feel this coming. This was a huge tear jerker. I don't know why it was such a giant hit but it played over and over on the radio. Same era as Alone Again Naturally.
@@holyspacemonkey thank you, she was the role of our mother and father, she will be dearly missed but she's with me in spirit, I am a spiritualist, she is knocking on walls and is showing signs she's here, just not the same. I thank you once again. tears for Cindy
she told me, Linda, you got more spankings from me for banging the pots and pans you and your one girl band, I'm so sorry, I don't remember, I only remember fun and music with my sister! Thanks again - these are great memories to relive with these reaction video's I cherish them!
When I was a really little boy I was given a portable cassette player and I recorded some songs off the radio that I really liked. This song was one I was obsessed with. I'd play it over and over. The chorus really sounded like it was for kids, but I did understand he was talking about someone dying.
I was 14 when this came out and I will never forget it. Ingrained in my memories. Deep is absolutely right. Music was and always will be a learning experience for me.
I'm 59 and this take me bak to the youth clud on kilnhurst rd in rawmarsh wen I was 14 year old absolutely love reminiscing obviously lv the emotions that cme with it 😪😪😪😪 feels beautiful I'm a soft sod it's the way these songs make u feel 😪😪😪😪 BEAUTIFUL XX
