We have these at my local Sainsbury's - they're bloody amazing. A great upgrade from the old, slow ones they had before. Just tap my card and go 20 minutes later, after my doing my shopping, with a full tank. Great show Bobby. Keep it up!

What folks heard: model 2 is cancelled! What they actually said: We're working on a platform that will work with assembly lines in our current factories. We don't need to build a new factory, and we should be able to start production of new models (including model 2) quicker this way. How the mainstream can so thoroughly mis-understand what management team says in a conference call is mind boggling. I listened to the call... Tesla announced that they stopped building a separate factory to build the model 2 because they have enough room to build using the existing lines. They are making a next generation platform for the model 2 and the robotaxi, and they hinted at other models on the same platform, and they will build them on the current lines, so they might even come out ... they said... this year. There are a few concessions in the platform to make it compatible with the current assembly lines. so... the model 2 isn't cancelled at all. It might even be accellerated.

9:57 I do not like pickups but I am French, I have no need for a pickup, it would just be a pain to drive and park. But trucks are the most sold vehicles in the USA so Tesla had to have one for EVs to continue to take shares in the US. At least people can chose to buy a model 3 ou Y or S or X or a CT, and with time let's hope US citizens will buy more sedans than trucks. Regarding a Tesla cheaper than the model 3 it is not so easy to answer because it is not clear what a cheaper car than a model 3 is. A smaller car implies a new production line so huge investments, so the best way for now could be to just make the model 3 cheaper. Furthermore I think individual cars have no future in cities, and 80% of Europeans live in cities. In cities we need large sidewalks, secured bike lanes, good public transportation, and shared cars or taxis. So do we need a small city car ? For who ? To conclude I think a robotaxi is a better choice than a smaller Tesla, with of course always cheaper versions of the model 3. Because I think we need cheap electric taxis for when a car is needed, in low density areas, but also sometimes in cities. Because I think as long as FSD works the investment for vision based robotaxis is low with high profits. And because I think FSD will work fine and be safer than humans. However it does not mean it will be easy, but if Tesla had only played safe we would not have so many EVs on the road nowadays, not from Tesla and so not from other brands as well.

They didn't *have* to sell a truck and they certainly didn't *have* to sell this 3 tonne monstrosity even if they did. This is all on them as are any injuries or deaths these vehicles cause. Though I suspect Musk simply doesn't care. I am just glad this garbage likely won't see the light of day in Europe and many other regions.
@alexhouseman
@alexhouseman Месяц назад
It's actually not a surprise. Musk has a definite pattern - setting companies the task of solving very difficult problems so that they maintain an advantage over the competition. Building a basic smaller EV now that everyone has copied the giga-casting methods they pioneered in car-making is not going to cut it. High voltage EV drive train and batteries, 48V Lo-voltage architecture, ethernet; All these are will now be copied and will not be a competitive advantage. FSD is the differentiator for a few years if they can crack it.

@danharold3087

@@alexhouseman Exactly. As long as the Chinese governments are willing to spend money to own EV manufacturing the only path forwards for Tesla automotive is falling profits. Eventually negative profits. Not saying a limited time recovery from the current problem is impossible. For that matter China may stop heavily subsidizing its cars. In short Tesla set out to accelerate EV adoption and it has succeeded. It doesn't have to make all the cars. Things looked much differently when they announced the goal of 20 million. Better to pivot to AI and license the software that runs the software defined car. Then if and when automotive is no longer profitable it is no longer the bulk of the company. Note energy is at 25%

That’s my point: those stats are using supervised fsd and were compiled before v12. They would not have done so without seeing data we don’t have access to, especially China considering their data security concerns

What's relevant is.. Are they safer than human drivers? @tedmoss is suggesting they're 15 times safer. That's sounds optimistic to me but I'm guessing that they are safer now, or very soon will be. We need two things.. • Proper research. Everything we're getting at the moment screams at us from one side of the argument or the other. • Proper supervision of over the air updates including staged rollouts - just in case.

To do what ? Supermarkets are not on highways between cites. And they often have "accelerate charging" (eg 11 kW) or at best 50 kW fast charging. How could you do a 1000 km trip with "supermarkets" ? Regarding the price, superchargers are cheap regarding the costs, and it is probably why Tesla is making a break in the expansion to deal with less sales. But if you do not need superchargers and if you have less expansive alternatives, it is great ; but please understand that other people have other needs.

REPEATING MEDIA MISREPORTING There have been various wrong conclusions that are circulating despite recent clarification by Tesla in the Q1 earnings call. ○ Tesla priority is autonomous taxies, but they are ALSO going to make several smaller car models. ○ They are making smaller cars SOONER than planned (rather than being cancelled). ○ What is POSTPONED is their ideal small car design, to make small cars sooner they will use a slightly less advanced design. ○ A model suitable for taxis MAY also be suitable as private cars. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

8:30 Tesla Model 2 cancelation. Several days ago we found out that the real reason is they plan to produce the vehicle earlier. They want to use existing factories because world demand is down. By using unused capacity in existing factories they could be producing vehicles this year, but more realistically 2025H1. They plan to use it as the platform for multiple vehicles. This was stated pretty clearly in the earnings call.
@logicalChimp
@logicalChimp Месяц назад
Iirc they also stated that it would be based on the Model 3, rather than being a 'new platform' (which is what the 2 was going to be)... in that sense, Reuters is correct... the 'planned' next-gen model 2 has been shelved, in favour of a 'cheaper' model 3 built on the current production lines. Tesla still produce a cheaper EV (good), but not a 'smaller' EV (not so good).

All of a sudden we learn he's closed down his supercharging department and tells all drivers of any car that they'll have to fend for themselves. When you have a bloke in charge of "anything" with such a capricious nature then it's a bit of a worry to staff and shareholders alike. His so called "management" of Twitter should have been a wake up call to all and sundry that Elon does things on a whim sort of thing. There again he certainly is consistent when it comes to "downsizing" his workforce. For all we know elements of his workforce might well be snapped up by other manufacturers on an information mining expedition. You couldn't blame ex Tesla staff for feeling just a little miffed and consequently happy to "share" Tesla secrets despite any NDA contracts. Yes, and no... based on various posts, it sounds like the 'next-gen' Model 2 *has* been cancelled, and that Tesla are now working on a modified/cheaper Model 3 to take its place (because that's quicker and cheaper than designing an entire new platform from the ground up)... (based on Musks own Twatter ramblings) In that respect, the Reuters article *is* correct, even if Tesla are still working on a cheaper vehicle - but it's a 'cheaper 3' not a smaller & cheaper 2 (and in the UK, the 3 is actually a comparatively big vehicle, that barely fits on my drive)

Another excellent show. Grid connection is extremely difficult it has to get better. I am having to wait around 6 weeks for approval to connect my solar PV installation. I should not be surprised as there are eight EV rapid chargers in a public car park locally which have been sitting there unused for at least 15 months to my knowledge due to a lack of grid connection.

Back in the 70s the Saudis jacked the price of oil to $40/bbl ... it caused pandemonium and the 3-day week. So here we are today with oil around $85/bbl, and it has been a lot more than that in recent memory. Get used to the idea that oil at $200 will become the expected norm.

Apparently, Lidl has the 2nd highest number of charge points in France 😮 (rapid I presume). Charging at supermarkets makes very much sense. I am just wondering if 22kW instead might be sufficient as most current and up-coming EVs will have 11-22kW on-board AC charging capability.

ABN is the most enjoyable way to keep abreast of the important Alternative Energy news, especially 'Roberts Rants'! Looking at the UK ERC peak supply report mentioned it's a bit scary to see they conclude that "Forecasts that delay the peak of conventional oil production until after 2030 rest upon several assumptions that are at best optimistic and at worst implausible"..... Yikes.....

"I'm going to ask Helen about that." What a privilege to have such a fantastic physicist available to answer your really hard questions. You are Sooooo lucky Robert. As an aside to answer your question - I live alone, so I am one of those who just want a small electric car. But one that can, when needed, run for long trips on a hot summer day, so about 300km at 110kph with A/C on, is indicated. I gather this is really not an unusual request, most of ICE cars around where I live are pretty small. What I do *not* want is a mid-sized car, or one of the MANY big electric SUVs we keep getting pushed at us.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hmm ... new cables that can transmit more power you say? Was there any science offered in the clip? Why not Google up national grid transformers, why they exist, and how they work. You might Google up the efficiency of transformers while you're at it to understand why transformers are a "good thing". Always a good idea to fact check any info given by so called experts. Plus might be a good idea to Google up "transmission line" theory too. And why national grid transmission lines are AC, extremely high voltage and not much current. Think "power". Hope that helps.
@mrslowly9985
@mrslowly9985 Месяц назад
It's not a demand issue, it's a supply issue. The supply must meet the demand for the grid to work and using only solar and wind will never- even under the best conditions for them - produce enough energy to meet demand. For this reason 'net zero' policies won't work, but if you really want clean air- go nuclear.

The other point about oil extraction is when the amount of energy needed to extract it is greater than the yield itself, which is why many remote oil fields remain untouched. Using 5 barrels of oil to extract 4 barrels worth is not viable.
@mrslowly9985
@mrslowly9985 Месяц назад
So you put a barrel of oil on the ground and magically it turns into an extraction facility?! Or the energy cost to make the materials is making the extraction less profitable. We are paying more per kWh with renewables than we ever did with just coal,gas or nuclear- even the power companies are stating without government support they wouldn't invest in renewable energy.
