Daniel Delu they have heard of it they just don't care, it's a me first attitude everyone has , I zipper and try to lead by example and things go much smoother for me but some people are such jerks about not letting anyone in front of them that if your signaling forever to exit they will still sit in your way and not let you pass and neither will the next or the next and you end up having to make some un safe choices in order to get across , i normally would just take the next exit but in this case this was the only exit I could take if I stayed on I would have ended up clear on the other side of town

DUDE this gave me an idea! Put LED lights that say "AUTOPILOT" all around the car. Mount them inside the glass, on each side, at the roofline. The front lights could be reversed so that they'd appear normal in other people's rear view mirrors. Other drivers could see this Tesla is self driving, and act appropriately. In theory.
@RealNaisuCinema
@RealNaisuCinema 4 года назад
Greg Little that would be tacky though. And the whole point of auto pilot is that they shouldn’t have to act differently auto pilot should drive like a normal (good) driver

@@RealNaisuCinema I'm thinking a small, discreet light, similar to a CHMSL, but smaller. Now, your feedback inspired me again, what if they're actually installed in the bodywork, under the paint, and are invisible except when activated? Maybe 2"-3" tall letters. Only one on each side, front / back.

Following distance can pose the same problem. Now that everyone understands those traffic light cameras can't be used, stopping for a yellow can get you rear-ended, too. "The Mercedes driver starts accelerating past me as soon as it signals a lane change" Classic Triangle area drivers
@BryTee
@BryTee 4 года назад
The problem here was the auto-pilot should've sped up to go into the gap, but it is limiting its speed so behaves like a rookie and self-absorbed driver. Secondly it left it too late to move over and should've moved over earlier anyway (typical rookie/unsafe driving behavior), then as it signals flashes 7 times before even moving a little, 2 or 3 signal flashes is enough before making a lane change, so this makes the already slow driver look like a rookie, and who wants a slow or unsafe driver to be in front of them, thus she speeds up. Thirdly the auto-pilot was overly cautious in moving over, and could have continued instead of giving up, what we see is the other driver speeding up (but only a little from what I can tell), the auto-pilot wimped out (much like a rookie would do), and as the commentator says so, the auto-pilot behaves like a jerk. Finally, when the auto-pilot finally does decide to switch into the right lane it does so just before an on-ramp, yet another a rookie (and potentially unsafe) thing to do. Who's programming the auto-pilot, they seem to be a rookie driver, and this probably explains why I know to give a Tesla extra space because they often drive like a rookie and do unsafe things way too often. I've previously assumed it to be narcissistic Tesla drivers, but now I wonder if maybe it's their auto-pilots that make them look like jerks?

I see what you mean, but I don't think this situation fits the description. This is a lane to an off ramp. Lots of cars need to merge into one lane here, since there's some traffic that off ramp can't handle smoothly. It's actually very unsafe to wait to merge until the end, when there's that much traffic. It causes the tesla to come to an almost stop on the adjacent lane, where people are driving much faster. I have seen it happen here in Europe, where someone was either being a jerk and cutting in front of about 50 cars, or just didn't realize the exit was backlogged and needed pre sorting. The car wanted in the not moving lane, since the ramp was quickly approaching, and stopped on the second lane of the highway, since there was no way he could merge this late into the traffic jam. A lorry was driving there, at quite the speed, since it still is the second lane of a highway, and he didn't anticipate the sudden stop. He hit the car very hard unfortunately. It happens very often at that spot, also due to drivers not letting the cars merge, as they feel cheated, it can cost you 15 mins of traffic jam, and then some jerk comes along and gets in front of you, without having to wait 15 mins. These maneuvers are also what partially causes the jam, as cars have go keep stopping to let someone in front. Please don't do this in this situation, it's so dangerous. Unless you want to get some insurance money, because that car that was hit won the case. The lorry should've been able to stop they said. Hm.

I think this is probably the first video I’ve seen that clearly demonstrates the capability and limitations of autopilot (Thank you for sharing, more please!). Knowing the road ahead, get in the lane early, etc, those are the kinds of things that a “local driver” would know, and that (eventually) will need to be in the Tesla Autopilot database. Not sure how fast it will adjust for construction issues that cause the same kinds of congestion: Stay in this lane because - construction (or whatever). I hate those folks that race ahead, then swerve in at the last minute.... (but yeah, I was guilty of being a jerk when younger, so, here’s to ALL CARS having autopilot, so traffic flows more smoothly and safely for everyone).
@Enforcer_WJDE
@Enforcer_WJDE 4 года назад
Are you referring to 8:52 with people racing ahead? Never heard of zipper merge? That's why you have such a long lane on the left side. If only half of them did the zipper merge ( "swerve in at the last minute" ) there would be less congestion. Traffic wouldn't be a problem if people actually used their eyes to watch their surroundings instead of staring at their phone or even holding it to their head.
@PtylerBeats
@PtylerBeats 4 года назад
I’ve heard the argument that this is the point of having the two lanes. When there’s construction, and one lane gets closed off, there is no point (other than being overtly nice) to get over right away. It just creates an unnecessarily long, congested line. I always get in the right lane and drive past every car because if EVERYONE did it, it would cut the traffic in half. Now I don’t get upset if someone doesn’t let me in. Because I understand that people see it as “cutting” in line. But I’ve seen lines be so backed up that it creates a dead stop on interstates. I’ve seen entire intersections blocked off, and the line wouldn’t get that long if everyone drove around the line. There should be a system where people alternate which car goes. Left lane, right lane, left lane, right lane, etc... now this takes way too much reaction times for drivers and it may be slow. But in theory, it would free up a lot of the road. The line of traffic would be halved, and it wouldn’t be as far backed up.
@PtylerBeats
@PtylerBeats 4 года назад
Enforcer1975 this is way better explained than I tried lol I’ve never heard of “zipper merge” before. People get really mad about this, but it gets so bad in some areas, that’s it’s dangerous to get in that ridiculously long line instead of driving around it.

Even with all of the sensors working correctly, the computer still has to make tons of tiny but important decisions with little information that computers just plain aren't good at doing without more data. This is why I laugh anytime anybody says self-driving cars are already here. It will be a very, very long time before truly autonomous vehicles exist, and I would argue they never will until every car on the road is equipped with some sort of tracking system with bidirectional communication.

Why does the traffic slow so much and even come to a stand still. In the UK I’ve never gone below 70mph on a motorway with the exception of blocked lanes or crashes. When there is a entrance to a motorway it either creates a new lane or is quite long to allow you to merge. Drivers will typically move over to the 2nd land to allow vehicles merging. Also I’ve noticed how no one used lights to signal to cars I front or behind. (Flashing full beams usually means “go ahead” to allow drivers to merge, letting them pass through tight spaces. Hitting hazards usually means thank you or watch out depending on the circumstances).

The first version of AP I tested would cutoff traffic merging onto a highway every-time, being a total jerk. Now the software does an excellent job of letting folks in very smoothly. Its amazing to see the advance in behavior. Now if Tesla can improve the left lane hugging tendency of NOA we'd have a real winner on our hands for interstate travel. Because of NOA's peculiar lane choices, I typically drive in AP and not NOA.
@TheTechofTech
@TheTechofTech 4 года назад
NoA now respects Auto Lane Change overrides, meaning that if it suggests a lane change and you cancel it, it won’t keep suggesting the lane change like it did in earlier versions unless it is for navigational purposes. So, now I leave it in NoA and just cancel lane changes I don’t want while manually triggering lane changes when I think it’s a good choice.
