@@MaximGhost OMG dude, Atlas does it too, this whole video's premise is wrong and the creator should feel foolish
@MaximGhost
@MaximGhost 8 месяцев назад
@@HyphenVM Then Boston Dynamics has been playing catch up. Boston Dynamics, first and foremost, was never an AI company. For that matter, neither was Tesla. However, Elon Musk did co-found OpenAI and was its initial significant investor. Musk even placed OpenAI's cheif scientist, Ilya Sutskever, at OpenAI back in 2015. Even recently, Tesla's former Director of AI, Andrej Karpathy, is now working at OpenAI, specializing in deep learning and computer vision. So, Tesla, through Musk's own egghead network, has a direct pipeline to the leading AI scientists on the planet, bar none. Frankly, what Musk is doing now with his Tesla bot is what Google should have done at Boston Dynamics after Google initially purchased it in December 2013. Apparantly Google's leaders didn't have the perseverence to force Boston Dynamic's hardware eggheads to work with Google's AI software eggheads ... so Google simply sold Boston Dynamics to SoftBank in April 2019. Softbank in turn sold BD to Hyundai, it's current parent. More importantly, do you know Hyundai as being an AI expert let alone a software expert? Right, neither do I. As industrial robotistist Scott Walker, PhD, has said multiple times on other channels, anyone can build robots these days but the "secret sauce" that has been lacking all this time has been self-learning software to make bipedal co-robots an every day sight on the factory floor. He also added that Tesla's other advantage with their own co-robots is that they are the only manufacturing company that are able to develop and test their own AI-enabled bipedal co-robots on their own factory floors instead of going through customer's who may or may not see the need yet for bipedals. Let's face it. Boston Dynamics had 10+ years to make Atlas prolific on their customers' factory floors. The fact that the world isn't looking to Boston Dynamics to make any more ground-breaking products of PRACTICAL use is proof that they make interesting stuff, but not useful stuff. If you REALLY want me to change my mind about that, then show me videos of Atlas working on a factory line instead of videos of it doing cute dances or parkour. That stuff doesn't generate revenue. If it did, then Google or SoftBank would still own Boston Dynamics as a BUSINESS interest, dude.
@UnidudeNine
@UnidudeNine 7 месяцев назад
@@HyphenVM You are speaking the truth! Boston dynamics can easily add an AI layer into their system. They can even use their existing code to train an AI layer how to walk and move in the same way. It's similar to how tesla cars are trained using human driving behavior. Or how AI image generation is trained using human art styles. Boston dynamics can benefit greatly from their already well working system.
@BongoWongoOG
@BongoWongoOG 7 месяцев назад
@@UnidudeNine Which realistically would be a massive waste of their time as Atlas isn't made for mass production. Its a show piece, a good show piece, but thats what it's built for. BD (MD or CEO, I can't recall which) have stated that they don't have the budget for a billion dollar super-computer or mass manufacturing facility to do the things Tesla is doing. Thats why they developed and market Spot. Even then they're 70-100k each, with the arm that looks like a neck. They're either remote controlled or pre-programmed.

Apparently the author of this video is merely offering an uninformed opinion. The Boston Dynamics Atlas robot has a massive library written by Engineers of movements. Atlas then uses AI to evaluate its environment and task at hand, then from the library, it chooses the correct scenario and then adjusts and adapts that scenario to fit the specific task at hand. The concept that the Tesla bot uses does indeed show more potential for greater growth. However the current software algorithms are still in their infancy. Hence the current difference in performance between the two robots. Each company would truly benefit by incorporating both software algorithms to form a hybrid heuristic algorithm. Unquestionably it would then become an industry standard!

Multiple sources online say that Atlas can and does in fact move autonomously? I mean, obviously the parkour isn't autonomous, but I think it can at least walk and maybe jump autonomously.
@iyafath
@iyafath 10 месяцев назад
Atlas is semi-automatic. Basically the engineer would work out the kinks for each behavior like jumping and rolling, but only for one specific model case. To account for variations in the actual run, the controller software adapts the numbers on the fly based on stuff like Atlas's current speed, footing, surrounding obstacles, platform height differences, etc. So all the driver needs to do to get Atlas to do parkour is guide it through the track and Atlas works out the details on its own. (Scott Kuindersma, Atlas' control team lead, explained the technical stuff in great detail on a Robotics Today seminar in 2020, available on YT.) I think this approach is much better in achieving the level of reflex and dexterity required to do accurate back-to-back stunts compared to the AI approach, since the adjustments are much faster. I also believe there is an article about the dance video featuring one of their engineers stating that they streamlined the preprogramming process so they didn't have to manually compute too much stuff, which dramatically sped up the video production.

I don't like these kinds of videos but the primary message that Optimus is based on AI and Atlas isn't is pretty much correct. Whoever knows robotics and programming knows very well the monumental difference in the frameworks. Anyone who compared the atlas and Optimus from the start just showed everyone how little they know. The surface level capabilities of the robots are almost irrelevant in fact, in this case. The difference is military robots made by BD will function more like piloted or semi autonomous drones. After he worked the bugs out and got the model working correctly then he built a Full Scale craft and flew it. Boston Dynamics is working out the Mechanics of movement. The teslabot is programmed to learn how to function. This seems dangerous, as if it learns the wrong skillset, it can and sounds like it will use this knowledge that was instilled into it, for bad. Despite atlas and teslabot being designed for different reasons, teslabot is still in its early production and highly doubt they aren't looking to innovate further. If they continue with their design of being programmed to learn new skills, and then use this skillset based off its programming and learning functions, I feel like it could be compared to Boston dynamics "military killing machine". So the Tesla robot, which is something any engineering undergraduate could cook up during a night of getting wasted, is better because it uses 'A.I.'...A.I. being software, a term that has lost its meaning because it's become a buzzword thrown at anything in the same way 'plant-based' has and in the case of Tesla, A.I. powered by an off the shelf Nvidia processor. Or put it another way. Do you want a robot that slowly learns how to slowly shuffle around and cook your dinner or you want one programmed to do it perfectly, every time, in five minutes. Or better still, one with 'A.I.' that slowly learns how to do it, then does it with absolute precision, every time, in five minutes because it finely tuned, stabilised mechanics. Bearing in mind the robot comes from a musk company, it's very likely that it will kill you anyway.

But I do agree that while Atlas is amazing, a robot available for the general public doesn't need to do somersaults. It just needs to be able to do manual tasks around humans without endangering anyone when it slips or falls over. I assume the weight alone could be dangerous for a human when hit by a falling robot. Also, robotics can be better, especially if they get the drive mechanism done well. Basically you can have a flexible drive shaft for any motor function, at any part of the body, while using only one drive and a magnetic coupling for each motion. It means less control mechanisms, and a more robust main drive, or a less weighty one. The maximum power for any single operation can equate the entire output of the drive, instead of matching only the maximum output of a very tiny local drive. (or myo). This can then make the robot very strong, limited by it's structure, while still keeping the output for multipe operations available at the same time, sharing the same drive power. Basically a 1000watt main drive, can be applied to a single function, when lifting weight, or that same power can be shared during walking/moving operations with several joints receiving a few hundred watts through the flexible drive shaft. The drive would be less prone to wear and tear, to much less a degree than individual drives (or myo's). I hope Elon gets this right, since his robots may very well be the first ones on Mars, doing pre-colonization work there, with orders handed out and performed next to near human intervention-less. Building stuff like a landing spot, early habitat drilling in a mountain for initial safety of deployment, etc. And yes, magnetic coupling, since mechanical coupling leads to wear and tear. For any robotic deployment on Mars, the more moving parts, the greater the chance for wear and tear.

@@tedmoss Well, no. Just using a centralized drive unit, doesn't mean that it can fail all at once. It may be reduced in output, but won'completely fail, unless completely destroyed, which is ultimately always possible. Many small engines can each fail, but none of the functioning ones will allow operation of the failing engine. A centralized engine system can be damaged and yet remain operational, because it's better shielded on a per weight basis, while the output is greater than each separate engine. Let's consider a single squeeze pulp from an orange. One engine would have to exert a power of 1 to squeeze for the pulp. For each joint you'd have similar engines all powered 1, like 20. For the centralized version, you'd have one engine power 10, which could operate each joint at power 10, while having twice the shielding. Same weight, better shielding, like 10 times much. Or, you can have an engine like power 5, with 15 times the shielding, still outperforming each single engine power 1.

So basically what you are saying is a shaky robot that is AI powered is superior to a robot that can do back flips?? Like BD can write code that allows Atlas to run via AI, they actually could be working on that as you presented this video. I feel you are a Muskite!

No, it looked like it because it was like 2 years into making while Atlas is like 20 years. But now... Atlast is heavily preprogramed robot, we had those decades ago. Tesla Bot is actually autonomous one.

@Zripas
@Zripas 7 месяцев назад
At the moment AI is really basic and would not require any specific rules to not hurt humans, it can have basic rule to not cause damage to surroundings and that's that. We are still ways to go before we get to actual AI which would need any of those rules.
