Filmed a year before he was taken as a hostage in Lebanon whilst trying to negotiate the release of John McCarthy, the Archbishop of Canterbury, then Robert Runcie's, special envoy meets with mountaineer Chris Bonnington at his remote homestead in the Lake District.
As he introduces the programme, "some people choose to live close to danger. Others, have danger thrust upon them". Even then, Waite was no stranger to the perils of his work and likely had a good idea what might happen to him sooner or later.
In this programme, Waite and Bonnington share a mutually-informative and cathartic exchange of experiences and views relating to man's resolve to conquer the unknown and even the known, where it is felt there is danger to be stared in the face, and overcome.
Both men come together in a spirit of solidarity over the dichotomy of considerations as to whether the tenacity of human endeavour can be put into secular or theological terms, whether the belief in the Almighty or belief in oneself can often be in constant struggle, in any case embodying the desire to utilise one's own gifts to further the collective understanding, and validation of, the human condition and its purpose.
